Round 17 2019. Canberra Raiders 36 - St George Illawarra 14. It was a comprehensive victory for the Canberra Raiders at Wollongong. There was a short period in the second half when the Dragons played well and put on some points. But the thoughts of a comeback were quickly extinguished, when the Raiders steadied and went back to their game plan. Not even the loss of Nick Cotric, sent off for a dangerous tackle with 20 minutes left on the clock, disrupted the Green Machine. The 12 men finished the match off in a courageous fashion.

More on Round 17: As I saw it

The Raiders now return home to Canberra Stadium for a meeting with the Wests Tigers - a match that celebrates the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Green Machine's first premiership in 1989, a win over the Balmain Tigers.

Raiders centre Nick Cotric has been suspended for three weeks, for a dangerous throw in the Dragons match. He's replaced by Michael Oldfield. Josh Papalii returns to the starting side at prop, with Sia Soliola dropping back to the bench. For the Wests Tigers, Robert Jennings has been replaced on the wing by Paul Momirovski.

Late changes: The Canberra Raiders omitted Royce Hunt and Jack Murchie from their squad of 21 on Friday evening. The Wests Tigers have made a range of changes, with fullback Corey Thompson ruled out with an ankle injury. Moses Mbye shifts to full back and former Raider, Michael Chee Kam replaces him at centre. Luke Garner joins the bench, while Tommy Talau and Chris McQueen have travelled with the squad to Canberra as reserves. Oliver Clark

History: The Raiders have won 17 of 36 matches against the Wests Tigers, a 47 per cent win rate. Including games played against the Wests Magpies and Balmain Tigers prior to the joint venture, the Raiders have won 50 of 93 contests. But that 54 per cent win rate is significantly boosted by the 75 per cent win rate against the Magpies. The Tigers have always been a bit of a bogey team for the Raiders... excepting the 1989 Grand Final.

The Raiders have won seven of the past 10 matches between the clubs, and four of the last five. Canberra won 48-12 in Round 15 last year against the Tigers at Campbelltown. But the Tigers turned that result on its head, winning 22-20 at Canberra Stadium in Round 22. Just five rounds ago, the Raiders defeated the Tigers 28-0 at Western Sydney Stadium.

The Raiders have won nine of 19 games played between the clubs at Canberra Stadium. The Raiders have won three of the past five games at the venue against the Tigers - but the Tigers had a five game winning streak in Canberra between 2009 and 2012.

2019 Round 13 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2018 Round 22 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2018 Round 15 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

2017 Round 3 Canberra Raiders V Wests Tigers

Form: Raiders: WWWLW
Tigers: LWWLL

The Tigers lost to the Parramatta Eels, 30-18 at Western Sydney Stadium in their last outing. They have had recent wins over the Rabbitohs (14-9) and Cowboys (27-26) - but have also lost to the Roosters (24-16). The Raiders have now won four of their past five games.

Betting: The Raiders are $1.44 favourites in this match, with the Tigers paying $2.75. The Tigers have a huge 7.5 points start in the line betting. The Tigers' odds have lengthened over the week.

Stat attack: It is a battle between third and 12th on the ladder. The Raiders have a better attacking record - and a much better defensive record than the Tigers.

The Raiders have now climbed to fifth in the attacking rankings - while the Tigers are in 11th. But remember... in absolute terms, there is not much difference between the two teams in points and tries scored per game. Look at the other attacking statistics... like metres gained, line breaks, tackle breaks, try assists, line break assists. The Tigers can be threatening with the ball in hand.

The Raiders have a much clearer advantage in defence. Only the Storm has a better defensive record than the Raiders in 2019, while the Tigers rank 13th. The Tigers have, on average, been forced to do more defensive work in matches and they give up more running metres. Surprisingly, however, they have a better effective tackle rate than the Raiders. Again, a reason for the Raiders to be beware.

