Clive Churchill Medal
With a number of predictions of the Clive Churchill Medalist doing the rounds, I thought it would be interesting to look at the history of the award by position and see if this determines the thinking around who will receive it in 2019. First awarded in 1986, the following positions have received the award (NRL era mentioned in brackets):
Spine
Fullback = 5 (4)
Five-eighth = 3 (2)
Halfback = 10 (6)
Hooker = 3 (2)
Total = 21 (14 in NRL era)
Forwards
Prop = 2 (2)
Second Row = 4 (3)
Lock = 6 (2)
Total = 12 (7)
Backs
Wing = 0
Centre = 0
Total = 0
So spine players have won two thirds of NRL-era CCMs, with forwards picking up the remaining awards. No winger or centre has ever won it. Also interesting to note that there have been three occasions where it has been awarded to a player on the losing team.
From an Easts perspective (the worst kind of perspective), the obvious favourite for Sunday is James Tedesco, and the fairy-tale narrative would see Cooper Cronk. I'm more interested in which Raider will get it, though. I would love to see our skipper receive it, but he would be working against history to be the first outside back to win it. The way Papalii is playing makes it hard to argue against him; I reckon he will be the third prop to take out the award.

Hard to go past Papa or Hodgo, the way they are going in this finals series. Bateman or Wighton are contenders as well.
I would love to see it go to Hodgo. He was really the beginning of this clubs transformation and deserves all of the accolades he can get.

I'm still trying to replicate my windfall of 2003 when I backed Luke Priddis at $34.00

I have Hodgo @ $23.
Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I have Sezer at $35, Whitehead at $67 and Hodgson at $15. But only a few bucks a piece.kona_dream wrote:I have Hodgo @ $23.

As I’ve been saying all along, halfbacks traditionally win this thing, so it’s Aidan Sezer’s to lose.

If we win this game it'll be Wighton IMO. His long kicking game, chase, defence and running will be so important for us.
Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I think when we win this thing, it'll be on the back of another iconic Josh Papalii performance or something special from one of the Englishmen... Whitehead is my smokey.

Re: Clive Churchill Medal
Whitehead has zero chance unfortunately. He had a couple of outstanding games this year that were recognised in the GH POTY voting but didn't even register a blip in post game ratings from the wider NRL community. Quite simply some of his best work is not the sexy stuff that gets attention. Admittedly he did get 3 Dally M points in Rnd 4 against the Cowboys where Anasta was judge.PigRickman wrote: ↑October 3, 2019, 1:07 pm I think when we win this thing, it'll be on the back of another iconic Josh Papalii performance or something special from one of the Englishmen... Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I think there is a real chance this is a super tight game, where the play makers impact is some what restricted... I think it'll be a forward if we win a tight game, and Smelliot has snagged a try, or set one one up, and then just worked his **** **** off... he'll be in the conversation with Papalii and Bateman
He definitely has a higher chance than zero.

Does anyone know who the judges are ?
Might help to make an educated guess on the winner based on the competency level of the judges

You generally have to play well to win the CC medal, mate.The Rickman wrote: ↑October 3, 2019, 12:56 pm As I’ve been saying all along, halfbacks traditionally win this thing, so it’s Aidan Sezer’s to lose.
Re: Clive Churchill Medal
Get me Blocker Roach on the judging panel and I’ll lock in Papalli or JWH.
Get Bozo Fulton and we can lock in Jamie Buhrer.

I tend to disagree on this. The tough stuff gets noticed in these sorts of games imo.Northern Raider wrote: ↑October 3, 2019, 1:33 pmWhitehead has zero chance unfortunately. Lookng at the list of winners its not reflected there. Glen Stewart in 2011 maybe. Otherwise if not a spine player its mostly high the profile forwards.julian87 wrote: ↑October 3, 2019, 3:10 pmI tend to disagree on this. Re: Clive Churchill Medal
The likes of Taumalolo, Burgess and Clyde won it on the back of some freakish numbers. You typically have to run in excess of 200m and make 30-40 tackles to win this thing as a forward. The stuff Whitehead does for us is often off the ball. I just don't think it will get the attention required to win the CCM. Glad to be proven wrong.
If any of our forwards win it, it'll obviously be Papalii or maybe Bateman if he makes a couple of clean breaks. Otherwise it's Hodgo or Wighton.
Tedesco and JWH must be red hot favourites to win this thing for the Roosters, I'm not sure Keary is fit enough. Cordner could do it too.

Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I would pick Wighton.
I can see him pinning a couple of roosters in goal for repeat sets, being the first tackler after every kick, shutting down tedesco ball and all, running hard all game and setting up a couple of tries.

Re: Clive Churchill Medal
For the Chooks the obvious is Teddy and Cronk. As a smokey, I can see Latrell breaking that centres duck, if he decides he wants too.
For us I think Hodgo is the obvious pick. I'd have Jack over Sezer too, as he is more likely to bring points scoring plays.
However, a Bateman, Papalii or BJ, another centre who is capable of getting a CC if he chooses, could do something ridiculas and take it.

I'm fairly sure the judges of the award are the selectors of the Australian side.robtheraider wrote: ↑October 3, 2019, 2:57 pm Does anyone know who the judges are ?

When we win this GF on Sunday night no ones going to care about the CC anyway..
I would be running nude in the streets and miss it for sure.

On the Monday bunker earlier they were saying that JWH was told post match he'd won the CC medal.
Another controversial moment.
Can the NRL get anything right ?

Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I guess the judges changed their minds then... I thought the NRL made it quite clear that it was allowed, or did they change their minds on that yet again!?
Re: Clive Churchill Medal
I'm pretty flat, a bit depressed, empty. Tired, very tired, exhausted, drained. Proud of the team's effort.
Re: Clive Churchill Medal
Apparently, they told him he was the winner (maybe level with another player), but Darren Lockyer's votes hadn't been counted yet!

It is almost laughable how incompetent the NRL is.

The best part of that debacle is that the two Raiders who were voting had JWH winning and it was Lockyer who swung it in favour of Jack.greeneyed wrote: ↑October 7, 2019, 3:09 pmApparently, they told him he was the winner (maybe level with another player), but Darren Lockyer's votes hadn't been counted yet!
