Past Raiders teams with most Internationals

Post by kona_dream »

With the possible arrival of George Williams, it got me thinking that the Raiders will have potentially 7 Teir 1 internationals (AUS, ENG, NZ) playing next year possibly 8 if Sutton starts getting picked. Thinking back back to the glory days I think this would have been about even with the highest.

The current players I have are: Papa, Hodgo, Tarps, Rapa, Whitehead, J Bateman, G Williams and possibly Sutton.

Hmm 94 we would have had Mullins, Meninga, Daley, Ricky, Furner, Clyde, Steve Walters and from memory lomax, pongia and Wiki represented NZ at the time too.

But that's not looking it up so happy to be corrected

I view Australia as the lone tier 1 nation with NZ and England as tier 2 nations

Australia (11 time World Cup Winners)
Great Britain (3 time World Cup Wins, most recently in 1972)
NZ (1 World Cup win in 2008... Bloody Sticky!)
England (0 time World Cup winners)
Would have won Boogs - 2016, 2017, 2018

According to Wikipedia Nadruku for Fiji and Albert Fulivai for Tonga as well in 1994. David Westley played for PNG in 1995.

All of the '94 GF team were rep level except Osborne.

And Osborne replaced Lomax, who was a kiwi international.

The best 1-13 of the 94 team were all rep players. Not too many teams before or after that could boast that, not even the best broncos teams.

Just another reminder that that 1994 Raiders side has to be the most ridiculously talented group of Rugby League players ever assembled in one club.

Here are the rep records of Raiders players: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=21854

There is a record for Raiders representatives for Origin (eight in one match in 1990), but not one for Tests. But 1989 and 1990 and 1994 are probably the most likely time for record Test representation.

I haven’t gone through every record. On the 1994 Kangaroo tour there were seven Raiders in the squad and in the first Test against Great Britain (Mullins, Meninga, Daley, Walters, Clyde starting and Stuart and Furner on the bench). There were six in the second and third and the Test against France, all starting (Mullins, Meninga, Daley, Stuart, Walters, Clyde). On the 1990 Kangaroo tour there were Tests where the Raiders had five reps. There were Tests between Australia and NZ in 1989 where there were four (Brent Todd for NZ and three for Australia, Belcher, Meninga and Clyde).

I reckon seven is probably the record in a single match. There’s the challenge... see if we can find a Test where there were more than seven on both sides.

and we had to breach the cap then sell the club to try and keep it. If anything we are the proof it can't be done.

I think Sutton's a while off being an international - or, at least, he should be.

England has more depth in the front row than Australia at the moment (I'm waiting for the day when it's more than a couple of positions), so when you think he's be ready for the Green and Gold, he's probably not too far off England.

We could end up with 10 internationals including lower tiers, and only 1 origin player.

If you want to include lower tiers we are already there:

1) Rapana (nz)
2) Leilua (samoa)
3) Whitehead (england)
4) Bateman (england)
5) Hodgson (england)
6) Tapine (nz)
7) Lui (samoa)
8) Hingano (tonga)
9) Havili (tonga)
10) Sezer (turkey)

Papalii for origin.

Given the latest injury to Bird... **** I hope Freddy moves Mitchell to the right and puts Croker on the left.