Season record: Raiders 10 and 6 (3rd, +103)
Tigers 7 and 9 (11th, -60)

Home and away: Raiders 4 of 7 at home
Tigers 2 of 7 away

Against top eight opposition: Raiders have won 3 of 8
Tigers have won 3 of 11

Attack: Raiders 21 points and 3.5 tries scored per match, ranked 5th
Tigers 18 points and 3.1 tries scored per match, ranked 11th

Defence: Raiders 15 points and 2.6 tries conceded per match, ranked 2nd
Tigers 21 points and 3.4 tries conceded per match, ranked 13th

Completion rate: Raiders 79 per cent
Tigers 77 per cent

Running: Raiders 1558 running metres from 174 runs, 185 kick return metres, 441 post contact metres per match
Tigers 1562 running metres from 183 runs, 166 kick return metres, 477 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 31, Tigers 30

Line breaks: Raiders 4, Tigers 3 per match

Try assists: Raiders 2, Tigers 2 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Tigers 2 per match

Offloads: Raiders 8, Tigers 10 per match

Kicking: Raiders 594 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Tigers 589 kicking metres from 21 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 329 made, 30 missed, 13 ineffective per match
Tigers 357 made, 23 missed, 13 ineffective per match

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1369, Tigers 1453 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 10, Tigers 10 per match

Penalties: Raiders 7, Tigers 6 per match

Our tip: There is no easy match in the NRL. That is what the Raiders must tell themselves all week. They held the Tigers to nil in their last meeting. They had a great win against the Dragons last week. The Raiders are deserved favourites. But they cannot, they must not, be complacent this week. The Tigers can beat any of the top teams on their day.

Prior to the last meeting between the clubs, I mentioned how the Raiders had never beaten the Wests Tigers with both Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah in the team. Well now they have. I mentioned how Benji Marshall had only lost only one game from 19 against the Raiders, while Farrah has won 14 of 20. Add one win in favour of the Raiders. In any case, this is a game where these sorts of statistics should no longer count - if Canberra is to be a serious threat this year. It is simple. If the Raiders bring the attack and defence that they displayed against the Dragons they should win. Raiders by eight.

What they're saying:

Josh Papalii: "Origin is past me now. I've left that. The focus is fully on Raiders now and hopefully making the top four, finding some form and combinations before finals."

So..

1989 GF hero Steve Jackson will blow the horn today yes ?

On such a huge day for the club it's ironic that Raider #89 Steve Jackson is the ambassador today celebrating the 89 GF win.

I think we'll win 89-0

Yeah fitting, I don't know where I plucked ironic from.

Big big night at Canberra Stadium tonight...

And the after party at Fergus's place will be a hoot, especially with Cueball in town...

Mbye has never seemed comfortable under the high ball. Need to really target him. Would be good to see Sezer bombing for Jack to run through (a la Maloney/Tom T in Origin II).

I am in no way worried about this game. 2019 raiders have a different mentality. Home game, old boys day, hall of fame dinner last night, anniversary of 89, and it’s he tigers.

Time to move into second when the Cowboys beat the Bunnies.

Game day game day game day!

I can't decide whether I'd prefer us to run up a cricket score or whether I'd prefer us to hold them to 0 again. Decisions, decisions.

Well, I figure I'd best not be too greedy in my expectations, and then I can be happily surprised.

Agreed. Vital game - the Panthers will come hard next week and we want a buffer between us and them on the table.

Unfortunately Steve is unable to blow the horn, as his breathing is too powerful and the horn would shatter.

Pleased to report that the sun is shining - at last! - and there isn’t much wind. It’s going to be pretty freezing by 5:30 which should suit the Raiders. A perfect evening for footy. Go Raiders, we need a big win. My nerves cant cope with another cliff hanger. 💚💛💚💙💚

Yup. Shoulda been 66-6 but you know, the skipper had to make it fair for everyone.

Frank says Raiders FTW!Image
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.
