Very clear sign, and looks like Oldfield will cover Cotric.

MATCH REPORT: Mounties suffer 34-20 loss to Newtown Jets

The Newtown Jets' mid-season revival continued to gather momentum this afternoon at Aubrey Keech Reserve, accounting for second-placed Mounties 34-20. The Jets took full advantage of their territorial and possession advantage to set up the win, with a four-try performance allowing the Jets to put the game all but beyond doubt at halftime, leading 22-4.

The loss for Mounties meant they were unable to take advantage of Penrith’s loss against South Sydney and take back top spot on the ladder.

Great move from the club again in resting Oldfield. Skips any chance of injury in a pretty meaningless game. He’s a tier above Kris so it’s important to have him in for Cotric while he’s out imo.

Last match: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties suffered their fourth loss of the season in Round 14 - a 34-20 defeat at the hands of the Newtown Jets at Aubrey Keech Reserve. The Jets scored four tries in the first half, taking a 24-4 lead to the break - and when Jets winger Sione Katoa scored in the 41st minute, his second of the afternoon, the result was pretty much determined.

Sam Duggan scored the sole try for Mounties in the 17th minute - and while Mounties scored three in the second half, the Jets were always in control. Royce Hunt scored in the 51st minute, with Tony Satini following up in the 62nd... but the Jets still held a 14 point advantage as the match entered the final quarter. Jets hooker Billy Magoulias put the result beyond any doubt when he crossed under the posts, with just over 10 minutes remaining. Raiders Under 20s lock Darby Medlyn scored a consolation try for Mounties in the 78th minute, putting some respectability back into the score line.

The match statistics don't really reflect the Jets' control of the scoreboard. Newtown had the advantage in possession and territory at stages during the first half, but that evened out. The Jets finished with 51 per cent share of possession, off the back of a slightly better completion rate than Mounties (85-81 per cent). Newtown made slightly more running metres (1454-1400) from fewer runs (148-152) than Mounties, with post contact metres just about level (around 445 metres). But defence was where Mounties lost the match. The Jets made more line breaks (8-5) and tackle breaks (30-24). Mounties missed more tackles (30-25) and produced one more ineffective tackle (20-19).

Royce Hunt (one try, 12 runs for 126 metres, 38 post contact metres, one line break, six tackle breaks, four offloads, 27 tackles), Reuben Porter (13 runs for 117 metres, 36 post contact metres, one tackle break, 33 tackles) and Jack Murchie (14 runs for 129 metres, 43 post contact metres, two tackle breaks, 16 tackles) were the strongest in the forwards. Tom Starling (six runs for 80 metres, one line break, one line break assist, one try assist, three tackle breaks, 24 tackles) and Brendan O'Hagan (five runs for 45 metres, one line break assist, one try assist, three tackle breaks, eight dummies, one forced line drop out) were busy amongst the play makers. It was not a great day for the backs, with only Eddie Aiono breaking 100 metres gained (120 metres from 13 runs).

Murchie (129), Hunt (126) and Aiono (120) topped the metres gained for Mounties, while Porter (33), Hunt (27) and Vincent Rennie (26) topped the tackle count.

This week: Mounties had the opportunity to take back the competition lead after the Penrith Panthers were defeated in Round 14 - but the loss to the Jets saw them remain in second place on the competition ladder instead. They're second only on the basis of points differential, after the Bulldogs joined them on 17 competition points. The Dragons and Rabbitohs are also biting at their heels, just one competition point adrift.

Mounties now face the ninth placed Wentworthville Magpies - the feeder team for the Parramatta Eels - at Ringrose Park. It is part of two match program, with the Jersey Flegg Raiders facing the Eels in warm up match.

The Magpies are on a three game losing streak, losing to the New Zealand Warriors 26-16 at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland in their last outing. They have also suffered recent losses to the Rabbitohs (20-14) and Jets (22-10) - but won against the ladder leading Panthers (20-12) in Round 11.

