Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have maintained their position at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder after a last gasp, 24-20, win over the Bulldogs at Goulburn on Sunday afternoon. They snatched victory in the final minutes of the game, with Connor Massen's try breaking the hearts of the home team.

Fullback Tristan Eldridge gave the Bushrangers an early 4-0 lead, when he made a great run to score in the corner after eight minutes. Tuggeranong followed up quickly, with winger Connor Massen scoring the first of his two tries in the 14th minute. Half Michael Brophy put up a bomb - and when the Bulldogs were unable to defuse it, Massen was there on the spot to pick up the ball and run 10 metres to the line. Josh Mitchell's conversion from out wide gave Tuggeranong a 10-0 lead.

The home team fought back in the 19th minute, after five eighth Mitch Cornish threw a long cut out pass to winger Steven Cummins who scored in the corner. In the 31st minute, Mitch Cornish ran at the line himself, grabbing a four pointer from close range. Chris Hart's conversion levelled the scores at 10 apiece.

The Bushies were the first to score in the second half, when Josh Mitchell put Drury Low over for a very simple try in the 44th minute.

But the Bulldogs struck back again in the 56th minute, with Mitch Cornish in the thick of things. He started a back line move which saw Patrick Cooke cross in the corner - and the scores were again level at 14 each. Five minutes later, the Bulldogs took the lead for the first time in the game. Half Nick Cornish kicked ahead and chased - and when the Bushrangers were unable to handle the ball, he kicked and chased again, regathering and scoring under the posts. Chris Hart converted for a 20-14 lead.

In the 66th minute, Goulburn was on the attack in the red zone - but winger Jayden Pollard intercepted and ran almost the length to score, putting Tuggeranong within two points. The match remained precariously poised until the shadows of full time, when Michael Brophy broke the game open. He produced a perfectly placed kick to the Goulburn goal line, for Connor Massen to score the extraordinary match winner. Josh Mitchell converted, with the siren blaring a second later.

On Saturday, the Queanbeyan Blues ran out 16-12 winners over the West Belconnen Warriors in a hard fought, absorbing battle at Seiffert Oval.

A smoking ceremony held prior to the Queanbeyan Blues Indigenous Round match.

The Blues were fast out of the blocks, with hooker Joel Munro crossing from dummy half in just the second minute - the conversion from fullback Matt Parsons producing a 6-0 lead. It took until the 27th minute for the next points to be scored, with Warriors lock Bailey Loughead stepping and dummying and finally reaching out to ground the ball over the line. Almost 10 minutes later, Brent Crisp put West Belconnen forward Ben Sione into a hole and he went over untouched. The Warriors took a 12-6 lead to the half time break.

Nine minutes into the second half, Queanbeyan's Sateki Fetuani dived over the line from dummy half and Matt Parson's conversion tied it all up. A big dust up in the 63rd minute saw both teams reduced to 12 men. The Warriors' Bailey Loughhead and the Blues' Steve McLean were sent from the field, after punches flew. Just four minutes later, the deadlock was broken when Parsons produced a stunning long range try for the home team, goose stepping on his way down the grandstand touchline. Parsons was unable to convert his own try - but ultimately, that did not matter. Neither team could add to their tally in a tense final 10 minutes.

In other games, the Woden Valley Rams had a big 48-10 win over the Gungahlin Bulls at Phillip District. Former Raiders junior Chevi Ellis scored a hat trick for the home team. The Bulls ended the match with just 11 fit players after four were ruled out after head knocks. Finally, in a surprisingly low scoring match, the Kangaroos had a 10-0 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park.

The Bushrangers retain their hold on the top spot on the ladder, but the Blues and Rams are challenging. The Blue have now moved into second and the Rams into third, split by points differential. The Bulldogs have fallen from second to fourth, while the Kangaroos have jumped over the Warriors into fifth.

Table topper a heart stopper as Tuggeranong Bushrangers steal late win

It was a finish fitting of a top-of-the-table clash. Although the Goulburn Bulldogs might disagree. A cross-field Michael Brophy kick to the corner and a classy finish from Connor Massen in the dying minutes sent the Tuggeranong Bushrangers back to the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Preview

Image

Round 12 of the Canberra Raiders Cup sees the top four teams aiming to defend their position on the ladder, all meeting teams outside the four. The biggest clash will take place at Freebody Oval, when the fifth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the third placed Woden Valley Rams. For the Kangaroos - just one competition point adrift of the fourth placed Goulburn Bulldogs - it is a real opportunity to force their way into the top echelon of teams.

Gungahlin Bulls V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The first placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers travel north to Gungahlin to meet the eighth placed Bulls. The Bulls have pulled off a couple of upsets this season - over top competition, in the Rams and the Blues - with young Raiders half Brendan O'Hagan in the line up. But for the most part, it has been a long, hard season for the Bulls.

The Bulls have the worst attacking and defensive record in the league - and they are now on a four game losing streak. They suffered a big 48-10 loss to the Woden Valley Rams last weekend - after they finished the game with just 11 fit men. They lost four players after they suffered head knocks, with the Bulls' strict head injury protocol ruling them out of the match.

In their last outing, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers had a 24-20 win over the Bulldogs in a top of the table clash at Goulburn. An intercept try for Bushrangers winger Jayden Pollard in the 66th minute saw the visitors trailing by just two points - and the match remained precariously poised until the shadows of full time. And then Tuggeranong half Michael Brophy broke the game open. He produced a perfectly placed kick towards the Goulburn goal line, for Connor Massen to regather and score a last gasp match winner - breaking the hearts of the Bulldogs. Josh Mitchell converted, with the siren blaring a second later.

