Should I be selfish?

Post by chris83 »

So my son in the last week has decided he loves the raiders, he is seven, im wathcing the replay of last nights game and he has watched about 3 minutes of it, he has never shown any interest in footy until all his mates got interested he says how he wants to go to the gf if i go but if he goes my 5 yr old daughter will want to go and it gets a bit pricey,
My question is....should i be selfish and go by myself, ive supported the raiders my whole life, i watch every weekend and my week depends on the raiders and if they win or lose, I cried in the middle of a pub last night after the game, or should i just stay at home and watch it there, knowing full well, my kids will probably watch 10 minutes of it and then want to watch a movie.
Please help
I've got legs, and i know how to use them

Personally, I don't think a 7 year old is particularly entitled to tag along to something like a Grand Final just because they express a vague interest in it.

Test his resolve. If the interest continues next season then tell him you'll consider taking him to the next one.

I think you should watch the game with him. If you don't he could easily end up a fumbleball supporter or worse still Broncos.

He's not going to remember the experience and we may never make it to another grand final.

My point exactly. Or by the time we make it again he can afford to pay for his own ticket!

I struggled taking a 7 year old to a regular season game when they aren't really interested in what's happening on the field. It's OK if you're paying a few bucks, not so great when it costs over $50 and they just annoy you the whole time! Nobody needs that.

Go watch it live by yourself and enjoy yourself. Then come home put on a replay and enjoy watching us win again with your kids Monday morning and tell them it’s live.

You’re welcome.

I'm taking my 8yo daughter if I can get tickets from a friend. She's only shown interest in the past month or so (mainly just to go to a stadium and watch a game). My 5yo daughter won't be coming.

A 7yo will remember it for sure.

Family first. You could have cemented his fandom for life. Now he'll think it's your thing.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Why is a 7 year old entitled to have his first live game of football be an NRL Grand Final (costing a couple of hundred dollars a ticket)?

I love my parents and they always put me first. Didn't mean I was always entitled to do everything they did while I was growing up. Parents are entitled to have their own life every now and again.

Maybe the NRL should consider this and actually have a policy in place to charge young kids $5 to see a regular game so parents would be more keen to take them on a regular basis.

For the record, I've taken my 11 year old daughter to see a bunch of things here, there and everywhere. She likes coming to the footy with me, but she won't be going to the Grand Final with me.

She'll be OK. She knows I still love her and she still follows the Raiders. She's a pretty well adjusted child.

Enjoy the Grand Final Chris, and enjoy watching the replay with your son and taking him to a game next season.

I too will enjoy my first live Grand Final as a 44 year old passionate Raiders fan, safe in the knowledge that my dad never took me to one when I was 7 years old...yet I know he still loves me.

I'd be taking the 7yr old along.

He can drive home later after you've smashed all those mid strength plastic cups.

You need to go to the grand final. This might not happen again for another 25 years.

My 6 year old has expressed a little bit of interest but I'm just too poor to bring him along, he's cool with it.

Tough position.
With regards to my kids, it's just unbelievable timing that I'll be in Thailand for the GF.... what makes me a little sad is that I won't get to share the experience with my wife and kids! I genuinely wanted to have this as a family moment.

However, if I were to be in Oz, I'd probably be coughing up the money to fly to Sydney on my own. No way I'd risk taking my kids.

Look at this guy and his charity. In my day it was just an empty bucket and if we wanted to hydrate we had to be prepared to Bear Grylls it, and that's the way we liked it!

Actually would taking Todd Carney to the Grand Final involve more parental difficulty than taking your 7 year old?

Take them, imagine 40 years in the future... you're on your death bed, Raiders lasts GF appearance and win was in 2019 and your kids are holding your hands as you slip into death both wearing their Raiders gear not because they know you love the Raiders but because they love the Raiders.

Nailed it Soss. Driving out of Canberra in Sunday I apologised to my wife. She asked what for, I said - the next week.

I’m so amped for this, I’m watching everything I can listening to every podcast, just trying to soak in everything I can.

It’s been 25 years. Who knows how long it will be until our next opportunity.

I usually hide in the garage and watch games because I know I get a little emotional. My son came in during the Melbourne game to make sure I was ok! I’ve told him the GF will be too loud and scary for him, but I would watch the game with him on Monday if we won. He gets it.
