Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Wrap

The Goulburn Bulldogs and Queanbeyan Blues consolidated their position in the top four with victories in Round 15 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. It has set up a mouth watering clash between the two teams - running second and third - at Seiffert Oval next Saturday. As they are level on 22 competition points, it will likely determine which of the teams finish in the top two.

The Bulldogs spoiled the 100 year party for the Yass Magpies at Walker Park inflicting a 52 point defeat on the home team.

The Bulldogs are an absolute point scoring matchine at present - powered by the three Cornish brothers. Goulburn scored a total of 12 tries today, with each of the three Cornishes, Nick, Mitch and Tyler getting four pointers. Mitch scored a double, with Dillon Rota scoring a hat trick in the second half.

The Bulldogs led 28-0 at half time and continued on with the job in the second half. There wasn't much joy for the home team, but they at least crossed the line twice in the second half, with tries to centre Brendon Housden and, in the final five minutes, to lock Ben Davis.

The final score saw the Bulldogs run out 62-10 victors.

Despite the on field woes, the Magpies do have a lot to be proud of, as the oldest surviving club in the Canberra district. They marked their 100 years with a special dinner on Saturday night, and each of the grades wore jerseys from different periods in the club's history on Saturday.

At Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan derby was hard fought, but the Blues came home the stronger in the final stages. The Blues dominated the opening 25 minutes of the game, scoring three tries and going to a 14-0 lead over the Kangaroos.

Centre Jake Wheeler, who retained the captaincy, despite the return of Terry Campese from suspension, opened the scoring in the 8th minute, after half Jordan Williams put in a smart grubber across field. They followed up in the 14th minute when Terry Campese sent the ball wide, with winger George Williams going over in the corner. Ten minutes later, Williams put in a pin point bomb to the corner for left winger Francis Fainifo, who grounded ball centimetres from the sideline.

The Kangaroos fought back in the 30th minute, when the Blues were unable to defuse a bomb - and Reece Robinson made the Blues pay. And then with three minutes to the break, Roos second rower Nukurua Ngere crashed through the defensive line - enabling the home team to go to the break trailing by just four points.

A penalty goal early in the second half stretched the Blues' lead to six, but in the 60th minute, a stunning second try to Reece Robinson saw the Kangaroos draw level at 16-16. The Blues the found another gear in the final 20 minutes. Jake Wheeler scored his second try of the day in the 67th minute. And just three minutes later, prop Josh Hitchins made a huge, bullocking run to seal the result - a 28-16 victory for the cross town visitors.

The Bulldogs and Blues now have a jump on the Kangaroos to the tune of three competition points. However, even if the Woden Valley Rams win on Sunday, the Roos will still hold onto fourth place on the ladder.

At Kippax, the West Belconnen Warriors kept their faint final hopes alive with a big 48-10 win over the Gungahlin Bulls. And on Sunday, the Belconnen Sharks upset the Woden Valley Rams, 22-18, at Phillip. That will make it very difficult for the defending premiers to now make the finals.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Blues beat Roos to claim Queanbeyan bragging rights

Terry Campese's bloodied feet reminded him it was his first game in eight weeks and the Blues coach has come up with a novel way to stay on the park. Leave the captain's armband on Jake Wheeler.

"Win one more game and we should be definitely in the top four, it just depends on where," Campese said. "Next week's a massive game for us, Goulburn... that will determine if we'll get a second bite of the cherry."

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

Round 16 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a clash that may well determine the top two teams of 2019 - when the Goulburn Bulldogs travel to Seiffert Oval to meet the Queanbeyan Blues in the match of the round.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Yass Magpies

The ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the last placed Yass Magpies at Greenway. The Bushrangers are coming off the bye. They are on a four game winning streak and have lost just twice this season. The Bushies don't have the best attack (ranked fifth) or defence (ranked fourth) in the competition, but they sure know how to win.

The Magpies have won two matches all season and one in their past 11 games. Their last victory was an upset of the Queanbeyan Blues - and that was a great result for a club that is struggling this year. Last weekend, Yass celebrated their 100 years. They are the oldest surviving club in the Canberra district, so they have a lot to be proud of. But they suffered a 52 point defeat at the hands of the second placed Bulldogs last Saturday... and it is difficult to see them getting an upset in this one.

