Keeping the ball away from former Raider James Tedesco very important.
Kick to spaces, make him cover ground to regather, then move up as one and squash him..
The boys need to limit his meters, kicking down his throat all day won't help..
Play smart boys..

I agree PJ, I think we should almost try to kick it out most sets. Just completely take the moment out of the game and make them start sets from scrums. Probably be a miserable weather so we should try and make it a grind!-PJ- wrote:Keeping the ball away from former Raider James Tedesco very important.

Definitely. Our gameplan should be to play like we did against the Tigers at Bankwest and the first 30 minutes against the Eels.

Tedesco and Keary are definitely the key for them, and Cronk inside the attacking 20. No great insight there. It's just whether our boys execute their kick chase well and maintain pressure on the Roosters kickers.
Discipline is obviously also important. They have a lot of niggly players in their team, so getting sucked into giving away penalties late in the set could kill us.

Re: 2019 Rd 21 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
We've come up with (and more importantly executed) smart game plans for kick returners early this year. Fergo springs to mind. Although Edwards and RTS were able to have their moments against us.
Interesting to see if we do kick out or try the "kick high/to corner and bash him" option we tried on Fergo. Easier to target a winger that way.
I'm more worried when Teddy pops up in support around the ruck actually. He's deadly bursting through there.

The team has previously spoken about how they train to defend with ony 12. I reckon against a team which includes tedesco we are best off defending as a line of 11 keeping one player just behind our defence line to pick off tedescos runs.
This would obviously change once we are withing our own 30-40 but let them try and go around us in their own half

Tedesco around the ruck is the major threat. You can’t plan for it.
Inside defenders must keep the effort up.

Joe Tapine is middling after giving up on life on the Canberra Raiders edge
He wanted to live life on the edge, but now Joe Tapine's happy being stuck in the middle.
"I think the Pommies are doing too good of a job. I'll probably stay in the middle and I'm enjoying my role at the moment," Tapine said. "I get to play alongside [Josh Papalii] and Sia there and [Dunamis Lui] and we have a good little combination. I'm enjoying my footy in the middle at the moment."

In a defensively focussed team I think you are wrong. The Rickman wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 5:47 pm It’s still the wrong positions for both him AND Bateman IMO
In attack I may agree, but that’s not our focus this year.
Re: 2019 Rd 21 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
I think Sticky has it right with Tapine as a large body in the middle. Although the focus has rightfully been on our defence this year, we are not shabby in our 'tries scored' attacking stats either. But it's the D that has us in this ladder position.
No one should forget that after the competition rounds last year we had the second best attack in the NRL but didn't make the finals.

Brandy is a tool - he’s talking up the difference between the warriors being down by 30 at halftime last week and up by 18 this week as if it’s all about the Warriors. As some stage he may have to concede that perhaps the raiders are an ok team!

How good are the Warriors! The winner on Sunday now opens up a nice break to Manly and goes a long way to locking in the four

What side would you play him ? Either Bateman or Elliot can cover lock also, actually they can dominate from there in my opinionThe Rickman wrote:It’s still the wrong positions for both him AND Bateman IMO

I agree with Coastalraider. The Poms on the edge defensively have been a huge factor in the majority of our wins. And Tapine has been great in the middle. It's a win all round.Coastalraider wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 6:19 pmIn a defensively focussed team I think you are wrong. The Rickman wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 5:47 pm It’s still the wrong positions for both him AND Bateman IMO

The poms have been great on the edge for us defensively but also how many games has Tapine had this season at second row? I also think Bateman's defence in the middle could come in handy against certain teams

It's a credit to the whole team that no one has dropped their lip and everyone is playing quality football. We've got a backrow of studs.greeneyed wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 4:30 pm Joe Tapine is middling after giving up on life on the Canberra Raiders edge

It’s a good chance to win tomorrow with the players they have missing. Again, target Verrils for some quick play the balls and then look at Bateman, Cotric and CNK sweeping right. Defensively need the inside to work really hard as they love an out/in play, not to mention Tedesco who breaks tackles easily and sweeps back to the other side. We did a good job on RTS last week, though there are more other players to worry about with the Roosters.
Warriors did us a huge favour. Win this and we are 4 points clear of dropping out of the top 4, with our F/A meaning we are really 3 wins clear with 4 games left. Would be tough to lose it from there. We should be aiming for 2nd, a home final and a home preliminary would be a huge advantage.

Top 2 would be huge. As for the bolded part, I believe the view of the NRL is that we take our 'Home' Prelim to Sydney if we get one. Is that still correct?TongueFTW wrote: ↑August 10, 2019, 8:22 am It’s a good chance to win tomorrow with the players they have missing. That's not correct Wiki.
We played two finals at home in 2016. Lost to Cronulla, beat Penrith and went to Melbourne for a prelim final..enter stage left EdropLee...
I believe the first two weeks of finals is home ground ad..

I’m pretty sure they announced at the start of the season that they have changed that and Canberra will host a home prelim if we can get one.

This is a huge opportunity for us.
Top 2 means we potentially play 2 games at home to make the GF.
We are in position to do this now.
The hard work starts Sunday.
Re: 2019 Rd 21 V Roosters: Teams and Previews *Teams p1*
Yes definitely changed so that Canberra can host a prelim this year.
The goal obviously should be top 2 finish, home game first week of finals. If we can win that game against the chooks or bunnies, we get the week off and a blockbuster playoff for a spot in the big dance probably also against either the chooks or bunnies.

Yep I remember thinking when it was announced early in the year was that it was a nice gesture, but an eampty one for the NRL to make as we were never seen as a chance to take advantage of it.

I agree 100%. Love Tapine but he has definitely shown issues defending out wide in previous years, he doesn't have the best lateral movement and Bateman is a much better defender. Perhaps they can switch a bit in attack and Tapine can get more short balls close to the tryline out wide but defensively this is the best combination for the team IMO.Coastalraider wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 6:19 pmIn a defensively focussed team I think you are wrong. The Rickman wrote: ↑August 9, 2019, 5:47 pm It’s still the wrong positions for both him AND Bateman IMO
In attack I may agree, but that’s not our focus this year.
