Canberra Raiders sign Australian Schoolboys forward JJ Clarkson

THE Canberra Raiders have secured the services of Australian Schoolboys prop JJ Clarkson on a three-year deal. He was one of the dominant players at the recent National Schools Championships and has made the switch to Canberra after two seasons under contract with the Broncos. The 17-year-old had offers from three NRL clubs, including Brisbane.

“They (Canberra) are really good at developing their young talent and have a good reputation in this area,” his mum, Sharon Clarkson, said.

That’s great to hear. Has come through the Wynnum Manly Seagulls Academy and Wavell State High School.

Have we got something against recruiting players with Christian names? Weren’t we in the race for CJ Mundine yesterday?

I hope JJ is OK!

The obsession with signing players who's name begins with J continues!

FYI JJ’s name is Jayden.

Very dedicated young man, travelled a fair distance to school each day for a number of years and was never one to miss training.
Is a hard worker and has been in the QLD systems since 15’s.

From all accounts Wavell really missed him in their QLD semi final loss to Kirwan. JJ’s signing now takes the number of Wavell students to 5. Turning into a bit of a hunting ground for us.

Well said. Hopefully another that keeps on improving and is allowed time to grow into his body.

The SG Ball side will be one to watch next year if they all come down.

Good news. I think the Academy is having an influence in signing these young talents.
I'd like us to try and recruit some young play-makers too, if possible.

Agree on this! Unfortunately you have to get rid of old ones to get new ones! Our current 20’s playmakers did not even get an opportunity to play NSW cup. Certainly not on a performance basis either more on the lack of ownership and performance of Mounties. The academy definitely is a good long term draw card but a decent pathway also needs to exist for these young fellas to at least get the chance to be tested at cup level.

The long and short of it is an extreme minority of play makers are ready in that 18-21 age group. Even less would be solid first graders. They'll get plenty of time to be tested in the next couple of years.

O'Hagan was a 20s playmaker just last year. He looked great in NYC. The required step up has been obvious in his performances.

That's a good point.
I will say though, Melbourne seem to have a knack for finding young play makers earlier than most clubs. Having said that, it seems that even they don't always get the 'pathway side of things' correct, given they had to let Drinkwater go and are presumably about to let Croft go too.

Just for clarification are you saying Ohagan is up to it or isnt? From what i have seen he has had more than enough opportunity in NSW cup but unfortunately its someone else’s turn as he is well below par. If the club keep him it’s definitely not performance based!

O'Hagan is not up to it at this stage!

Haha thanks for clarifying! My opinion is he never will be either! Mind you the way things are going with Williams x 2, Sezer, Hingano and Wighton all going for 2 spots Mounties getting the left overs should be a good thing from a betting man perspective!

:) Yeah I can't see him making the step up either. Our 2020 reserve halves make up is going to be real interesting. Could end up with anything. It'd be absurd if it somehow ends up being 6. S Williams and 7. Sezer lining up for Mounties.
I can't imagine that ever happening.