Season record: Bushrangers 10 and 2, 1 draw (1st, +72)
Magpies 2 and 12 (9th, -295)

Form: Bushrangers LWWWW
Magpies LWLLL

Attacking record: Bushrangers 27, Magpies 14 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 21, Magpies 35 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 8: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 28 defeated Yass Magpies 16 at Walker Park

2018 Rd 13: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 42 defeated Yass Magpies 4 at Greenway
2018 Rd 4: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 20 defeated Yass Magpies 14 at Walker Park

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be keen to get back on the winners list this week when they travel to Gungahlin for a meeting with the Bulls. They are clearly in fourth place, three competition points clear of the Warriors and Rams. But they can't afford a slip up against the eighth placed Bulls in this match.

The Kangaroos came off second best at Freebody Oval last weekend in the Queanbeyan derby, losing to the Blues 28-16. It was a hard fought match, and the scores were level, 16-16, as the match entered the final 20 minutes. However the Blues finished more strongly, with tries to Jake Wheeler and Josh Hitchins.

The Bulls suffered a big 48-10 loss to the West Belconnen Warriors last week - and have had just one win in their past eight fixtures. It is difficult to see them getting an upset in this clash, even at home.

Season record: Bulls 3 and 10, (8th, -266)
Kangaroos 7 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +81)

Form: Bulls LLLWL
Kangaroos WWWWL

Attacking record: Bulls 17, Kangaroos 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 38, Kangaroos 21 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2018 Rd 1: Queanbeyan Kangaroos 34 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 30 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Belconnen United Sharks V West Belconnen Warriors

The Belconnen United Sharks have been the cellar dwellers of the Canberra Raiders Cup for the past few seasons. But they are cellar dwellers no longer. After their 22-18 victory over the defending premiers, the Woden Valley Rams, at Phillip last weekend, the Sharks have now posted five wins this season. They're out of the running for the 2019 finals, but they are now in a good position to build further in 2020.

The fifth placed West Belconnen Warriors will still be hoping they can force their way into the top four. But they are three competition points away from the fourth placed Kangaroos. In the final three games of the regular season, they first face the Sharks - and then the Yass Magpies and Woden Valley Rams. They are all winnable matches - so the only thing they can do is keep winning and hope the results for other teams go their way.

Warriors half Bobby Roberts says that the tight rope his club is now walking reflects too many slow starts this season. Against the Kangaroos two weeks ago, they trailed 14-0 in a flash.

"Things like that really hurt us... just getting our starts right. If we'd won against the Roos, we'd be sitting prettier and things might look a little more hopeful," Roberts said.

"Now we're just relying on results."

He knows it will be a tough clash with the Sharks.

"They're just a really tough team. A lot of teams judge them off previous years. You just can't do that. Once they get a roll on they're pretty tough to beat," Roberts said.

The Sharks have the advantage of having former Raiders hooker Glen Buttriss back after he suffered a torn meniscus early in the season.

"I was only expected to be out for around eight weeks... and then it ended up being 12 weeks," Buttriss said.

"It's been really good to be back around the boys and get a couple of wins always helps."

Buttriss says the Warriors showed last week how desperate they will be in the countdown to the finals.

"I think the Warriors are going to be tough this weekend. They had a good win last weekend, so I'm pretty sure they'll be keen to back it up and try to make the finals."

The Warriors will be favourites on Saturday - but they were one of the Sharks' victims earlier this year, losing 26-12 in Round 7 at Kippax. If the Sharks can pull off a repeat, it will probably be pretty close to the end of the season for the Warriors. I expect the Warriors to be desperate and to get the win in this one.

If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Sharks 5 and 8 (7th, -91)
Warriors 6 and 7 (5th, +54)

Form: Sharks LLWLW
Warriors WLLLW

Attacking record: Sharks 21, Warriors 29 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 28, Warriors 24 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2018 Rd 17: West Belconnen Warriors 54 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 12 at Kippax
2018 Rd 8: West Belconnen Warriors 18 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 16 at O'Connor

Queanbeyan Blues V Goulburn Bulldogs

The third placed Queanbeyan Blues host the second placed Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval on Saturday in what is no doubt the match of the round. The result may well determine which team gets a "second bite at the cherry" in the finals - because they have finished in the top two.