The Magpies have recorded five wins and eight losses this season - and lost to Mounties, 32-16, in their earlier meeting this year at Canberra Stadium. Mounties have won eight, drawn one, and lost four this season. Mounties are top attacking team in the competition, but now rank 10th in defence. They have averaged 30 points per match (Magpies 20) and conceded an average 22 points per match (Magpies 21). In their past five games, Mounties have conceded an average 28 points per game - giving up over 50 points to the Bulldogs and over 30 to the Jets.

Form: Mounties: WLLWL
Wentworthville Magpies: LWLLL

Recent meetings:
2019 Round 5 - Mounties 32 defeated Wentworthville Magpies 16 at Canberra Stadium
2018 Round 23 - Wentworthville Magpies 22 defeated Mounties 16 at Ringrose Park
2018 Round 11 - Mounties 34 defeated Wentworthville Magpies 24 at Henson Park

Head to head: Mounties 7, Wentworthville Magpies 3, 1 draw

Mounties team changes: Mounties have made some significant changes in the backline. Michael Oldfield returns at fullback, replacing Eddie Aiono, with the Raiders Under 20s centres, Harley Smith Shields and Matt Timoko promoted to NSW Cup. Regular centre Reubenn Rennie is out of the team, while his partner Seb Kris has been elevated to the Raiders' team to cover the loss of Nick Cotric to injury. Tom Starling will start at hooker, replacing Sam Duggan who has been omitted from the squad. Starling is not required by the Raiders, with the return of Josh Hodgson from injury. Steve Tavita replaces Reuben Porter at lock, while Daniel Roberts comes in on the bench.

Our tip: Mounties have been significantly disrupted in the past month or more, as injury and suspension for the Raiders flow on to the Mt Pritchard outfit - and they've struggled as a result. The Raiders' injury list should dwindle further this week, so Mounties should get some boost to their playing stocks. On paper, this is a match Mounties should win - but matches aren't played on paper. The Magpies will be a tough opponent, as they proved to be against the Panthers. Mounties will need to improve their defence if they're to take this contest - but if they do, they should have the fire power to win.

MATCH REPORT: Wentworthville Magpies produce huge comeback against Mounties

The Wentworthville Magpies finish Round 15 just one point out of the top eight after recording a sterling come-from-behind 38-34 win over fellow western Sydney rivals Mounties at Ringrose Park. Mounties weren’t helped by the loss of Royce Hunt and JJ Collins, while Wentworthville were able to field the likes of Bevan French, Will Smith, Tim Mannah and Daniel Alvaro.

Preview

Last match: The Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties suffered their second loss in a row in Round 15 - a 38-34 defeat at the hands of the ninth Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park. Mounties led 20-6 at one stage in the first half and 26-12 early in the second half. But they then conceded five tries in the second half, losing the lead with 10 minutes remaining. A try to Matthew Timoko in the final minute brought the scores closer, but by that stage it was a consolation try.

Royce Hunt and JJ Collins dropped out of the Mounties team late, while Wentworthville had the likes of Bevan French, Will Smith, Tim Mannah and Daniel Alvaro available. However, Mounties coach Peter Marrapodi will be disappointed that his team gave up what was potentially a match winning lead.

Both teams made their share of errors (Mounties 10, Magpies 9) and completion rates were low (Mounties 70 per cent, Magpies 68 per cent). But the Magpies had a 57 per cent share of possession - and produced more runs (153-116), running metres (1438-1137), post contact metres (483-364), line breaks (7-3), tackle breaks (34-28) and offloads (7-3). Mounties had to make many more tackles (287-235) - and missed more (34-28) and produced more ineffective tackles (13-4).

The Raiders Under 20s centres, Harley Smith Shields (two tries, eight runs for 134 metres, one line break, five tackle breaks) and Matthew Timoko (one try, two line breaks, five tackle breaks) stood out in the backs. Steve Tavita (14 runs for 149 metres, 56 post contact metres, three tackle breaks), Jack Murchie (11 runs for 119 metres, 53 post contact metres, three tackle breaks) and Dan Keir (12 runs for 81 metres, 47 tackles) were amongst the best forwards. Tom Starling and Brendan O'Hagan were also busy.