Tuggeranong is not the best attacking or defensive team in the competition - but they certainly know how to win a close contest. It would be surprising if this match was a close contest however. The Bushies should win and win well. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Bulls 2 and 7, (8th, -240)
Bushrangers 7 and 2, 1 draw (1st, +22)

Form: Bulls WLLLL
Bushrangers WDWLW

Attacking record: Bulls 15, Bushrangers 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 42, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 5: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 26 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 6 at Greenway

2018 Rd 16: Gungahlin Bulls 22 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 12 at Gungahlin
2018 Rd 7: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 51 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 10 at Greenway

Belconnen United Sharks V Goulburn Bulldogs

After an extended period in the doldrums, the Belconnen United Sharks have found a way to win in 2019. When they defeated the Yass Magpies in Round 6 earlier this year, they broke a losing streak that had lasted almost two years. They have now won three of their past five contests - and lost one match, to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, by a single point.

The Sharks forwards have been hard working, while hooker Matthew Butz has stepped up to lead the team in the absence of big name recruit, Glen Buttriss. Buttriss has played just one game this year, the first, due to injury. Outside backs Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai and Joe Vejvoda have added strike in attack to the Sharks' repertoire. They have now scored nine tries between them.

The Sharks should come into this match against the Goulburn Bulldogs rested after a bye. However, the Sharks were well beaten in their last outing, by the Queanbeyan Blues, 34-10 - and they will want to turn that around this week.

The Bulldogs' loss to the Bushrangers on Sunday saw them fall from second place on the ladder to fourth. They have lost three of their past five matches, after a great start to the season. However they remain the top attacking team in the competition - and only the Rams have a better defensive record this season. Led by Mitch and Nick Cornish in the halves, and James Aubusson at hooker, the Bulldogs have become a real force in the league.

This should be a good contest and, given the recent form lines, the Sharks have a good shot at producing an upset. But given the Bulldogs record of consistency this year, the visitors will deservedly be favoured to come away with the competition points.

Season record: Sharks 3 and 6 (7th, -79)
Bulldogs 6 and 4 (4th, +158)

Form: Sharks WWLWL
Bulldogs LWWLL

Attacking record: Sharks 21, Bulldogs 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 29, Bulldogs 20 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2018 Rd 10: Goulburn Bulldogs 20 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 12 at Goulburn Arena
2018 Rd 1: Goulburn Bulldogs 30 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 24 at O'Connor

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Woden Valley Rams

This shapes as the match of the round. While the Kangaroos have spent the entire season outside the top four, their form has improved over the course of the year. Both teams have won four of their past five games. The teams have an almost identical attacking and defensive record. Both teams have a positive points differential of 65. The Rams, however, have been the more consistent team, with two more victories to their name than the Kangaroos.

The Rams had big win over the Bulls last weekend. Former Raiders junior Chevi Ellis scored a hat trick for the home team and his coach Lincoln Withers was understandably proud of the impact the second rower made.

"Chevi Ellis ... probably could've played further on [in higher tier competitions]. He's been up in Queensland [with the Norths Devils], came back this year for us," Withers told The Canberra Times. "He's a really good signing for us ... he's a big body, he's played a bit of rugby."

The Kangaroos defeated the last placed Magpies on Saturday - but it was an unexpectedly close, and low scoring game. Neither team scored during the first half. While the Kangaroos scored just after the break, through winger Kaine Pagura, they held a lead of just 4-0 for almost the entirety of the second half. It was not until the final minutes that the Kangaroos scored their second try - through Fonua Tonga in the corner - setting up the 10-0 win.

The Kangaroos are a very difficult team to beat on the wide expanses of Freebody Oval - and they will see this as a chance to possibly push their way into the top four. The Rams got the Kangaroos at Phillip earlier this season, but we'll tip the Roos to win this one on their home turf.

Season record: Kangaroos 5 and 4, 1 draw (5th, +65)
Rams 7 and 3 (3rd, +65)

Form: Kangaroos WWLWW
Rams WWLWW

Attacking record: Kangaroos 27, Rams 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 20, Rams 19 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 5: Woden Valley Rams 24 defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 22 at Phillip

2018 Rd 11: Queanbeyan Kangaroos 22 drew Woden Valley Rams 22 at Freebody Oval
2018 Rd 2: Woden Valley Rams 38 defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 16 at Phillip District

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Blues

The Yass Magpies have been struggling in 2019 and have only one win to their name. They are now on a seven game losing streak. They did well to hold the Kangaroos to just 10 points in Round 11, but were unable to score a point themselves. On average, they have conceded almost 20 points more than have scored.

The Queanbeyan Blues - despite the absence of captain-coach Terry Campese from the playing field in recent weeks - are in fine form. They won a tough, absorbing battle against the West Belconnen Warriors last week, 16-12 at Seiffert Oval. They're now on a three game winning streak and have moved into second place on the ladder. While this match is being played at Walker Park, the visiting Blues should win this match, and by a good margin.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 9 (9th, -181)
Blues 6 and 2, 2 draws (2nd, +128)

Form: Magpies LLLLL
Blues LDWWW

Attacking record: Magpies 15, Blues 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 33, Blues 21 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 5: Queanbeyan Blues 60 defeated Yass Magpies 12 at Seiffert Oval

2018 Rd 10: Yass Magpies 14 defeated Queanbeyan Blues 10 at Walker Park

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have staved off a brave Gungahlin Bulls - winning another close contest and maintaining their position at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder.

The Goulburn Bulldogs have moved back into second place - after both the Queanbeyan Blues and the Woden Valley Rams were defeated. The Blues were sensationally beaten by the Yass Magpies, 36-32, at Walker Park - with the Magpies recording just their second win of the season. And at Freebody Oval, the Rams suffered a 38-16 loss to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos - but that was not enough to lift the Roos into the top four. The Kangaroos remain one point adrift of the fourth placed Rams.