Both teams are on 22 competition points - with points differential splitting them. The Bulldogs, however, are very clearly the best attacking and defensive team this season. They have averaged 40 points scored per match, while conceding just 17. The Blues rank second in attack, but average seven less points per match than the Bulldogs. They rank third in the league in defence.

The Bulldogs have four of the top 10 try scorers this season and three of the top five. No one has scored more tries than Bulldogs five eighth Mitch Cornish and winger Steven Cummins (14), while half back Nick Cornish ranks equal fourth (11). With the three Cornish brothers, Nick, Mitch and Tyler in key spine positions, and the experienced James Aubusson at hooker, the Bulldogs have really become a point scoring machine.

Goulburn is now on a four game winning streak - but both teams have won four of their past five. In their last outing, the Bulldogs produced a huge 62-10 win over the Yass Magpies - while the Blues defeated their cross town rivals, the Kangaroos, 28-16.

The Blues' player coach, Terry Campese made a return to the field last weekend - just in time for the run to the finals. He's spent some time off the field due to a combination of factors, including a suspension for dissent. But against the Roos it was like he'd never been away. He's in the veteran class now, but he orchestrates his side superbly with great kicking and passing. He's the sort of player who controls the tempo of the game, and he plays at his own pace.

Centre Jake Wheeler took over the captaincy while Campese was missing - and he did such a great job, Campese has passed the baton to him. Wheeler is a very talented player, and no slouch in the try scoring stakes himself, having scored 10 this season.

This is a mouth watering clash. I'll tip the visitors. Their attacking and defensive record is just too good to ignore. If you're in Canberra, make sure you get to Seiffert. Second versus third. The Cornishes versus Campo. It should be a beauty.

Season record: Blues 8 and 3, 2 draws (3rd, +150)
Bulldogs 10 and 4 (2nd, +321)

Form: Blues WWLWW
Bulldogs LWWWW

Attacking record: Blues 33, Bulldogs 40 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 21, Bulldogs 17 points conceded per match

Glen Buttriss returns from injury to a Sharks season turnaround

They revived their victory chant, while Glen Buttriss dusted off his boots.

"It's good to be back, the body is slowly starting to get used to playing footy again," he said. "We've had a few wins over the last couple of weeks, which was great to be a part of and always makes things enjoyable."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Blues have displaced the Goulburn Bulldogs as the No. 2 team on the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder - after winning the battle for second at Seiffert Oval this afternoon, 34-26.

Image

Image

The unfortunately small crowd had barely found their seats before the Bulldogs put winger Steven Cummins over in the corner - the result of a sweeping back line move. They followed up quickly, with half Nick Cornish making a break up the middle and throwing a perfect long pass to winger Laberato Tauoqooqo - who crossed out wide in the 10th minute.

Five minutes later, Blues hooker Zac Patch made a diagonal for the corner, throwing a dummy and going through the Dogs' defensive line with ease. The Blues took the lead for the first time in the 19th minute after Terry Campese put up a huge bomb - and Tauoqooqo could not handle the ball. It spilled, allowing late inclusion at fullback, Matt Parsons, to kick the ball ahead and regather, scoring uncontested. Campese's conversion produced a 10-8 scoreline.

The Bulldogs fought back, with Dillon Rota crossing in the 24th minute and Nick Cornish with five minutes to the break - giving the visitors a 10 point lead. However, the Blues received a red zone penalty one minute remaining in the first half - and they took advantage, with Steki Fetuani stepping through the defence from close range.

The teams went to the break with the Bulldogs leading by just four points, 20-16.

The second half started perfectly for the Blues, after the Bulldogs failed to stop the kick off from bouncing dead. They were forced into a line drop out... and in a flash, Blues second rower Josh Stuckey forced his way over under the posts. After the re-start, it took just one more set for the Blues to cross again, through centre Matthew Cole. In the space of five minutes, the Blues had taken a 28-20 lead.