Tavita (149), Smith Shields (134) and Murchie (119) topped the metres gained for Mounties, while Keir (47), Starling (36) and Jarrett Boland (32) topped the tackle count.

This week: Mounties have dropped from second to fifth on the ladder - but they are only two competition points away from the new ladder leaders, the Bulldogs. This week they face the third placed South Sydney Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval - and this is a chance for the Mt Pritchard outfit to jump over them and back into the top four. Mounties are just one competition point adrift of the Dragons, Rabbitohs and Panthers.

The Rabbitohs are on a four game winning streak, while Mounties have now lost four of their past five matches. The Rabbitohs had a good 34-16 victory over the Western Suburbs Magpies last Sunday - and have had recent wins over the Panthers (36-16), Knights (26-6) and Wentworthville Magpies (20-14). Mounties are still the top attacking team in the competition, but they have been giving up way too many points in recent weeks. The Rabbitohs are second only to the Panthers in defence.

Season record: Mounties 8 and 5, 1 draw (5th, +84)
South Sydney Rabbitohs 9 and 5 (3rd, +58)

Attack: Mounties 30 points, Rabbitohs 24 points scored per match
Mounties rank 1st, Rabbitohs 5th

Defence: Mounties 24 points, Rabbitohs 19 points conceded per match
Mounties rank 10th, Rabbitohs 2nd

Form: Mounties: LLWLL
South Sydney Rabbitohs: LWWWW

Recent meeting:
2019 Round 10 - Mounties 32 defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs at Panthers Stadium

Head to head: Mounties 1, South Sydney Rabbitohs 0

Mounties team changes: Emre Guler and JJ Collins will be starting props, with Vincent Rennie and Willie Mataka dropping back to the bench. Steve Tavita replaces Dan Keir at staring prop, with Keir on the interchange bench. Darby Medlyn is on Under 20s Origin duty, while Duwanye Marriner drops out of the squad.

Our tip: Mounties have been significantly disrupted in the past month or more - with injuries and suspension impacting the availability of Raiders players. The Raiders' injury situation is improving - but Mounties continue to be affected by the unavailability of the likes of Ata Hingano, Luke Bateman and Brad Abbey. Mounties will want to turn things around in this match, but it is going to be very difficult, given the Rabbitohs' good recent form. Mounties won the earlier contest between the clubs this year. But on form, we'd have to tip South Sydney on their home turf. Hopefully the men in yellow and black can prove that prediction wrong.

Really thought Horsburgh would have been playing this. Has barely played in weeks. Could do with a 50min hit out to blow the cobwebs out. Unless he's aggravated that elbow injury.

Some ins for Mounties that make them a lot stronger, and some key outs for the Rabbitohs. Looks like the Raiders are definitely expecting Nick Cotric will be fit for the Dragons. Don't think they'd play Kris otherwise.

6th min TRY RABBITOHS to winger Jaxon Paulo. Adam Doueihi put up a mid field bomb, Oldfield leaves it, it hit Paulo's knee, and it rebounds and he scores a simple try. Converted.

Sam Williams kick is out on the full, clearly. Disappointing end to the set for Mounties. Rabbitohs attack... Try to Hiroti in the corner disallowed, final pass was forward.

18th min TRY MOUNTIES to Sebastian Kris in the corner. Andre Niko misses the conversion from the sideline.

Rabbitohs 6
Mounties 4

Rabbitohs strip the ball after kick off... there's a penalty to Mounties and there's a bit of a dust up.

23rd min Satini makes a break, kicks, the Rabbitohs can't handle it... try scoring chance, but Horsburgh is ruled off side.

Rabbitohs take it to the other end in one set, and they now force a line drop out on Mounties. O'Hagan forced to take it dead.

26th min TRY RABBITOHS to Jayden Su'A under the posts, set up by Adam Doueihi. It's off the back of the line drop out. Easy conversion.
