Canberra Raiders V Parramatta Eels
Saturday 29 June 7:35pm
Marrara Oval
Gates open: 5:30pm
Tickets: Click here
TV coverage: Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, Mix 106.3
Weather: Sunny. The chance of morning fog. Sunny afternoon. Light winds becoming east to southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the morning then becoming light in the middle of the day. Chance of any rain: 0 per cent. Min 18 Max 32

Round 14 2019. Canberra Raiders 22 - Cronulla Sharks 20. This was a match that the Raiders of 2018 probably would have lost. The Raiders raced to a 20-0 lead after 25 minutes, scoring three tries... before conceding four and 20 points in the space of 25 minutes. The main positive for the Green Machine was that they took back the lead, through a penalty goal, and defended it for the final quarter of the game. That would not have happened in 2018.

More on Round 14: As I saw it

In Round 15, the Canberra Raiders are back are back on the "road" and head to Darwin for a match up with the Parramatta Eels. For the Raiders Josh Hodgson and Corey Horsburgh return from injury, with Hodgson starting at hooker and Horsburgh on the bench. With Hodgson's inclusion, Siliva Havili drops to the bench, while Tom Starling drops back to NSW Cup. Sebastian Kris has been named at centre in place of the injured Nick Cotric, while Michael Oldfield is on the extended bench.

For the Eels, Dylan Brown returns from injury at five eighth to partner Mitch Moses in the halves. Brad Takairangi has been named at centre, with Michael Jennings (knee) on the injured list. Jaeman Salmon moves to the interchange bench.

Late changes: JJ Collins replaced Emre Guler in the Raiders squad of 21 on the extended bench, due to illness on Thursday. On Friday night, Royce Hunt and Michael Oldfield were cut from the squad. The Eels omitted Daniel Alvaro and Will Smith from their squad of 21.

Two players will drop out of the 21 man squad on Friday evening and a further two players one hour before the match. We'll have an update on Friday.

Milestones: Jarrod Croker will become the second most capped Raiders player in history in this match, overtaking Laurie Daley (244 appearances for the club). He has some way to go to match Jason Croker's record of 318 games in green. Jarrod Croker is also one try away from breaking the club's all time try scoring record - which Jarrod currently shares with Jason Croker (120 tries).

History: Canberra has won 31 of 58 games against the Parramatta Eels. The Raiders have lost just twice to the Eels since the turn of the decade - and won eight of the past 10 matches. Canberra is also on a five game winning streak against Parramatta. The teams have played at Marrara once before, in 2014, with the Eels winning 18-10. The Raiders won the Round 5 contest between the teams earlier this year, 19-0, at Canberra Stadium.

2019 Round 5: Canberra Raiders V Parramatta Eels

2018 Round 6: Canberra Raiders V Parramatta Eels

Form: Raiders: LLWWW
Eels: LLWLW

The Eels won 38-10 at Western Sydney Stadium, against a lethargic Brisbane Broncos outfit, in Parramatta's last outing. They also posted a recent win over the Rabbitohs (26-14) - but have lost to the Sharks (42-22), Panthers (16-10) and Cowboys (17-10). The Raiders are on a three game winning streak.

Betting: The Canberra Raiders are $1.63 favourites in this match, with the Eels paying $2.25. The Eels have 3.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders have firmed over the course of the week.

Stat attack: It is a battle between fourth and eighth on the ladder. The Eels have a slightly better attacking record than the Raiders, ranking fourth in the competition, the Raiders seventh. The Eels throw the ball around more than the Raiders, create more opportunities and take more risks. They rank second in the league for offloads, second for try assists and third for line break assists. The Eels also make lots of metres with the ball in hand, ranking second in the NRL.

The Raiders are playing a more controlled style in attack this season. They make fewer errors than the Eels and have the better completion rate. The risk taking Eels rank second in the league for most errors and third for most handling errors.

Canberra is also aiming to control the tempo of matches through their kicking in 2019. No team has kicked more than the Raiders in 2019 and they rank first for kicking metres. They are in the top four for forced line drop outs and rank equal first for 40/20 kicks. That's a huge turnaround from 2018, when the Raiders were third lowest in the NRL for kicking metres (380 per match, compared with 603 per match this year).

The Raiders have the advantage in defence. Only the Storm have conceded fewer points. The Eels rank amongst the worst four teams for points and tries conceded. They also give up more running metres than the Raiders, rank second for missed tackles and fourth for ineffective tackles.

One area where the Eels have the advantage is in discipline. No team has conceded fewer penalties than the Eels - while the Raiders rank second for most penalties conceded.

