A lot of news about Val Holmes getting hardly any time on the field in his latest game. Punt return and kick return, both of which were fairly bog standard efforts. Nothing wrong with them, nothing special either. As expected he didn't see any time in the back field as he's too far down the depth chart. Jets are fairly deep at RB so he's not about to leapfrog the guys ahead of him. 3rd preseason game is the main hit out for the starters and backups. Week 4 is when the guys on the bubble get most game time.

I'll be surprised if he makes the roster and I'll be equally surprised if he's not signed to the practice squad. He's effectively an extra player as the International Pathways players don't count against practice squad limits. They've come this far with him and he's not taking anybody else's spot. May as well take the freebie on offer.

That is also an excellent outcome for Val Holmes. With a full season on the practice squad he gets plenty of opportunity to learn and improve. Gives him every opportunity to sneak up the depth chart and make the final roster next year. Time is on his side here.

He hasnt stood out, hasnt been a flop either, and ill bet he is further along than they though he would be. They will definitely carry him as an extra practice squad member. My Q is, should he play a game this yr, however unlikely, can he return to that extra practice squad member?

My understanding is you can sign a player from the practice squad to replace somebody on IR. Effectively means they are there for the remainder of the season.

He's not going to make the team
Lev Bell is the feature back, Billy Powell is the back up, and they are using Ty Montgomery in really interesting ways as an RB.

He's **** out of luck. They'll put him on the practise squad because it costs them nothing and it's part of the deal. And it'll be up to Val Holmes to decide if he really wants this and spends the year on PS to have a crack at the active roster next year but it's $129k for the full season for a PS spot and this season will take him all the way up to Christmas

Or he can walk away, head held high that he had a crack and was found a little wanting, he's free and clear of the Sharks contractual control and sign a 700-800k a year + deal with the cowboys.

Have a guess where i think this is going to end?

He can, he'd have to clear waivers before being able to be demoted back to the PS.

Just seen Vals new set of 'highlights', and he can run to save his life, but 3rd down scat back looks his go.
Three 1st downs, incl. one on 3rd and 2, where he lined up on the outside and ran 30yds down field and caught it over his shoulder.

Not great, but Id say his progress in such a short time is amazing.

Week 4 preseason is basically the reserves playing off for the final roster spots. WHile you're up against 2nd division defenses you're also running behind a 2nd division o-line with a 3rd string QB. It's all relative really.

Holmes did nothing in his run plays. 5 carries for net 0 yards. The extremes were +2yd and -2yd runs. He ran the play he was meant to and nothing was there for him. Could argue he lack the necessary instincts and play reading of the top RBs, which is to be expected. Really nothing to see here as a runner.

On receiving Holmes lookes pretty good. Runs his routes well and shows good hands. Seems to do a decent job of getting open. 55yds on 5 catches is a nice haul for a back. In a game where neither side could move the ball he was no1 receiver on the field. Based on what he's shown to date his future might be as a slot receiver or situational back for 3rd downs. Wouldn't mind seeing how he did on a screen play. May never know.

Yep, right now he is a trick shot guy, with a little upside as a receiver.
The thing that I think is weird, he hasn't done as much returning as I thought he would.

I thought he looked quite good as a WR also, i dont know if he could learn the intricacies of the position to go out there and make plays as an out and out WR, but he's caught the ball extremely well, made some tough catches, gotten some hard YAC and the other day against the eagles, they split him out wide as and he caught a nice 27 yard bomb over a LB who had gone out to cover him in man Edwards, who might make the eagles rooster
So there is potential there for sure'

As a runner, honestly. He's trash. And that's the problem. Probably not refined enough, nor will be give himself the time to become refined enough as a WR, and cant run for ****... which means he's got no place on an NFL team. Because if you saw him in the game, you arent even going to pretend to honour the run.

I think if he gave himself 18-24 months of sustained training and refinement, he could probably make the roster as a #4-5 WR.

Massive trade between Houston and Dolphins. Texans get Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills, Phone get 2 X 1st and 1 X 2nd draft picks.

Phins putting a ton of faith in the 2020 draft. Stills trade gives them cap space but Tunsil was a bargain cap figure for a top level LT. Won't know who got the best deal there for a couple of years yet.

