Raiders greatest non-premiership winning players

Post by Dr Zaius »

Quite a lot of the positions in the Raiders greatest team pick themselves really. It's a bit more of a challenge if players who have won a premiership are exempt from contention. Who would be in your greatest Raiders team ever, made up purely of players who have not won a premiership with this club. Winning a premiership with the Raiders excludes them completely, they can't be picked in a non premiership winning position (e.g. Jason Croker is out and can't be picked on the wing or halves).

Schifcofske
Hoppe
Croker
Leilua
Rapana
Campese
Carney
Papalii
Hodgson
Lomax (does he count missing the GF?)
Bateman
Whitehead
Tongue

I'm sure I have missed many worthy players.

I had a look at most of the voting threads for our 35 year dream team in coming up with this. I'm assuming that players who won premierships elsewhere can be included. It is a difficult exercise. Some are included on the basis of their peak form at the Raiders (eg Shannon Boyd), while I admit admit others might have made it on the basis of what they did later, at other clubs (eg Ben Kennedy). I nearly included Nick Cotric instead of Joel Monaghan, but Monaghan achieved more in his career than Cotric has so far... but I think Cotric may well overtake him before too long.

1. Clinton Schifcofske
2. Joel Monaghan
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Peter Jackson
5. Jordan Rapana
6. Terry Campese
7. Todd Carney
8. Sam Backo
9. Josh Hodgson
10. Shannon Boyd
11. Ben Kennedy
12. Josh Papalii
13. Alan Tongue

14. Simon Woolford
15. David Shillington
16. Luke Davico
17. Tom Learoyd Lahrs

Can I have Scott Logan on the bench in place of Lodge BnM? I'll also go for Luke Priddis in place of Josh Hodgson. Priddis a two time premiership winner with other Clubs. Extremely under-rated in green imo.

Priddis played mostly off the bench for us. You couldnt put him in on merit.

Also Matt Lodge?

Wighton would be in for Carney or Croker now he is an Origin rep I'd think. I'd also have BJ right up there with Croker.

I think that you have to choose in terms of what they achieved while a Raider. Priddo was awesome, but didn't achieve a lot in green.

Do people think that their team could reasonably win a premiership? Not one out of the box like the Tigpies one, but hit the season as favorite, finish top 2 and win a grand final to no-one's surprise type premie.

Oh, for sure. A peak-form spine of Schifcofske, Campo, Carney and Hodgo almost gets you there right away.

Assuming you can just cherry pick all their best football and expect them to play that way then it wouldn't be guaranteed, but they would be in the fight with the Roosters based on talent.

Good pickup on my scott logan coming out as matt lodge :/

I think Hodgo is better than Priddis but yes Priddis was definitely one that got away from us and was more valued elsewhere.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

Backo had his chance. Abandoned us for the Broncos. Ditto Jackson. No sympathy here. Or from Gary Belcher!

He played an 18 month run there (from memory) that was as good as any 18 months a #6 has ever played for us. Laurie included. Just the troops around and the longevity differed.

Back end of 2008 he was clearly in the same league as Daley and that's at Daley's peak. Arguably 2010 he was up there with a lot of Daley's football as well.

Campo's best was basically two half seasons. You don't deserve to be compared to one of the greats on that basis.

Aside from that he was bog ordinary, and this is prior to the injuries he sustained.

True when speaking about careers but if we’re discussing peak periods then fair play.

Loz was a legend and I saw nearly all his career. But Campo’s best was as good. The difference was Laurie was awesome from the get-go and maintained a very high standard his whole career. And also had the chance to demonstrate his supreme talent in big occasions. He was awesome in every aspect of footy.

But switch Loz into the 2008-10 Raiders and he wouldn’t have done much more than Campo.

No contest overall but don’t downplay Campo’s best.

My point exactly. Back end of '08 and most of '10 Campo was elite. Obviously he couldn't sustain that due to injury. Was never really in a great side either, he would've been a far better player with Stuart hb, he never really had a good halves partner.