At Gungahlin, the Bulls challenged the Bushrangers right up until the final siren. Gungahlin has been affected by injuries - after they finished their last match with just 11 fit players in Round 11 - and have won just two games all season. But they certainly lifted against the ladder leaders.

Coach David Howell, who had not played a game since 2016, stepped forward in his team's hour of need, and performed strongly at five eighth. He scored the first try inside the opening five minutes - and was involved in just about everything through the match.

The Bushrangers hit back in the 23rd minute, when winger Jayden Pollard made a big run down the left side - and centre Ngarima Low backed up on the inside for the first Tuggeranong try. The Josh Mitchell conversion saw the Bushies take a 6-4 lead. Five minutes later, the home team was back in the lead, after Dylan Hately regathered a ricocheted kick and ran 10 metres to score. While there was a hint of a lost ball, the referee ruled it had been correctly grounded first - and the Bulls had a 10-6 advantage.

With eight minutes to the break, the Bushrangers' Jordan Martin took advantage of some broken play, picking up the ball and making a big run downfield before offloading to centre Michael O'Malveney. O'Malveney then kicked infield for the Tuggeranong chasers - and Raiders Under 20s forward Matthew Dragisic was on the spot to score. The Bushrangers were again in front after the Josh Mitchell conversion, and took a 12-10 lead to the half time break.

Tuggeranong scored two tries in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. In the 52nd minute, half Michael Brophy threw a beautiful long pass to centre Ngarima Low - cutting out two players. He quickly offloaded to unmarked winger Jayden Pollard for four points. Six minutes later, Josh Baker threw a great pass to bench forward Ben Nanese, who ran straight through the Gungahlin defensive line - and suddenly the Bushrangers led 22-10.

At that stage, it looked like Tuggeranong might run away with the match. But that was not to be. The Bulls quickly returned serve, with David Howell offloading to winger Ratu Jone Pio - who then rampaged up the sideline to score. The Bulls were right back in the contest. It looked like they had scored another try five minutes later, when Gungahlin kicked deep down field, one pass off the scrum base in their own red zone. Winger Dean Aylott streaked down field and won the race to the ball, planting the ball under the posts. But it was ruled no try, disallowed for off side.

In a huge turnaround, the Bushies then went down the other end of the field and scored in the next set. On the last tackle Josh Mitchell put up a bomb, and Jordan Martin was there to regather - and sent it out to winger Connor Massen, who crossed out wide. That gave the visitors a 26-10 lead.

In an extraordinary finish, Bulls forward Matt Fellows scored a double inside the final 10 minutes. With nine minutes left, some good offloading amongst the forwards set Fellows up for the first of them - and they were within six. Then with five minutes remaining, David Howell flicked the ball inside for a charging Fellows to score again - but Dylan Hately was unable to get the relatively easy conversion.

The Bulls were short by just two, 26-24,and it set up a thrilling final few minutes. But ultimately, neither team was able to add to their tally.

At Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos went out to a 12-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, before the Woden Valley Rams came back. The Rams scored three tries in a row. with winger Stephen Henderson first crossing in the corner in the 26th minute. They followed that up five minutes later, when Brayden Robertson stepped back inside to score under the posts. Five minutes from the break, bench forward Solomone Kaufusi crashed over in mid field - giving the Rams a 16-12 lead at half time.

However, that was the last of the scoring for the Rams. The Kangaroos took the lead eight minutes into the second half when Bayley Hitchcock took advantage of a Rams error - running 20 metres to score. The match remained tight two point contest until the 58th minute, when a dropped bomb from the Rams saw Josh Ayres go over under the posts. And it was all the Kangaroos in the final 20 minutes, the home team piling on another three tries.

At Walker Park, the Yass Magpies pulled off a huge upset, defeating the second placed Queanbeyan Blues. The Blues led 16-6 at half time, but Yass kept themselves right in the contest in the second half - taking the lead 22-20 in the 60th minute.

With 12 minutes remaining, the Blues had a 32-22 lead - but Yass again fought back. Four minutes later, fullback Bayley Maher crossed to bring the Magpies within four points. And when second rower Jai Smith scored, there were scenes of jubilation. Shaun Davis converted from out wide, and the Magpies had a two point advantage, with five minutes left. A Davis penalty goal in the shadows of full time produced the stunning 36-32 win.

In the final match of the round, the Goulburn Bulldogs were far too good for the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor. The Bulldogs led 24-0 at half time and ran out 34-6 winners, with half Nick Cornish scoring a double for the visitors. The Sharks produced a single, consolation try to prop Sonny Tupulola, just before full time - his sixth of the season.

Emerging half Nicholas Cornish orchestrates Goulburn Bulldogs Canberra Raiders Cup rout

Skinny blonde halfback Nick Cornish would so often be the first bloke hulking front-rowers would want to pick out of a defensive line. Not so much any longer.

"I'm really proud of Nicholas, his defence has really improved on last year and I think that's really helping his attacking game as well," Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

Round 13 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the replay of the 2018 Grand Final, with the Woden Valley Rams hosting the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday at Phillip.

Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Rams won an epic premiership decider last season by a solitary point. The match looked to be all over after 50 minutes, when the Rams went to a 30-0 lead - but the Bushrangers then staged the most remarkable come back, piling on 30 points of their own. A Lincoln Withers field goal inside the final five minutes ultimately proved to be the difference. And when the final siren sounded, the Rams had extended their unbeaten run to 13 games and had taken their first premiership title in 22 years.

The two teams now prepare for their second clash of 2019 - with the Rams taking the honours at Greenway earlier this year, in Round 6.

