The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team is back in the nation's capital in Round 14, hosting the first placed Cronulla Sharks at Kippax on Sunday.

Last week: The Raiders stumbled in Round 13, losing to the 10th played Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday. Not a lot went right for the Green Machine. The Tigers had a lot of possession and territory in the first half, but Canberra's good defence contained the home team to just one try to centre Zac Cini in the 26th minute. The Raiders had opportunities to score, but spilled the ball over the try line on at least three occasions. The Tigers took a 6-0 lead to the break, and then scored three unanswered tries in the second half. Zac Cini bagged his second try of the day three minutes from full time, securing a 22-0 victory. Canberra's ill discipline cost them, with centre Matt Timoko sin binned for a ruck infringement on the Raiders' own goal line.

This week: It certainly won't be any easier on Sunday, when the Raiders meet the ladder leading Sharks. The Sharks have lost just one game all season, winning eight. That sole loss came against the Penrith Panthers, a 50-10 drubbing at Shark Park. But in every other week, the Sharks have been either handing out their own drubbings, or winning the close contests. They are now on a five game winning streak, and only the Warriors have come close in that time - with the New Zealand outfit losing 18-16 at Henson Park in Round 12. In their last outing, the Sharks ran out 34-10 victors over the Parramatta Eels at Shark Park.

The Raiders have posted six wins, a draw and three losses so far this season. They have won four of their last five, but have now fallen from third on the ladder to fifth. After being held scoreless in Round 13, the Raiders now rank third in the league in attack - behind the Newcastle Knights and the Penrith Panthers. They have averaged 30 points scored per match, compared with 29 for the Sharks (ranked fourth). The Raiders rank sixth in defence, having conceded an average of 17 points per game. And that's where the Sharks have the advantage - they are the number one defensive team and have conceded just 13 points per game on average.

Form: : Raiders: WWWWL
Cronulla Sharks: WWWWW

Raiders team changes: The Raiders have named an unchanged team to the one that was defeated last week by the Tigers.

Our tip: Until their loss to the Tigers, the Raiders have been rolling along nicely. They'll be aiming to return to the form they showed in the previous four weeks. However, it'll be tough to turn it around against the Sharks, despite having the home ground advantage. On form, we have to tip a Sharks win... but let's hope the Raiders can prove that wrong.

Round 13 Jersey Flegg highlights: To come.

Kyle Shepherdson speaks out on importance of mental health after quitting NRL program

Tathra rugby league prodigy Kyle Shepherdson has shone a much-needed light on mental health in sport. Twice selected for NRL team programs, Mr Shepherdson recently made the tough choice to walk away from the opportunity for the sake of his mental health. Recently and just six months into a new development deal with the Canberra Raiders, Mr Shepherdson said he started to relive some familiar feelings.

"One week in, I thought it's happening again, I instantly had these self-worth feelings come back," he said.

Good on him. Your life is long well after football. The mental pressure these kids go through to “make it” is insane and i am surprised there are not more publicised stories similar to this.

Overcast, cloudy conditions for today’s match, presently 12.5C, apparent temperature is 10C. So pretty cool, and probably a bit greasy on the field. Teams will warm up on field today, which is a little unusual for Kippax... but this is a single match program.

13 to go TRY SHARKS to Monty Raper, again off the back of a penalty... a pretty tough one. He’s a talent, Raper, big free running forward, hard to stop. Subloo injured after he collides with the post trying to stop the try... looks like he’ll be OK. Converted Jonaiah Lualua.

The Sharks wasted much of the final minute, by a slow restart, and the Raiders has a play or two left, but couldn’t get out of their own end. Very good showing against the No. 1 team on the ladder.

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team is back on the road in Round 15, and head to Redfern Oval for a meeting with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Last week: The Raiders produced a very good performance - but lost by a point to the ladder leading Cronulla Sharks at Kippax on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders significantly reshuffled their forward line up, with Tyson Hodge, Lazarus Vaalepu, Matthew Dragisic and hooker Kyle Patterson late inclusions in the starting pack - while Semi Valemi was a late inclusion on the wing. The shake-up seemed to produce much more energy than was on display in the loss to Wests Tigers in Round 13.

The Sharks went to an early lead when they swept the ball wide, with centre Vito Tevaga crossing in the scoreboard corner. The impressive conversion from the sideline from fullback Jonaiah Lualua produced a 6-0 scoreline inside the first five minutes. The Raiders levelled in the 13th minute, after Harley Smith Shield stepped and jinked his way over the try line. But the Sharks were quickly back in front, after a barnstorming run from prop Monty Raper up the middle saw him score under the posts.

In the 23rd minute, Semi Valemi made a great run down the sideline - his try in the corner keeping the Raiders right in the contest. The direction of Toby Westcott's conversion attempt was perfect, but the ball dropped short of the posts. The Sharks immediately put themselves under pressure from the restart, penalised for being offside at the kick off. That led to another penalty to the Raiders, right in front of the posts, after the Sharks were caught offside in the red zone. Westcott potted the easy goal, and the scores were level, 12-12, with eight minutes to the break. It looked like that would be the half time score - but Sharks half Kai Broadhurst kicked a field goal just before the siren, the ball sailing through despite the Raiders' touch on it in flight. The field goal would ultimately prove to be critical to the result.