The Queanbeyan team dominated for long stretches in the second half, and only the Bulldogs' desperate defence kept them in the contest. In the 67th minute, Aritaku Roebens burrowed his way over the line, in one of Goulburn's rare chances in the red zone - and suddenly, they trailed by just two points.

However the Blues secured the game in the final five minutes, with Terry Campese throwing a dummy and running himself - his try and conversion delivering a 34-28 victory.

At O'Connor, the West Belconnen Warriors kept their slim top four chances alive, with a 24-10 win over the Belconnen United Sharks. Warriors winger Trent Vaughan scored a double in the first half, with the visiting team going to half time with an 18-6 lead. They went further ahead 10 minutes into the second half, when prop Bayley Loughhead put in a grubber kick and lock Mitch Shaw took his opportunity to score. In the 58th minute, Sharks winger Iszac Bell scored out wide off the back of a penalty, reducing their deficit to 14 points. But neither team could score in the final 20 minutes.

At Gungahlin, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos had a big 54-0 win over the Bulls - with centre Kaine Pagura and winger Reece Robinson amongst those bagging doubles. And at Greenway, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers won 46-4 against the Yass Magpies. Bushrangers halves Michael Brophy and Wez Alexander scored two tries each.

The Bushrangers remain at the top of competition ladder, three points clear of the Queanbeyan Blues. The Bulldogs have dropped to third place - and the Kangaroos are now just one competition point behind Goulburn. Time is running out for the Warriors and Woden Valley Rams, who remain three competition points adrift of the top four, with just two rounds of the regular season remaining.

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors staying alive but only just

The West Belconnen Warriors' 24-10 victory over the Belconnen Sharks at O'Connor on Saturday has kept their season alive with two rounds remaining of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

"We're still alive, we just need a couple of other sides to do us a favour," Warriors coach Adam Peters said. "We win both our games against Yass and Rams and [the Kangaroos] lose both of theirs and we're in, they're out.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

Round 17 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top four clash between the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Blues

The sixth placed Woden Valley Rams are still desperately holding onto their top four hopes - and must win against the second placed Queanbeyan Blues if they are to do so. There are just two rounds left in the regular season and the defending premiers are three competition points away from the fourth placed Kangaroos.

The Rams are coming off a bye, but are now on a four game losing streak. They've had a tough run, facing the Kangaroos (16-38), Bushrangers (6-28) and Bulldogs (6-49), before being upset by the Sharks at home (18-22) in their last outing.

Last Saturday, the Blues displaced the Goulburn Bulldogs as the No. 2 team on the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder - after winning the battle for second at Seiffert Oval, 34-26. Their only recent loss was a huge upset, losing to the last placed Magpies (36-32) at Walker Park in Round 12. But it is their only defeat in their past eight matches - including a 34 all draw against the Bushrangers in Round 8.

The Blues' player coach, Terry Campese, is back on the field after an absence due to other commitments and suspension. But it has come at exactly the right time for the Queanbeyan outfit. The former Raiders captain turned 35 last weekend, so he's definitely in the veteran class. But he still has the uncanny ability to ensure the game is played at his pace, controlling the tempo perfectly. His passing and kicking game is always a pleasure to watch. Campese has passed the baton of captaincy to centre Jake Wheeler, and it is proving to be a very good double act.

Rams coach Lincoln Withers, has had a tough season after taking over from Ash Barnes as coach. The 2018 premiers have had a fair turnover of playing personnel, but he'll be hoping he can turn it around against his former Raiders team mate. Like Campese, Withers, 38, is in the veteran class - and who knows, this might be the last time the war horses meet on the field. Even though they are playing at home, this will be a very tough match for the Rams to win - and given the recent form lines, I'm tipping a win for the Blues.

Season record: Rams 7 and 7 (6th, -26)
Blues 9 and 3, 2 draws (2nd, +158)

Form: Rams WLLLL
Blues WLWWW

Attacking record: Rams 22, Blues 33 points scored per match

Belconnen United Sharks V Gungahlin Bulls

This is a match-up between two teams already out of the finals race. The Bulls are coming off a huge 54-0 loss to the Kangaroos last week, and they've conceded 102 points in their past two matches. They've had one victory in their past nine games, against the Yass Magpies (34-6). Unfortunately, the Bulls' have had another season severely disrupted by injury.