The Bushrangers have been the most consistent team this season, losing just one other match in 2019 - a 46-10 thrashing at the hands of the West Belconnen Warriors three weeks ago.

Tuggeranong won narrowly over a brave Gungahlin Bulls last Saturday - and not only retained first place on the ladder, but moved three competition points clear of any challenger. The lowly ranked Bulls were so affected by injury, coach David Howell was forced to pull on the boots for his first match since retiring in 2016. They really lifted against the ladder leaders, and challenged the Bushrangers right up to the final siren. But Tuggeranong again did what they do best - win a close contest - and took the match 26-24.

The Bushrangers are not top of the ladder because they have the best attack or defence in the competition. They rank fourth in attack and - after that big loss to the Warriors - sixth in defence. They have a points differential of just +24, considerably below some of the other top teams. But most weeks they do whatever is needed to win.

The Rams' form in 2019 has not been as strong as the team that was undefeated for 13 games in 2018. They have had the challenge of dealing with turnover in the coaching and playing ranks. But new coach Lincoln Withers has led them to just one fewer victory than the Bushrangers this season.

The Rams were last start losers, going down to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 38-16, at Freebody Oval. The Kangaroos went out to a 12-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, before the Rams came back with three tries, taking a 16-12 lead to the break. But it was all the Roos in the second half, with some key errors from the Rams proving costly. They will no doubt be very keen to turn that around in this match.

This should be a very good contest. The teams have an almost identical attacking record, while the Rams have been slightly better in defence. The Bushrangers have the better recent form. But the Rams have won the past four matches between these two clubs and they will be on their home turf. The Bushrangers will no doubt be favourites, but don't be surprised if the Rams get the competition points. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Queanbeyan Blues V Gungahlin Bulls

The Queanbeyan Blues were shock losers to the last placed Yass Magpies last weekend at Walker Park. The Blues led 16-6 at half time, but Yass kept themselves right in the contest in the second half. With 12 minutes remaining, the Blues had a 32-22 lead - but Yass fought back in the final 10 minutes. First, fullback Bayley Maher crossed to bring the Magpies within four points. And when second rower Jai Smith scored, there were scenes of jubilation. Shaun Davis converted from out wide, and the Magpies had a two point advantage, with five minutes left. A Davis penalty goal in the shadows of full time produced the stunning 36-32 win.

The Bulls are now on a five game losing streak, but they were gallant in their two point loss to the Bushrangers in their last outing. Gungahlin was significantly affected by injury, but that was not evident on the field on Saturday. The team was committed and determined.

The Bulls' last victory was against the Blues at Gungahlin in Round 6 - a 24-22 upset. That day, Gungahlin had the benefit of Raiders and Mounties half Brendan O'Hagan to help steer them around. Bulls coach David Howell did a great job of that in his comeback against the Bushrangers last week - so their chances in this one might depend on whether he produces a repeat. However, almost everything points to a Blues win in this match. The Bulls rank last in the league in attack and defence - and have conceded an average 40 points per game, while scoring just 16. It is difficult to see the Blues being upset two weeks in a row.

Season record: Blues 6 and 3, 2 draws (3rd, +124)
Bulls 2 and 8, (8th, -242)

Form: Blues DWWWL

2018 Rd 4: Queanbeyan Blues 36 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 16 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Yass Magpies V Belconnen United Sharks

The Yass Magpies are placed last - but broke through for a desperately needed win over the top four Queanbeyan Blues in their last match. They will get some much needed confidence from that performance.

The Sharks were last year's cellar dwellers - and have spent a long time in the doldrums. When they defeated the Magpies in Round 6 earlier this year, they broke a losing streak that had lasted almost two years. They have now recorded three wins this season - but that is now just one more than Yass. The Sharks were soundly beaten by Goulburn in their last outing. The Bulldogs led 24-0 at half time and ran out 34-6 winners. The Sharks produced a single, consolation try to prop Sonny Tupulola, just before full time.

The Sharks have a better form line than the Magpies - and the better attacking and defensive record. But based on last weekend's performances, the Magpies will be tough opponents at home. Don't be surprised if Yass produce a bit of an upset and chalk up their third win of the season.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 9 (9th, -177)
Sharks 3 and 7 (7th, -107)

Form: Magpies LLLLW
Sharks WLWLL

Attacking record: Magpies 17, Sharks 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 33, Sharks 30 points conceded per match

2018 Rd 2: Yass Magpies 22 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 18 at Walker Park

Goulburn Bulldogs V West Belconnen Warriors

The Bulldogs host the West Belconnen Warriors at Goulburn on Sunday - in what shapes as one of the best contests of the weekend. Goulburn moved back into second place after their big win over the Sharks last weekend. They rank first in the league in both and defence - and are being brilliantly led by the Cornish brothers in the halves, and James Aubusson at hooker.

Nick and Mitch Cornish now have 19 tries between them, while Aubusson has six. Nick and Mitch were amongst the top four contenders for the McIntyre Medal when voting went behind closed doors at the half way point of the season - and they'll certainly challenge the Bushrangers' Josh Mitchell and the Blues' Jake Wheeler for the ultimate prize.

West Belconnen are coming off a bye, but they were last start, 16-12 losers to the Queanbeyan Blues in a hard fought, absorbing battle at Seiffert Oval.

The Warriors showed they can beat the best - after thrashing the Bushrangers three weeks ago. Veteran halves Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts and fullback Ryan McQueen really put it together that day - and they will need to pull that sort of game out of the kit bag if they're to challenge Goulburn. This should be a very good contest - but we will tip the home team in this one.