Season record: Raiders 9 and 5 (4th, +87)
Eels 7 and 7 (8th, +5)

Home and away: Raiders 5 of 7 away
Eels 5 of 7 at home, but the more relevant statistic may be 2 from 7 away

Against top eight opposition: Raiders have won 3 of 7
Eels have won 2 of 7

Attack: Raiders rank 7th, 21 points and 3.3 tries scored per match
Eels rank 4th, 22 points and 3.8 tries scored per match

Defence: Raiders rank 2nd, 14 points and 2.4 tries conceded per match
Eels rank 14th, 22 points and 3.6 tries conceded per match

Possession: Raiders 51 per cent, Eels 50 per cent

Completion rate: Raiders 79 per cent, Eels 74 per cent

Running: Raiders 1547 running metres from 171 runs, 182 kick return metres, 437 post contact metres per match
Eels 1612 running metres from 176 runs, 178 kick return metres, 441 post contact metres per match

Tackle breaks: Raiders 29, Eels 30 per match

Line breaks: Raiders 3, Eels 4 per match

Try assists: Raiders 2, Eels 3 per match

Line break assists: Raiders 2, Eels 3 per match

Offloads: Raiders 7, Eels 12 per match

Kicking: Raiders 603 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Eels 448 kicking metres from 19 kicks per match

Tackling: Raiders 329 made, 30 missed, 14 ineffective
Eels 336 made, 36 missed, 17 ineffective

Running metres conceded: Raiders 1356, Eels 1427 metres per match

Errors: Raiders 10, Eels 12 per match

Penalties: Raiders 7, Eels 6 per match

Our tip: With the Eels, life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get. One week they are completely dominant, another week, they're being completely dominated. If the Eels turn up and play their best football, they will be a real handful for the Raiders.

The Eels have a lot of strike in attack - with Mitchell Moses directing traffic and the likes of Maika Sivo and Blake Ferguson taking advantage. Sivo is the leading try scorer in the competition with 12, while Ferguson has five. Moses has the most try assists in the league, while he ranks fourth for line break assists. He has also kicked more than any player in the NRL in 2019. The Raiders will need to cut down his time as best they can and limit the opportunities for the Eels' outside backs.

We know the Raiders' defence, combined with good kicking, can put the Eels off their game - given they held the Eels scoreless earlier this year. But Canberra will need to bring their most intense defensive effort and get on top of the Eels pack, featuring former Raider Junior Paulo. If they can do that, it should open up opportunity for the Raiders own attacking weapons - like Jack Wighton and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad. The return of Josh Hodgson won't hurt either. I think the Green Machine can do it. Raiders by eight.

What they're saying:

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad on the Eels: "I'm expecting a really high energy team, they had a few players in rep round and they'll be bringing that enthusiasm back to their squad. We'll look back at that game [against the Eels in Round 5] and learn from some of the positives. But I was looking back at that game from about 10 weeks ago and they're a totally different side and so are we."

That’s a stronger looking lineup this week. Nice to see Hodgo and Hors back. Hopefully we get a good result here.

Hopefully the returning players add some energy and freshen things up. Hors will need to watch his errors with the soapy ball in the humidity and it will be interesting to see how Hodgo adds to our attack or ability to restrict metres. I suspect Paulo will go straight at him all day.

About as close to full-strength as we will be this season (minus cotric). The only thing is the humidity and perhaps a couple of our players might be a bit underdone due to return from recent injury status.

Playing against a borderline top 8 team - im voting 13+.

West Tigers have just helped our cause by beating South Sydney. Now if the Storm can beat the Chooks and we win by 5 or more we will have 2nd place in the comp. That would be a wonderful place to be heading into the bye round.

The last time we had a chance for a top position we blew it. Just focus on the task at hand and let the ladder worry about itself!

As GE said pickles, it's up to us now. Nothing wrong with the fans looking at different scenarios prior to the match, as long as the players are focused. By the way, with the airline problems, has the playing squad reached Darwin?

Thanks GE. Smart move to have a training run in similar weather conditions/time to match day. The Storm have now done their bit by beating the Chooks. As you said, it's up to us now. Second place on the ladder beckons. Go Raiders! :cmon

Game day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am really excited for this? Maybe I've just been Raider-deprived?

Anyway, if Croker scores 8 points today he becomes the youngest player ever to reach 1900 points. If he scores one try he also becomes the highest tryscorer ever for the Raiders. So I vote we combine these two milestones and he scores two tries.

My only concern for this game is Kris being selected over Oldfield. Kris was good against the Bulldogs but let’s face it that was a reserve grade side.

Oldfield is a more than solid performer. Was great last year.

Also an acceptable combination.

Or we could score four tries and he saves the tryscorer milestone for our next game.