The Sharks were last year's cellar dwellers - and have spent a long time in the doldrums. When they defeated the Yass Magpies in Round 6 earlier this year, they broke a losing streak that had lasted almost two years. They now have five wins to their name and something to work with in 2020. They suffered a 24-10 loss to the Warriors last week - but will be aiming to finish the season as strongly as they can. They should take out this clash with the Bulls at home.

Season record: Sharks 5 and 9 (7th, -105)
Bulls 3 and 11 (8th, -320)

Form: Sharks LWLWL
Bulls LLWLL

Attacking record: Sharks 20, Bulls 16 points scored per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Kangaroos host the Bushrangers in the match of the round at Freebody, with the Queanbeyan outfit hoping to secure their top four finish with a win over the No. 1 team. The Kangaroos showed no mercy against the Bulls last week, piling on 54 points and holding their opposition scoreless.

The Kangaroos have lost just once in their past six matches - a 28-16 defeat by the Blues in the Queanbeyan derby two weeks ago - and twice in their past nine. Coach Aaron Gorrell is pleased with how the team has gelled over the course of the season.

"I think blokes are just getting used to playing with each other," he said. "We've more or less had the same side for most of those [recent] games and we've got a few combinations going. I guess we've just been a little bit more consistent."

"Early in the year we were thereabouts and lost a few close games, and had a draw with the Blues - which came back to hurt us. But we've got a bit of confidence now and combinations are starting to work. It's been good to see how the team's progressed from the first few weeks."

The Kangaroos have lost half Tre Williams to injury so Gorrell has been forced to make some changes to his line up. It has recently forced Reece Robinson into five eighth, while Kaine Pagura has had to shift to fullback and Bryan Cronan to centre.

Gorrell believes he knows what his best line up is, but his happy he has some players with versatility.

"We're lucky enough to have blokes who can play in a few positions, and are happy to do that," Gorrell said.

"It's been a bit of a process, but once we've got everyone back on deck, I think we've worked out our best combinations and our best positions. On our day, I think we can match any side."

PODCAST: Aaron Gorrell – Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The minor premiership is at stake for the Bushrangers. They are three competition points clear of the Queanbeyan Blues. But if the Bushies lose this one, they will give the Blues a chance of taking the minor premiership from them in the final round - when the two sides meet at Greenway.

The Bushrangers are coming off a bye and are on a five game winning streak. Their last defeat came at the hands of the West Belconnen Warriors, 46-10, at Kippax in Round 10. They have lost just twice all season. They are not the best attacking or defensive team in the competition. They rank fifth for most points scored, and third for fewest points conceded. But they know how to win.

This should be a great game, and the Kangaroos are very difficult to beat in the wide, windy expanses of Freebody Oval. The form lines and the numbers point to a win for the Bushies, but don't be surprised if the more desperate home team gets the win. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Yass Magpies V West Belconnen Warriors

The fifth placed West Belconnen Warriors are another team clinging to their top four hopes, three competition points away from the fourth placed Roos. As is the case for the Rams, this game is a must win for the Warriors. They first have to hope that the Kangaroos slip up in their next two games against the Bushrangers and the Sharks. Then they would also have to defeat the Rams in the final round of the regular season.

Last weekend, the West Belconnen Warriors kept their chances alive, with a 24-10 win over the Sharks. Warriors winger Trent Vaughan scored a double in the first half, with West Belconnen heading to the sheds at half time with an 18-6 lead. A Bayley Loughhead try early in the second half was enough to secure the win. The Warriors had a recent run of losses - against the Blues (12-16), Bulldogs (16-56) and Kangaroos (26-32) - and coach Adam Peters is still ruing the loss to the Roos.

"We're still alive, we just need a couple of other sides to do us a favour," Peters told The Canberra Times after the win over the Sharks. "We win both our games against Yass and Rams and [the Kangaroos] lose both of theirs and we're in, they're out. That's why it was so disappointing two weeks ago when we lost to them."