What the texans have done is absolutely insane

Firstly they got pennies on the dollar for Clowney... two back up LB's, end of roster guys, and a 3rd for Clowney... if you hang on to him and let him walk in 12 months time you'll get a 3rd comp pick anyways, so it's just straight up two bad LB's for Clowney

The Tunsil trade is at least for a good player, Tunsil is an excellent young left tackle. But that's a TON to pay... and lets put it in perspective, the Eagles jumped them in the draft to take Andre Dillard, they instead took Austin Howard and they are already so out on him that they made this move... so by letting the eagles jump them for Dillard, it's basically cost them 3 firsts and a second to get a LT. And now they're going to have to pay him, a lot... because they surrendered that much for him, anything less than a total record setting deal will not be enough

1st round picks would generally translate to starters at a minimum. 2nd round picks not far off. Plus you have the upside of a potential all-pro calibre player. That could possibly convert to 3 regular starters traded for Tunsil. On face value it's too high a price to pay for a player like him. They've given away their future in an attempt to solidify their line right now. (I won't count Stills in the compensation as Phins were placed to cut him anyway.)

With Clowney the franchise tag had become a burden in trading him. Because he didn't sign it they lost their leverage. Dolphins wanted Clowney but wouldn't offer Tunsil for him without a couple of decent picks thrown in. Even after the Clowney trade they still had visions of landing Tunsil and ended up over paying. Can't help but think they've panicked a bit and looking back on it they effectively gave.up Clowney, 2x 1st and 1x 2nd for Tunsil.

Over to the Dolphins and they've got a massive stockpile of picks in next two drafts with a total of 4x 1sts, 4x 2nds and 3x 3rds. Plus they'll have a ton of cap space for free agents next year. Flores has a 5 year contract and he's going to have every chance of a top line roster at the back end of it. Now we just have to see if he's any good as a coach.

Apparently it’ll be a 6 year, 90mil deal
What that actually means in real gtd money and structure remains to be seen

Twitter reports say it’s really just the money flow and figuring out the 30% rule that’s holding things up
I’ll be stunned if he doesn’t play week 1

Also drafted my money superflex league, 14 teams so it’s rough Drafting
Rosters:
Qb
rb x2
Wr x2
Flex x 2
S/flex x 1
Def x1

5x bench spots

Drafted the following team:
Jimmy G, Dalton, Eli and Rosen @ QB
Zeke, Carson, Shady and Ballage @ RB
Allen, Woods, Hilton, Stills @ WR
OJ Howard and Jack Doyle @ TE
Denver Broncos DST

Not super thrilled about my QBs but I’m pretty solid everywhere else for a 14 team draft
I picked in spot 1.05

Also drafted my money superflex league, 14 teams so it’s rough Drafting
Rosters:
Qb
rb x2
Wr x2
Flex x 2
S/flex x 1
Def x1

5x bench spots

Drafted the following team:
Jimmy G, Dalton, Eli and Rosen @ QB
Zeke, Carson, Shady and Ballage @ RB
Allen, Woods, Hilton, Stills @ WR
OJ Howard and Jack Doyle @ TE
Denver Broncos DST

Not super thrilled about my QBs but I’m pretty solid everywhere else for a 14 team draft
I picked in spot 1.05
I like it TBH.
4 QBs who should start all yr.
A little injury prone at WR.
Stacked at RB.
TE is a bit weak. Doyle can't be the same without Luck, surely.
Good D.

Chris Herndon got dropped, so im hoping to get him on waivers in place of Doyle, i think Herndon is going to be massive this year, and i think OJ Howard will to, so i feel good about TE
The List - K.Love, Keno, Zippy's tennis angels, LA Lakers, Noah, Boozer, Lucy's horse tips, Colts, Lucy, Kevin Proctor, Dr Zaius, TR, Tinfoil hatted Gangers and Woody, anyone in Raiders HQ who can point to QBN on a map....

OJ is good, but Doyle had a purple yr last yr IMO. Herndon could be a sneaky pickup

6 year deal for a RB. :woot:
Many struggle to have a career that long. With a big chunk guaranteed he'll be carrying a big cap number through the whole deal too.
