Last match: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties crashed to their fourth straight loss in Round 17 - when they were defeated, 24-18, by the St George Illawarra Dragons at Wollongong Stadium two Sundays ago.
Mounties were lacklustre in the first half and trailed 12-0 at the break - after tries to Dragons' hooker Joe Lovodua and prop Lachlan Timm. The Mt Pritchard outfit looked reinvigorated when they came back out of the sheds - and scored two quick tries, to halves Sam Williams and Brendan O'Hagan, inside the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. In the 44th minute, Williams kicked ahead, chased, and then stripped the Dragons of the ball one on one, running 10 metres to score. Five minutes later, Williams grubbered cross field in the in goal for an easy try to O'Hagan. That levelled the match at 12-12, but Mounties' resurgence was short lived.
In the 54th minute, the Dragons took back the lead when bench player Eli Levido pounced on a loose ball in the in goal. They went further ahead when former Raider, Zeik Foster, was on the spot to take a great offload and score under the posts. In the 74th minute, O'Hagan and Sebastian Kris spread the ball wide to winger Tony Satini for a Mounties try in the corner. But it would prove to be too little, too late.
There really weren't a lot of stand out performers for Mounties. Michael Oldfield (161), JJ Collins (145) and Tony Satini (124) topped the metres gained for Mounties, while Tom Starling (41), Jack Murchie (35) and Jarrett Boland (32) topped the tackle count. Collins was the only Mounties forward to break the 100 metres gained mark.
This week: Mounties have dropped to sixth place on the competition ladder, though there are still in touch with the top four. They are just two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Dragons, and four away from the ladder leading Bulldogs.
This week, they face the third placed Penrith at Panthers Stadium - in a warm up match for the NRL clash between the Raiders and Panthers. In their last outing, the Panthers lost to the 11th placed Newcastle Knights, 30-22, in a shock result at Penrith - losing top spot on the ladder in the process. Penrith has also suffered recent losses to the Dragons (24-22) and the Rabbitohs (36-16). Mounties are coming off a bye.
Mounties have been the No. 1 ranked attacking team for some time, but have now been overtaken by the Dragons for most points scored. The Panthers rank a lowly eighth in attack, but they are the No. 1 ranked team in defence. Mounties still rank 10th - in a league of just 12 teams - for most points conceded.
Season record: Mounties 8 and 7, 1 draw (6th, +66)
Panthers 10 and 6 (3rd, +44)
Attack: Mounties 28 points, Panthers 22 points scored per match
Mounties rank 2nd, Panthers 8th
Defence: Mounties 24 points, Panthers 19 points conceded per match
Mounties rank 10th, Panthers 1st
Form: Mounties: WLLLL
Panthers: WLLWL
Recent meetings:
2019 Round 8 - Penrith Panthers 30 defeated Mounties 22 at Aubrey Keech Reserve
2018 Round 24 - Penrith Panthers 34 defeated Mounties 14 at Panthers Stadium
2018 Round 5 - Penrith Panthers 36 defeated Mounties 22 at Aubrey Keech Reserve
Head to head: Mounties 3, Panthers 8
Mounties team changes: Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg fullback Daine Spencer has been promoted to Mounties - following Michael Oldfield's elevation to the Raiders NRL team to cover for the suspended Nick Cotric. Sebastian Kris has been named at centre, after he left the field with a leg injury in the closing stages of Mounties last match against the Dragons. Reubenn Rennie will partner him in the centres, with Matthew Timoko dropping back to Jersey Flegg last week.
Royce Hunt and JJ Collins take over the starting prop positions from Willie Mataka and Steve Tavita. Hudson Young will fill the vacancy left by Hunt in the second row, while Dan Keir replaces Jarrett Boland at lock. Tavita and Boland drop back to the bench.
Our tip: The Panthers will no doubt be favoured to win this match, at home. Mounties have a poor historical record against Penrith - and they lost the earlier encounter between the clubs this year. The Mounties' recent form has also been poor, with the squad disrupted by injury and suspension to Raiders players. The Mt Pritchard team has now lost six of their past seven matches. However, the Panthers recent form has faltered a little as well - and there might be a hint of vulnerability there for Mounties to exploit.
Mounties are scoring enough points to win games, and they have an advantage in that over the Panthers. But it is Mounties' defence that is really letting them down. And that is the Panthers' strong point. If Mounties are to win in this match, their attack will have to be at its best - and the defensive intensity will need to lift. Hopefully, they can spring an upset - as the Knights did last week.

Strong Penrith team with some important returns such as Aekins - expecting a big game from them considering they lost to Newcastle last week
Will be interesting to see how Spencer goes
When is Porter due for return?

Just poor goal line defence from a very tired looking Mounties team. Converted Blore.
Panthers 18-14
Now Mounties try the short kick off. Penalised for off side from the kick. Wasn’t going 10m anyway.

Penrith Panthers charge home to defeat Mounties
A double from Spencer Leniu sparked the Canterbury Cup Panthers to a 24-14 comeback win over Mounties at Panthers Stadium on Sunday.
Leniu, who only earlier this week re-signed with Panthers until the end of the 2021 season, proved the difference with both tries showing off his brute force and determination.

Re: 2019 Mounties
Really thought Mounties would pick back up with Starling, Williams, O'Hagan, Murchie, Kris etc returning but they just can't seem to get any momentum going. Would've been premiership favourites after 8-10 rounds but now they might not even make the finals. Disappointing.