Season record: Bulldogs 7 and 4 (2nd, +186)
Warriors 5 and 5 (6th, +62)

Form: Bulldogs WWLLW
Warriors LLWWL

Attacking record: Bulldogs 36, Warriors 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 19, Warriors 22 points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Blues show heart for indigenous artist

When the Queanbeyan Blues Rugby League Club players take the field, they always wear their hearts on their sleeves.

For the recent Canberra Raiders Cup Indigenous round, the club’s senior teams also wore the heart of the Indigenous community on their jumpers when they ran onto Seiffert Oval against the West Belconnen Warriors.

Canberra Raiders Cup: 'I kind of need my brain' says Gungahlin Bulls forward Jason Brown

After four head knocks, Jason Brown had no hesitation in taking the doctor's advice to draw the curtain on his season. The 27-year-old was one of three Gungahlin Bulls who were concussed and couldn't finish the game against Woden Valley two weeks ago.

"It's just something I've got to keep an eye on. I'm not an NRL player so I kind of need my brain after footy.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Wrap

Image

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have continued on their winning ways - and took a small slice of revenge when they defeated their 2018 Grand Final opponents - and the defending premiers - the Woden Valley Rams, 28-6.

The sun was shining at Phillip District, but the wind was coming right off the Snowy Mountains - and by the end of the match, the apparent temperature was -6C due to the wind chill. The Bushrangers, however, didn't seem to mind at all. They started on fire.

Five eighth Wezley Alexander opened the scoring in the eighth minute, taking advantage of some good field position and making a beeline for the try line. It was simply good individual running. They followed up in spectacular fashion in the 16th minute, when Ngarima Low made a break deep in the Bushrangers' own half - and running 80 metres to score. The regular centre was playing in the No. 1 jersey - and it was simply blistering speed which delivered four points.

Tuggeranong lead 10-0, but the Rams worked their way back into the match - building more possession and territory. That gave hooker Mitch Souter an opportunity close to the line, and he took it, scoring a simple try from dummy half. The Rams drew within four points of the visitors.

Four minutes later, however, the Bushies' sensational backs were at it again. Winger Connor Massen defused a grubber from Brayden Robertson on the Tuggeranong goal line - and then ran 100 metres to score under the posts. It was a breath taking run, with with the Rams chasers desperately launching themselves at his feet to stop him, but to no avail. With Josh Mitchell's conversion, the Bushrangers went to the break with a 16-6 lead.

The second half was mostly a grind. Former Canberra Raiders forward Jarrad Kennedy scored a typical second rower's try seven minutes in, extending Tuggeranong's advantage to 16. Both teams had their chances in the second half, but nothing came of them until the 69th minute. Tuggeranong half Michael Brophy put up a cross field bomb - and the ball was stolen from the grasp of the Rams and passed back in field for Brophy to score.

The victory broke the Rams' four game winning streak against the Bushrangers in style. They remain three competition points clear of their nearest rivals. The Rams, meanwhile, will drop out of the top four. The Queanbeyan Kangaroos will jump over them - as the Roos will pick up a guaranteed two competition points from the bye.

In the other matches on Saturday, the Belconnen United Sharks had a huge 38-0 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park - with the home team unable to repeat the heroics of Round 12 when they upset the Queanbeyan Blues. The Sharks scored a total of eight tries, with fullback Matthew Butz and centre Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai getting doubles. Glen Buttriss, a late inclusion after missing almost all of the season through injury, also got a four pointer. At Seiffert Oval, the Queanbeyan Blues were too good for the Gungahlin Bulls, running out 30-16 winners. Josh Stuckey scored a double, while veteran former Raider Joel Monaghan scored a try and three goals.

On Sunday, the Goulburn Bulldogs inflicted a 40 point defeat on the West Belconnen Warriors, scoring 10 tries in a 56-16 thrashing. Winger Steven Cummins scored a hat trick for Goulburn, while Tyler Cornish scored a double on his return from a broken jaw.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers end Woden Valley hoodoo in style

The Bushrangers beat the Woden Valley Rams 28-6 at Phillip on Saturday, ending a four-game losing streak against their southern rivals which included last year's Canberra Raiders Cup grand final.

"It's a good sign for us mentally to get up over Woden because it's the first time in five games we've beaten them," coach Jarrad Teka said. "We've got the belief that we can win having beaten the champions last year.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Steven Cummins hat-trick sets up Goulburn Bulldogs win over West Belconnen Warriors

On his return from a broken jaw, Tyler Cornish helped the Bulldogs make a major statement in a 56-16 thrashing of the West Belconnen Warriors in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Goulburn Arena on Sunday.

"We had Tyler come back this week, and mate, he's an absolutely incredible player. He's one of the bravest guys I've seen," Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

There are just five rounds remaining in the regular season of the Canberra Raiders Cup and the race to the finals is intensifying. The match of the round features the Goulburn Bulldogs up against the Woden Valley Rams on Saturday - and the Rams will be desperate for a win after being pushed out of the top four last weekend. The Bulldogs, however, will be aiming to confirm their grip on a top two placing.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Belconnen United Sharks

The ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the seventh placed Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway on Saturday afternoon. Tuggeranong is three competition points clear of their nearest challenger - and they will be looking to maintain that advantage.

Last weekend the Bushies took a small slice of revenge when they defeated their 2018 Grand Final opponents - and the defending premiers - the Woden Valley Rams, 28-6, at Phillip.

The win broke a four game losing streak for Tuggeranong against the Rams - and while coach Jarred Teka doesn't want to look too far ahead, he believes the win will be a boost for his team as they approach the business end of the season.

"It's a good sign for us mentally to get up over Woden because it's the first time in five games we've beaten them," Teka told The Canberra Times.

"Now that mental block is gone we've got the belief that we can win having beaten the champions last year."