The Magpies have had a season on field that they might prefer to forget - though 2019 has marked their 100th anniversary. They have won just twice this year and they are on a four game losing streak. This should be a win against the Warriors... but don't forget that upset over the Blues at Walker Park five weeks ago.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 13 (9th, -335)
Warriors 7 and 7 (5th, +68)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have sewn up a top four spot with a big 44-12 win over the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers in Round 17 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. The win for the Roos dashed any hope that the West Belconnen Warriors or Woden Valley Rams could force their way into the finals.

The Kangaroos were well in control at half time at Freebody, leading 20-0, courtesy of tries to Jerimiah Simbiken, winger Fonua Tonga, Bryan Cronan and second rower Josh Ayers. The one way traffic continued for the home team for much the second half. They went to a 38-0 lead in the 67th minute after Tonga competed a hat trick - and prop Jordan Bradley and centre Travis Robinson had scored four pointers. It was a great way for Travis to celebrate his return to the club and playing his first first grade game alongside his twin brother, Reece.

The Bushrangers were unable to score until the 72nd minute, when Josh Mitchell made a break, setting up a try for Jayden Pollard. A minute later, Pollard chased a kick down field and soccered it ahead for the Bushrangers' Robert Sheffield to score. But the Roos capped off the game with a fine individual try to Kaine Pagura in the dying minutes.

The nine try performance from the Kangaroos has sent a shot across the bows of the teams above them on the eve of the finals. But it has also set up a mouth watering clash next week between the Bushrangers and the Queanbeyan Blues at Greenway, which will decide the minor premiership.

The Bushies are now one competition point ahead of the second placed Blues. If the Blues win, they move into first place - while the Bushrangers would finish second, after leading the competition since Round 4. If the Bushrangers win, they secure top spot, while the Blues could be pushed back into third by the Goulburn Bulldogs, on points differential. The Bulldogs face the Gungahlin Bulls next weekend and will be heavily favoured to win that game.

The Blues extinguished the Woden Valley Rams' defence of their 2018 premiership at Phillip - with the visiting Queanbeyan outfit running out 28-12 victors. The Rams had to win both their final two games and hope the Roos would slip up - but neither came to pass. The Warriors put their best foot forward with a 21-6 defeat of the Yass Magpies at Walker Park. But they remain three competition points adrift of the Roos, and now cannot dislodged them, even if they win over the Rams next weekend.

In the final match played on Saturday, the Belconnen United Sharks were big winners at home over the Gungahlin Bulls, with Sharks centre Joseph Vejvoda bagging a double.

It should be a fantastic final round next weekend. And a fantastic finals series awaits.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers "minor" stumble in clash with Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The top four is set, but not top spot. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers missed their first chance to claim it, now they'll have to fight it out with the Queanbeyan Blues for it.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos thumped the Bushrangers 44-12 at Freebody Oval on Saturday to cement their spot in the top four. Meanwhile, Matt Gafa will take over the reins as coach of West Belconnen Warriors in 2020.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

The finalists have been decided in the 2019 Canberra Raiders Cup - and only the order of the top four can change. A great deal hinges on the match of the round - a huge clash between the top two teams, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the Queanbeyan Blues.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Blues

There is just one competition point separating the Bushrangers and Blues - and the winner of this game at Tuggeranong will secure the minor premiership.

The Bushrangers had the opportunity to do that last Saturday at Freebody Oval, but they couldn't get the win over the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Kangaroos were always in control, leading 20-0 at half time and running out big, 44-12 winners. The Bushies were unable to score until the 72nd minute - crossing twice in the space of a couple of minutes for consolation tries to winger Jayden Pollard and Robert Sheffield.

The Bushrangers have lost twice in their past seven games, conceding more than 40 points in the process. However, those losses have been out of character for Tuggeranong - having dropped just three games all season. Generally, they do whatever needs to be done to win. By no means are they the top attacking attacking or defensive team - they rank fifth for most points scored, and fourth for least points conceded - but they've led the competition since Round 4.