In the second half, the Raiders created some good opportunities, but the Sharks converted theirs into tries - to Isaac Longmuir in the 45th minute, and then to Monty Raper in the 57th. The Sharks took a 25-12 lead, but the Raiders finished strongly. Centre Matt Timoko, who was probably the Raiders man of the match, stepped his way over the line, scoring under the posts with 11 minutes remaining. And then with one minute left on the clock, second rower Kai O'Donnell scored - with the Westcott goal bringing the Raiders within one point. The Sharks were slow to restart, and eventually the clock was stopped - but the Raiders only had time for a couple of plays at their own end. Time ran out.

This week: The loss to the Sharks saw the Raiders fall to sixth on the ladder, and they now meet the fifth placed Rabbitohs. The Rabbitohs have won six, drawn two and lost three matches this season. They won by just a point over the Penrith Panthers in their last outing, 23-22. The Panthers led by 18-4 at half time, but the Rabbitohs came back in the second half. The scores were level for the final 10 minutes, but a field goal to halfback Lachlan Ilias with six seconds remaining saw the Rabbitohs run out last gasp winners. They have had recent losses to the Knights (28-16) and Eels (31-18).

The Raiders have a six and four record, with one draw - and are just one competition point adrift of the Rabbitohs. Four wins in a row saw Canberra climb to third place on the ladder, but the Raiders have now lost their past two games. The Raiders rank third in the league in attack - behind the Newcastle Knights and the Penrith Panthers. They have averaged 29 points scored per match, compared with 28 for the Rabbitohs (ranked fourth). The Raiders rank sixth in defence, having conceded an average of 17 points per game, compared with 23 for the Rabbitohs.

Form: Raiders: WWWLL
Rabbitohs: WWLLW

Raiders team changes: Duwanye Mariner returns to the team at starting prop and will be partnered by Charlie Rorke, who moves back to the front row from lock. Props Tyson Hodge and Lazarus Vaalepu drop back to the bench. Matthew Dragisic retains his position in the second row, while Darby Medlyn returns to the team at lock, after playing in NSW Cup last week. Ata Mariota and Jacob Sturt drop out of the top 17.

Our tip: The two teams are ranked closely, but the Raiders have the slightly better record in attack, and the better record in defence. The Raiders face the Rabbitohs on foreign turf, but they have been strengthened by this week's team changes and they have the capability to win. It'll be a tough contest, but if the Raiders play anything like they did in the clash with the Sharks, they should come away with the competition points.

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team is on the road yet again in Round 16, and head to Ringrose Park for a meeting with the Parramatta Eels. It is part of a two match program, with Mounties later meeting the Wentworthville Magpies.

Last week: The Raiders fell to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, 28-12, at Crestwood Oval on Sunday = their third straight defeat. Canberra had risen to as high as third place on the competition ladder, after recording their fourth consecutive win in Round 12 - but have now tumbled to eighth.

The Rabbitohs went to a 10-0 lead after "prop" Tallis Angianga - who is a regular centre and was a late inclusion in the starting side - scored a double. The Raiders hit back with a try to Lachlan Lewis - no not that Lachlan Lewis... he's 22 - in the 24th minute in his first match for the Raiders' Jersey Flegg outfit. That reduced the Rabbitohs' lead to four points, but a try to interchange player, Lachlan Gale five minutes later gave South Sydney a 16-6 lead at the break.

It was almost a quarter hour into the second half before further points were added. But when Rabbitohs winger Jake Frasca crossed in the 49th minute, it was going to be tough for the Raiders to come back. The match was put beyond doubt when centre Jaxson Paulo scored, stretching the South Sydney lead to 20 points. The Raiders scored a consolation try through Jarrett Subloo with five minutes remaining.

This week: The Raiders now meet the 11th placed Parramatta Eels - in what is shaping as a "must win" for the Green Machine. While Canberra is safely in the top eight, with the ninth placed Warriors three competition points adrift - the Raiders need to beat teams below them on the ladder if they're to remain safe.

The Eels lost to the Victoria Thunderbolts, 26-22, at McCredie Park at Guildford Leagues last Saturday. The Eels led 16-12, after conceding the opening two tries to the Thunderbolts inside the opening 10 minutes. But the Melbourne outfit piled on three tries in the second half. The Eels scored late, through five eighth Joseph Taipari, but it was too little too late. Parramatta's recent form has been up and down, but they have recent wins over the Rabbitohs (31-18) and Warriors (32-14).

Raiders now rank fifth in the league in attack - overtaken on the weekend by the Sharks and Rabbitohs - and seventh in defence. While they are falling down the rankings, the Raiders have a clearly better record than the Eels in both attack and defence.

Season record: Raiders 6 and 5, 1 draw (8th, +106)
Eels 4 and 8 (11th, -107)

Form: Raiders: WWLLL
Eels: LWLWL

Attacking record: Raiders 28, Eels 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 19, Eels 26 points conceded per match

Raiders record away: 4 and 2
Eels record at home: 3 and 4

Raiders team changes: Lazarus Vaalepu comes in at prop for Charlie Rorke, with Jacob Sturt coming in for Vaalepu on the bench. Matthew Timoko and Darby Medlyn have been named for both Mounties and the Raiders' Under 20s, so late changes can be expected for this game, with NSW Cup duties to take precedence.

Our tip: The Raiders came close against the ladder leading Cronulla Sharks two weeks ago, but they will be wanting to halt their losing streak in this one. There are eight matches remaining in the season - and the Raiders are just three competition points adrift of the teams placed third to fifth (Knights, Panthers and Rabbitohs). So there are plenty of competition points still up for grabs and the Raiders are still in striking distance of the top four. But this is the sort of game the Raiders need to win if they're to stay in touch. They have the capability to win this one - and we'll tip them to do it.