The Sharks were last year's cellar dwellers - and have spent a long time in the doldrums. When they defeated the Yass Magpies in Round 6 earlier this year, they broke a losing streak that had lasted almost two years.

They have now recorded four wins this season - including a big 38-0 last week over the Magpies. The Sharks scored a total of eight tries against Yass, with fullback Matthew Butz and centre Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai getting doubles. Glen Buttriss, a late inclusion after missing almost all of the season through injury, also got a four pointer.

The Bushrangers won't want to treat this match lightly - as the Sharks of 2019 are no easy beats. Tuggeranong are stronger on paper and should win... but as the old adage goes, matches are not won on paper. That was underlined earlier this year, when the Sharks lost to the Bushrangers by just two points.

Season record: Bushrangers 9 and 2, 1 draw (1st, +46)
Sharks 4 and 7 (7th, -69)

Form: Bushrangers WLWWW
Sharks LWLLW

Attacking record: Bushrangers 25, Sharks 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 22, Sharks 27 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 3: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 26 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 24 at O'Connor

2018 Rd 15: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 22 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 16 at Greenway
2018 Rd 6: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 40 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 10 at O'Connor

Gungahlin Bulls V Yass Magpies

The Spoon Bowl. It is a battle between eighth and ninth, the bottom two clubs. Sadly for the clubs concerned, this match may ultimately decide which of them takes the wooden spoon in 2019. Both teams were last start losers. The Magpies didn't score a point in a 38 point thrashing at the hands of the Sharks, while the Bulls went down to the Blues, 30-16.

Both teams have won just two matches this season. They played some good football in their upsets over more fancied rivals - and not just in those games. But both clubs have faced some big challenges, with turnover and/or injury. The Bulls are now on a six game losing streak, while the Magpies have won one game in their past nine. The Bulls are above the Magpies on the competition ladder, yet Gungahlin has scored fewer points and conceded more than any team in the league. Based on average points scored per match, the Magpies have the worst attacking record, while the Bulls have the worst defensive record.

This is a tough match to tip and it is almost a flip of the coin. But given the Bulls' recent injury problems, we'll go with the Magpies - despite the fact Gungahlin will be on home turf.

Season record: Bulls 2 and 9, (8th, -256)
Magpies 2 and 10 (9th, -215)

Form: Bulls LLLLL
Magpies LLLWL

Attacking record: Bulls 16, Magpies 15 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 39, Magpies 33 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 3: Yass Magpies 48 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 14 at Walker Park

2018 Rd 17: Yass Magpies 32 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 12 at Walker Park
2018 Rd 8: Yass Magpies 30 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 16 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Goulburn Bulldogs V Woden Valley Rams

In the final match on Saturday, the second placed Goulburn Bulldogs host the defending premiers, the Woden Valley Rams. The Rams dropped to fifth after their loss to the Bushrangers. The are only one competition point adrift of the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos, but they will be desperate to get back into the top four.

In their last outing, the Goulburn Bulldogs inflicted a 40 point defeat on the West Belconnen Warriors, scoring 10 tries in a 56-16 thrashing. Winger Steven Cummins scored a hat trick for Goulburn, while Tyler Cornish scored a double on his return from a broken jaw.

The Goulburn Bulldogs are no doubt happy with how the club is travelling under coach Adam Kyle. He's just been re-signed for a further two seasons. But this week, he's firmly focused on the challenge of the Rams.

"They'll be desperate this week. I think possibly a loss could end their season this week for them. So we know they're coming to get us, so we're really excited about the challenge," Kyle said.

Rams hooker Mitch Souter knows how tough it will be against the Bulldogs.

"We just need to play good, hard footy. It's going to be a grudge match, it's going to be a hard game. We've just got to turn up for each other all day," Souter said.

No team has scored more points than Goulburn in 2019. Only the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have conceded fewer points. But based on points scored and conceded per match, the Bulldogs have the best attacking and defensive record in the competition. The three Cornish brothers are now back together in key spine positions. They're playing like a well oiled machine. The Rams' form has been mixed... and this week they're on the road. It's impossible to tip anything but a Bulldogs victory in this one.

If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Bulldogs 8 and 4 (2nd, +226)
Rams 7 and 5 (5th, +21)

Form: Bulldogs WLLWW
Rams LWWLL

Attacking record: Bulldogs 38, Rams 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 19, Rams 21 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 3: Goulburn Bulldogs 44 defeated Woden Valley Rams 24 at Phillip

2018 Rd 17: Woden Valley Rams 38 defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 14 at Goulburn
2018 Rd 8: Woden Valley Rams 48 defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 22 at Phillip

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The sixth placed West Belconnen Warriors host the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Kippax on Sunday. The Warriors were defeated big time by the Bulldogs last week, and they're now not far from the Last Chance Saloon. If West Belconnen loses this game, they'll really start to lose touch with the top four. They are currently three competition points adrift of the Kangaroos. The Kangaroos will be fresh, coming off a bye.

The Kangaroos, on a three game winning streak, have to be favoured. But that doesn't account for the home ground advantage for Warriors - and their desperation factor. Let's also not forget, the Warriors have some good play makers, in Bobby Roberts, Brent Crisp and Ryan McQueen. They can dictate matches, as they recently showed against the Bushrangers. Remarkably, the Warriors have won the past three clashes between the clubs - by two points, every time. Can they do it again? I somehow have my doubts - and I'll go with the Roos on the road.

Season record: Warriors 5 and 6 (6th, +22)
Kangaroos 5 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +87)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Teenage Raiders recruit Josh Allan gives the Gungahlin Bulls a winning boost

A teenage Canberra Raiders recruit Josh Allan helped lift the Gungahlin Bulls to just their third win of the season in his first grade debut on Saturday. The Bulls won 34-6 to go four points clear of the last-placed Magpies.