The Blues and Bushrangers drew 34 all at Seiffert Oval earlier this year. The Blues led 34-8 at the 60 minute mark, before they conceded four tries in the final 15 minutes - and a penalty goal on full time, after the Blues failed to take a line drop out sufficiently quickly. Captain-coach Terry Campese was sent off for dissent after the incident. Since that match, the Blues have had only one slip up - a 36-32 defeat in Round 12 at the hands of the wooden spooners, the Yass Magpies. They moved into second place just two weeks ago - and now Campese's team have the chance finish the season in first.

Blues captain Jake Wheeler - who took over the role from Campese mid season - says that it is not just the minor premiership at stake on Saturday.

"We're going to get a home semi if we win, it's going to put us in a good position going into the finals," Wheeler said.

He says he's also pleased the Blues will be meeting the No. 1 team in the week prior to the finals series.

"It puts us in a good position to test ourselves, and see where we're at, because obviously they're the top of the table team."

Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka says his team didn't have their heads switched on last week in the loss to the Kangaroos, but things will be different this week.

"I think it was a bit of complacency to be honest with you. The boys have been going pretty well and I thought we didn't have the intensity we needed. especially coming into that game," Teka said.

"Belief is a major thing in the semis, so that's what we're after at the moment, to get back on track and to play the sort of footy we know we can."

PODCAST: Hear from Tuggeranong Bushrangers hooker Josh Mitchell

Even though the Blues have the better attacking and defensive record, I'm tipping a win for the Bushrangers. They just know how to scrap their way to a win, especially on their own home turf. They have lost just once at Greenway all season. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

West Belconnen Warriors V Woden Valley Rams

Both the Warriors and the Rams were knocked out of finals contention last weekend. The Rams have lost their last five games in a row - and were defeated on Saturday, 28-12 by the Blues at home. That loss left the Rams unable to defend their 2018 premiership. The Warriors put their best foot forward last weekend, winning 21-6 over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park. They were hoping the Kangaroos would slip up against the Bushrangers. However, the Roos gave took control over their own destiny, and consigned the Warriors to fifth. The Warriors have won their past three games in a row - and everything points to a win for West Belconnen at Kippax in their final game of the year.

Season record: Warriors 8 and 7 (5th, +83)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Belconnen United Sharks

The fourth placed Kangaroos will be looking to finish the regular season with a win over the seventh placed Sharks at their home ground of Freebody Oval. The Kangaroos cannot miss the finals, after winning six of their last seven matches. However, a win in this match could see them finish third - if the Goulburn Bulldogs were to slip up against the Gungahlin Bulls on Sunday.

The Sharks have now won six matches in 2019 - after taking the wooden spoon, and not winning a match in 2018. They've built themselves up well this season, and now have a springboard into 2020.

The Kangaroos are in very good form, having having knocked over the ladder leading Bushrangers last week - and should win this one. However, don't completely discount the Sharks' chances. They lost to the Roos earlier this year by just one point - and have pulled off some upsets this year.

Season record: Kangaroos 9 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +167)
Sharks 6 and 9 (7th, -73)

Form: Kangaroos WWLWW
Sharks WLWLW

Attacking record: Kangaroos 30, Sharks 21 points scored per match

2018 Rd 7: Queanbeyan Kangaroos 50 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 12 at Freebody Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Gungahlin Bulls

This time last year, both the Bulldogs and Bulls languished in seventh and eighth respectively. After another injury affected season, the Bulls unfortunately find themselves anchored in eighth, with the worst defensive record in the league, and the second worst attack. In contrast, the Bulldogs have experienced a revival, led by what is probably the best spine in the competition - featuring the three Cornish brothers, Mitch, Tyler and Nick, and experienced hooker Jame Aubusson.

The Bulldogs have a chance to finish the season in second - provided they win this contest, and the Queanbeyan Blues lose to the Bushrangers. The two teams would finish level on 26 competition points, but the Bulldogs presently have a huge advantage over the Blues in points differential, to the tune of 139 points.

The Bulldogs have the best attacking and defensive record in the league. They spent 11 rounds of this season in the top two - but were pushed into third place, two weeks ago, after losing to the Blues, 34-26, at Seiffert Oval. They are coming off a bye, and it is difficult to see them do anything but get a win against the Bulls at home. Thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Bulldogs 10 and 5 (3rd, +313)
