Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
Ricky Stuart interview:
Really pleased with how we've prepared. Ready for a big challenge, they're the benchmark, the Storm. We took the result of last week well, as it was a match we could have won. Not intimidated by the Roosters or the Storm. Lost our way a bit last week in the last 10 minutes. I say it respectfully, they're very good football teams. We lost our shape and structure in the final stages last week. But it's good education and we can still work on improvements.
Good time to face the Roosters, the Storm? We've got to make it the best time to face these teams. We've got a healthy squad, we're in a position where we're looking forward to the match. We're prepared and ready to go.
Joey Leilua. Nice to have him back, he and Jordan Rapana have a special combination. Brings back a specialist centre. Will be better for the run, will be even better in two or three weeks. He'll be nervous, but Joey would never tell you if he was. Will be good to have him make his first run, tackle, any nerves will then be gone. The injury could have been career ending. We were lucky to have his surgeon down in Sydney. He's now all right to go.
150 games for Jack Wighton. I've seen his game go to another level. Nice to be able to have Charnze to go back into No. 1, and he's a threat at No. 6. Given the left side, Jarrod and Bailey, now Nick, confidence in the defence inside.
Craig Bellamy. He's my mate, I find it a bit strange facing him. But I'll take two beers into the Storm sheds after the game whatever happens.

Ricky Stuart interview on ABC Canberra Grandstand this morning:
Games like this... it is why you train so hard, because you like a big stage. Will be a big stage tomorrow, facing a big team, this is the fun part of it.
Good feeling in the community, that's exciting, a lot of hard work to get to that position. Now is the time to stay focussed and not let the buzz and the hype interfere with what we're doing. We need to be resilient, a lot to be told about the top four and top eight yet.
We haven't achieved anything yet. We haven't achieved what we want. Now we must keep our mind focussed, have a good session, focus on the "now".
Captains' run is basically led by the players, I talk to the captains about what we want to achieve. The boys know how we want to start and finish the session. The template is similar each week, may vary a bit depending on the opposition.
It is a long season. Teams fall in and out of form. Consistency is a big thing, when you get into the grind of the season. Credit to the boys and the staff about keeping us consistent. We've been consistent all year.
Big crowd? It's fun, running out to 20,000 people. It gives you a buzz when you run out into that environment, you feel you don't want to let anyone down, your team mates. I tell the boys, "You don't have to be born in Canberra for you to feel you belong here." That crowd will let them know they belong here. We play for our fans, we want to win for them, but we must win for ourselves first.
One of my great memories playing at this stadium was Mal Meninga's final game. They had to let the kids onto both ends of the field inside the fence to fit them in. That was exciting. I often talk to the boys about the past, because I want them to have those sorts of experiences. It is that sort of memory which makes you love your club. It is that sort of game where you bond with your team mates. It was very special.
We're in the fight tomorrow, if we're good enough. But we mustn't get ahead of ourselves. We must focus on every day, on the "now".
Both teams play a similar brand of footy. Big and strong in the middle, fast outside backs, half back in good form. We must be good defensively tomorrow. They can score early in sets, they can score long range tries, they can score from kicks.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

People were misinterpreting sometimes, when they were not necessarily a direct quote.
Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
The best thing that I have consistently heard from Stuart and the players is that we haven’t achieved anything yet. I get the feeling this is not a team that will be satisfied with anything other than a premiership.
It’s a great mentality and everyone seems to have bought into it! It’s a very different mantra from the team than from previous seasons and it is showing on the field.

Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
To be fair, it’s the exact same message that was told in 2016 - no one gives us a chance, we haven’t achieved anything yet.
It nearly worked then, let’s hope it works this time.

Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
In 2016 it sounded like the coaches mantra but I think to some degree he players for a bit ahead of themselves, it feels like they are much more on board with things this time around.
Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
Ricky Stuart will again be on the program this morning after 11am, prerecorded interview from before the captains' run. He will discuss how the team is preparing and training at this stage of the season.
Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
Ricky Stuart interview:
The season doesn't go quickly, long and grinding. People don't see the work behind the scenes, what hours the assistance and high performance team put in. The work they put into getting the players there in good physical and mental shape is huge, they put in long hours. People don't see that.
Team selection time difficult? Not great on Tuesdays when you have to disappoint people, that's a difficult part of the job. It's a decision, it's an opinion, I ask the senior players and other coaches about those decisions. Just best to be honest with people. I just have to do the best thing I can, to pick the players I believe will do the best job for the club.
It's important to have your best players out there at this time of the year, but you don't want players out there if they're not 100 per cent. We don't want Joe Tapine out there at the moment, he'll tell me when he's right. The team prepares very well, important that they switch on and switch off. Important that there are times when the players are not just thinking about football.
Each week is different, due to the different scheduling of games. I gave the players Monday and Tuesday off, told some of the staff to stay away too. Next week a shorter turnaround so it'll be a bit different. You're tweaking your plan, tweaking your footy, but you don't want to change too much at this time of year. We need to get the players to the sideline the best physically and mentally that we can - and let them do what they do best, play footy.
I've got a good group of players, they know what they need in terms of preparation. I just want to make sure they keep up the enthusiasm and energy.
Some players come in to get a bit of extra rehab, do some extras on days off. But others like Elliott Whitehead are out at Gold Creek golfing. On my days off, I probably will do some work at home. You can't take a day off entirely, yesterday I went out for lunch with some coaches, so that's some down time.
Last two years, I believe we've had a team that is good enough, bit of bad luck. Now we're competing, you can see the players' body language, they're excited too. Competing at this time of year is why you play footy.
We've really been focussing on making sure the players understand their role in the team at present.
Will be a big game tomorrow, great atmosphere and great practice for a couple of weeks time.

More significantly, the loss of Austin, Boyd and Paulo have improved the club's culture. There is no doubt the focus on turning up each week and working hard for each other in defence has been the cornerstone of this season.

I much prefer the Jack Gibson approach... tell your team, everybody is lucky, you just have to put yourself in the position to take advantage of it.
"Need a bit of luck" is not the message you want to be giving your team, IMHO.

The squad's attitude was **** in 2017. That had nothing to do with bad luck.
Last year Hodgo's injury was unfortunate, but Wighton's suspension was entirely on him. That wasn't bad luck, nor was the piss poor attitude of some of our players.

We had a terrible attitude in 2017. Enough said.

Re: Ricky Stuart on ABC Canberra Grandstand
I don't think we were good enough over the past two seasons or the ladder position would been different. Defensively we simply didn't cut it. That wasn't down to luck. It was down to application and the skill set of some players who were moved on. Different Assistant Coach has made a difference in both how the Raiders play and in talent spotting. John Bateman was already an International so there were expectations about him, but CNK has been a revelation at the back. The Rickman wrote: ↑August 31, 2019, 11:55 amI’m not really happy about him blaming luck for two hideous seasons, but the rest of his interview was on pointSeiffert82 wrote:Nice for him to acknowledge that the team was 'good enough' the past two seasons.

Andrew McFadden interview on ABC Canberra Grandstand:
The nerves are a bit less jarred today, nice feeling that a top four spot is locked in, been a tough month against three top four teams and then the Sharks last week.
Doesn't make a lot of difference, finishing third or fourth? Ricky Stuart said that yesterday? Maybe not, but we want to play well today, that's for sure.
Playing away from home for the Warriors might help them, away from the scrutiny of their local media, they have nothing to lose and we have to be on guard. Their back three are first class, they start sets well and get momentum. Quality halves and forward pack. But our concern is how we play.
Six day turnaround? Lose a preparation day, usually have one training day focussed on attack, another on defence, and in a six day turnaround you have to squeeze that into one day. But we're trying to keep preparations as routine as we can. Time to switch off this year is important too. We've got an experienced coaching team, under Ricky's leadership, know when to go hard and when to ease off in training. Players have been focussed this week, bringing the young guys in has added a bit of an edge, they're very motivated and excited.
Full club will get together tomorrow morning to go through what is to come in the finals.

Players have been focussed this week, bringing the young guys in has added a bit of an edge, they're very motivated and excited.
Full club will get together tomorrow morning to go through what is to come in the finals.

Andrew McFadden's interview is about 10-15 minutes into the program.
Re: Andrew McFadden on ABC Canberra Grandstand
I got the feeling they had really deliberately tried to make this week relaxed.

Re: Andrew McFadden on ABC Canberra Grandstand
Agree. But come Sunday afternoon when the fixtures are confirmed, things will get very very real. And hopefully for a few weeks. It makes sense to drop the intensity of the mood a bit this week.
Re: Andrew McFadden on ABC Canberra Grandstand
The roosters, also going in without momentum.
Penrith had momentum and we beat them like a drum, so what good did "momentum" do for them?
I think all that stuff is massively overblown... these games will be decided on the day by who's better that day. Nothing that happened in the Warriors game should impact the Storm game.

Sharks went in with no momentum in 2016, beat us first week of the finals and won the comp. Agree it's a bit overrated - whoever comes good during the finals is all that matters. We'll have no expectations on us after the last couple of weeks of dross we have dished up, so it's all ahead of us.