"Josh Allan was good in his first game for the club, he's only 18 years old. He played really well given we didn't know what to expect," coach David Howell said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Wrap

Image

The top four teams tightened the grip on their positions in Round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. On Saturday, the top two teams, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and Goulburn Bulldogs, both produced big wins - while on Sunday, the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos were never seriously troubled by the West Belconnen Warriors. The third placed Queanbeyan Blues - on the bye this week - simply sat back and collected two competition points.

The defending premiers, the Woden Valley Rams, are now three competition points adrift of the Roos, after their 49-6 loss to Bulldogs at Goulburn.

With the three Cornish brothers now back together - and James Aubusson at hooker - the Bulldogs possibly now have the best "spine" in the competition.

Mitch and Nick Cornish were in the thick of things in the first Bulldogs try, with halfback Nick backing up to get the four pointer in the 11th minute. Nick then set up the next try for Tyson Greenwood, throwing the perfect pass for the big prop and putting him into a gap in the 19th minute.

The big-bodied Dillon Rota followed up with a double in the space of five minutes - causing havoc when he was running wide. And with three minutes to the break, it was Cornish to Cornish to Cornish - and winger Pat Cooke took advantage of the biggest overlap you'll ever see. As the half time siren sounded, Mitch Cornish dropped a field goal and the home team went to the break with a 27-0 lead.

Seven minutes into the second half, Mitch Cornish set second rower Iziah Tittor on a damaging run, and he then backed up to score a try. Haydon Hodge was soon the next in the procession, crashing over from dummy half, one metre from the line. The try of the match came in the 59th minute, with Nick and Tyler Cornish setting a stunning attacking move in motion, with Pat Cooke getting his second four pointer in the corner. It gave the Bulldogs a 43-0 lead.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs lost two players to the sin bin in quick succession - and almost immediately, hooker Mitch Souter darted out of dummy half to get the first try of the afternoon for the Rams. It would prove to be their only try. With only a couple of minutes left in the match, Nick Cornish produced a great chip to the corner for his winger - and Pat Cooke had his hat trick. Chris Hart converted just before the siren sounded, delivering the comprehensive 49-6 scoreline.

At Greenway, the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers produced a 44-18 win over the Belconnen United Sharks. The Bushies led by just 14-6 at half time, but were too strong in the second half. Five eighth Wez Alexander, winger Connor Massen and centre Nathan Smith all scored doubles.

In the "Spoon Bowl" at Gungahlin, the home team was far too strong for the Yass Magpies, running out 34-6 victors. Canberra Raiders recruit, Josh Allan, an 18 year old forward, received a rap from Bulls coach David Howell.

"Josh Allan was good in his first game for the club, he's only 18 years old. He played really well given we didn't know what to expect. But our whole forward pack stood up this week," Howell told The Canberra Times after the game.

On Sunday at Kippax, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos cruised to a 32-26 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors. The scoreline may look close, but the result was never really in doubt. The Kangaroos started on fire, with second rower Nukurua Ngere making an easy run up the middle to score the first try for the Queanbeyan outfit in just the second minute. They scored twice more in the opening 10 minutes, and led 14-0 in a flash.

The Warriors fought back in the 16th minute, with a try to winger Beau McFarlane out wide. That halted the Kangaroos' momentum, but they were back on the score board in the 32nd minute, when Ngere ran wide, passing to winger Fonua Tonga for a try in the corner.

The Kangaroos took a 20-6 lead to the half time break - and quickly built on that six minutes into the second half, when live wire half Lachie Ingram crossed. Four minutes later, the Warriors reduced their deficit to 14, with a simple try from hooker Joe Roberts, who crashed over from dummy half.

In the 55th minute, the Warriors let a Kangaroos bomb bounce - and it took an awkward turn, landing in the in goal. The Warriors were simply unable to control it, and Queanbeyan five eighth Tre Williams chased and planted it. The visitors were well in control, leading 32-12.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Warriors centre Brandon Withers scored a wonderful long range try, with the Roos chasers only catching him as he crossed the line. West Belconnen trailed by 16, but they could not add to their score until the final five minutes. Warriors winger Andrew McDonald bagged his second with three minutes remaining - and Bobby Roberts scored in the final seconds under the posts, after a getting a one on one steal from Roos fullback Bryan Cronan.

The loss leaves the West Belconnen Warriors five competition points away from that top four - and that is going be very difficult for the Warriors to make up, with just four rounds remaining.

Next week, the Queanbeyan derby at Freebody Oval shapes as the match of the round. Third versus fourth. It should be great!

Canberra Raiders Cup: Slow starts a barrier to West Belconnen Warriors' finals hopes

The West Belconnen Warriors gave up three tries in the opening 10 minutes in a 32-26 loss to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Kippax on Sunday, putting their finals hopes in a precarious position.

"Now we've got to rely on other people's results. We needed to win today and we needed to win our last four games and we probably would've been assured of making the finals," Warriors coach Adam Peters said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

There are just four rounds remaining in the regular season of the Canberra Raiders Cup and - and, if it hasn't already, time is running out for the teams outside the top four to force their way back into finals contention.

The Queanbeyan derby - between the third placed Blues and fourth placed Kangaroos - at Freebody Oval shapes as the match of the round - while the defending premiers, the Woden Valley Rams, and the West Belconnen Warriors will contest "must win" matches.

West Belconnen Warriors V Gungahlin Bulls

The sixth placed West Belconnen Warriors are in the Last Chance Saloon well and truly. They are now five competition points adrift of the top four and have to depend on other teams going on a losing streak to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Warriors suffered a home, 32-26, loss to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in their last outing. The score may look close, but the result was never really in doubt. The Kangaroos skipped out to a 14-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes, and led 32-12 at the 60th minute mark. The Warriors scored shortly after, a great long range try to centre Brandon Withers. However, with less than five minutes remaining, they trailed by 16 - and the two tries they scored in the final three minutes were just some small consolation.

