Oldfield gets it stolen on first tackle. We survive with a forward pass when they were about to stroll in to score.

Full set on in our attacking 20 and we fail to fire a shot. We get the scrum from the rebound off the kick.

Murchie makes a break passes to Smith Shields who goes to kick and misses the ball. Sums it all up today.

But we are close enough.

Also didn’t mention Bateman went off early and hasn’t come back.

North Sydney Bears dent finals campaign for Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties

The North Sydney Bears have beaten Mounties in the final round of the regular season with a 19-6 victory at Aubrey Keech Reserve on Saturday. A win for Mounties would have seen them make the top four - winning a valuable second bite at the cherry - but instead are set for a sixth placed finish, and a meeting with the Newtown Jets in Week 1 of the finals. That also means they're facing sudden death every week in the finals.

Preview

Last week: The Mounties had an opportunity to finish the regular season in the top four, but they did not take it - losing to the North Sydney Bears at Aubrey Keech Reserve, 19-6. Mounties scored a solitary try in the the ninth minute, and, after Sam Williams' conversion, they did not score again in the match.

Half Sam Williams played just 35 minutes in the first half, saved as 18th man for the Raiders against the Sharks. The priority obviously has to be first grade. It is no doubt tough for Mounties to adjust to that sort of disruption to their line up. Nevertheless, it was a disappointing performance with so much on the line. Mounties completed at just 65 per cent (Bears 71 per cent), making 14 errors and conceding seven penalties - and had just 45 per cent of the ball. And while Mounties had the more effective tackle rate, they missed 38 tackles and produced 10 ineffective tackles.

JJ Collins (156), Reubenn Rennie (145), and Michael Oldfield (123) topped the metres gained for Mounties, with Collins the only forward to break the 100 metres gained mark. Tom Starling (46), Jack Murchie (37), Emre Guler (33) and Dan Keir (32) topped the tackle count for the Mt Pritchard outfit.

This week: Had Mounties beaten the Bears, they would have finished third, and faced the Rabbitohs in Week 1 of the finals. Instead, they finished sixth, and now meet the seventh placed Newtown Jets in an elimination final at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

It is going to be no easy task for Mounties to beat the Jets. Both teams have an idential season record, finishing on 25 competition points. Mounties have the better attacking and defensive record, but not by that much. Mounties finished the season with the second best attack, while the Jets finished equal seventh. Mounties rank a lowly ninth for least points conceded, the Jets 11th.

In their last outing, the Jets beat the Knights, 34-22, at Henson Park - after going to the break well in control, leading 28-6 and having scored five tries. The Knights came back in the final quarter of the game, but a try to former Raider, Scott Sorensen, sealed it for the Jets in the 75th minute. TheJets have lost just once in their past five games, with the Blacktown Sea Eagles springing a 26-24 upset in Round 20. Newtown has also had recent wins over the Western Suburbs Magpies (42-14), Panthers (28-18) and the Bulldogs (32-12).

Mounties won just once in the nine matches between Round 11 and Round 20, an 18-12 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies at Campbelltown Stadium. They headed into the clash with the Bears on a three game winning streak, with victories over the Sea Eagles (30-26), Knights (36-14) and the Bulldogs (26-24).

Season record: Mounties 11 and 10, 1 draw (6th, +69)
Jets 11 and 10, 1 draw (7th, 0)

Attack: Mounties 27 points, Jets 24 points scored per match

Defence: Mounties 23 points, Jets 24 points conceded per match

Form: Mounties: LWWWL
Jets: WLWWW

Recent meetings:
2019 Round 14 - Newtown Jets 34 defeated Mounties 20 at Aubrey Keech Reserve
2019 Round 2 - Mounties 32 defeated Newtown Jets 16 at Shark Park
2018 Round 15 - Mounties 22 defeated Newtown Jets 16 at Henson Park
2018 Round 10 - Newtown Jets 34 defeated Mounties 20 at Aubrey Keech Reserve

Head to head: Mounties 10, Newtown Jets 4

Mounties team changes: The announced team is identical to the team that ran out last week. However, Michael Oldfield, Sebastian Kris, Emre Guler and JJ Collins have all been named in the Canberra Raiders starting team to face the Warriors on Saturday - with Ricky Stuart resting a number of first grade players - so there will be major changes to the announced line up on game day.

Our tip: Mounties started the season strongly, and just shy of the half way point of their season (Round 11) led the competition. However, injury and suspension to Raiders players significantly impacted Mounties in the second half of their year. That said, Mounties have had a tendency to fade in the second half of their games, when they had the opportunity to win. Based on the season records, Mounties would probably be slightly favoured in this match. It is obviously a must win... for the loser it is the end of the season. However, given the prospective disruption to the Mounties line up, it is difficult to see the men in black and yellow getting a win in this one.

Pretty ordinary year for blooding our 20’s through or giving them an opportunity compared to last year. Interesting as look what popped out when they did from last years squad( Horsborough, Young etc. As soon as mounties went on the losing streak the development went out the window. Regardless i wish them well this week and will be there. Sooner the club have there own NSW cup side the better but cant see that happening for a while!

They are very good rugby league people at Mounties in my experience... but I think the time has come to restore a Canberra Raiders team to the NSW Cup.

I don't see a wave of players coming into the Raiders' squad from the Mounties district... as we did when the club was linked to Souths Logan Magpies. All the good players coming through are obviously going to be picked up by Sydney teams... Mounties play in the Eels' junior district. I'm not sure that sending our fringe players to western Sydney every week is the best thing for their development. I'm not sure that it is the best thing for developing a sense of "club" for the Canberra Raiders.

The Raiders are supplying the vast bulk of players each week in Mounties' squad of 17 for NSW Cup. There are players based in Canberra Raiders Cup who are at least the equal of the players supplied by Mounties who round out the squad or back up. They leading players amongst them could easily be contracted by the Raiders.

The Raiders Group can surely afford to run a NSW Cup team. Time has come to base our NSW Cup team here in Canberra.

I will continue to support the club and Mounties while ever they are in partnership, and I'll do my best to promote that... but I think we'd get a clearer pathway for players in the region if our NSW Cup team was based in Canberra and playing in green.

I guess my point is how do we know what he have got when they are not getting an opportunity to step up and be tested, in particular while being surrounded by higher quality players. Some people lift in that sense.

Given he's from a Raiders juniors background I'd say Marrapodi would well and truly know his place in the scheme of things. But it'd be a weird personal grapple seeing so many unavailabilities in your team for a knock out final because the first grade team did so well.

You'd think they'd be lambs to the slaughter without Oldfield, Kris, Collins, Guler, probably Williams and maybe even Starling.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Hopefully the Jersey Flegg ranks are not drawn on for Mounties... Flegg deserve a decent chance in the finals. It'd be a likely loss in both games in that case.

Someone is going to get decimated. Mounties probably think they can win the Ron Massey Cup having finished third and beating the top team last week.

At least both Flegg and RMC have double chances.

Backing up would be a big effort but getting from Campbelltown to Canberra in less than half an hour would be a feat.

They named the Mounties team before the Raiders rested 4.