In their last match, the Gungahlin Bulls were far too strong for the Yass Magpies, running out 34-6 victors in a clash between eighth and ninth. Canberra Raiders recruit, Josh Allan, an 18 year old forward, received a special rap from Bulls coach David Howell. But he was happy with the performance of all his forwards.

"Josh Allan was good in his first game for the club, he's only 18 years old. He played really well given we didn't know what to expect. But our whole forward pack stood up this week," Howell told The Canberra Times after the game.

The Bulls have had another season stricken by injury - but the win meant that they broke a six game losing streak and have likely avoided the 2019 wooden spoon. The Warriors are now on a three game losing streak, but they'll be desperate on Saturday. They should be too strong for the Bulls at home in this one.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues

There is always something special about the Queanbeyan derby.

The Queanbeyan Blues and the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have been the two powerhouse teams of the competition over the past decade, with at least one team contesting the Grand Final in eight of the past 10 years - and facing each other three times.

Between them, they collected the premiership six times over the decade.

2018 was the only recent Grand Final that was missing them both. The Kangaroos made the finals last season, but made a week one exit, while the Blues finished outside the top four.

Now they are both in line to contest the 2019 finals - and both teams are in striking distance of a top two finish.

The match-up between the two clubs earlier this season produced an extraordinary 28-28 draw. The Blues looked like they were well in control, leading 28-12 with 20 minutes remaining. But the Kangaroos, led by young half Lachlan Cooper, scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes to level the scoreline - and then neither side could manage the tie breaker in the final stages.

Now the stage shifts to Freebody Oval. Both teams are in very good form, winning four of their past five games.

The Kangaroos are on a four game winning streak, and have won six of their past seven matches - losing only to the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers (28-16). They cruised to victory last week over the West Belconnen Warriors in their last outing. Coach Aaron Gorrell believes he may now have found the right combinations, after losing Lachlan Cooper to the Queensland Cup and shifting hooker Lachie Ingram to the halves.

"We had a lot of blokes that hadn't played a lot of footy together and our combinations were never going to happen straight away," he told The Canberra Times. "I think we've probably found the right combinations that work for us."

The Blues are coming off the bye, and have been defeated once in their past six games. They drew against the Bushrangers in Round 8 (34-34) - but were sensationally defeated by the last placed Yass Magpies (36-32) in Round 12.

This should be a great clash. The Blues' season record is slightly better, and they have the better attack, ranking second to the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Roos have the better defence, but both teams are in the top three for fewest points conceded. This will be close, but the Kangaroos are very difficult to beat on their home turf. We'll tip a win for the Roos.

Season record: Kangaroos 7 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +93)
Blues 7 and 3, 2 draws (3rd, +138)

Form: Kangaroos LWWWW
Blues WWWLW

Attacking record: Kangaroos 28, Blues 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 20, Blues 22 points conceded per match

Yass Magpies V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Yass Magpies celebrate their 100 years this Saturday at Walker Park. They are the oldest surviving club in the Canberra district - and while they haven't always participated in the top grade, they have a proud history.

The different grades will be wearing jerseys from different eras from Magpies history - prior to a "100 years dinner" on Saturday night.

It hasn't been the best of years for Yass on field - having recorded just two wins - and they come up against the Goulburn Bulldogs outfit that is flying high.

The Bulldogs are ranked first in the competition in both attack and defence. Last weekend, they absolutely demolished the Woden Valley Rams, 49-6, at Goulburn. The three Cornish brothers are back together in the critical play making roles, and along with Jame Aubusson at hooker, they probably form the best "spine" in the Canberra Raiders Cup. Halves Mitch and Nick Cornish now have 22 tries between them, while Goulburn winger Steven Cummins is the top try scorer in the competition.

The Magpies rank last in attack, and only the Bulls have conceded more points this season. They have won once in their last 10 matches - one of the upsets of the year against the Blues in Round 12. It would be an even bigger upset if Yass were to beat Goulburn - but the emotion of the day will definitely help to lift them. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Magpies 2 and 11 (9th, -243)
Bulldogs 9 and 4 (2nd, +269)

Attacking record: Magpies 14, Bulldogs 38 points scored per match

2018 Rd 18: Yass Magpies 28 defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 22 at Walker Park
2018 Rd 9: Yass Magpies 50 defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 24 at Goulburn Arena

Woden Valley Rams V Belconnen United Sharks

The fifth placed Rams host the seventh placed Sharks on Sunday afternoon - in what is a "must win" for the home team. The defending premiers have had a mixed season - and are now three competition points away from the fourth placed Roos, after their big defeat in Goulburn last week.

The Rams have a bye in hand, but they will likely have to win all of their remaining matches - against the Sharks, Blues and Warriors - if they're to be a chance of forcing their way back into the top four.

The Sharks are out of finals contention, but with four wins, they have had a better year than many would have expected. They were last year's cellar dwellers - and have spent a long time in the doldrums. When they defeated the Yass Magpies in Round 6 earlier this year, they broke a losing streak that had lasted almost two years. They've now have something to work with in 2020, and will be aiming to finish the season as strongly as they can.

Both of these have won two of their last five games. There is not much between the teams in attack, but the Rams have the better defensive record. The Rams should take the competition points from this match, but it won't be a complete surprise if the Sharks can jag a win.

Season record: Rams 7 and 6 (5th, -22)
Sharks 4 and 8 (7th, -95)

Form: Rams WWLLL

Attacking record: Rams 22, Sharks 21 points scored per match
