What you should know before your first home game

Post by cat »

What should you know before your first Raiders game?

We gave him a chance to ask rugby league writer David Polkinghorne any questions he had before the big game.

David Polkinghorne: Sooooo, you're going to your first Raiders game, I hear! Excited? Nervous? Worried you might become addicted to the greatest game of all?

Jasper Lindell: It's looking like it will be a real fish out of water situation. All I know is that there was a lime Canberra Milk era and Mal Meninga's political career came to a screeching halt in the studios of the ABC in 2001. And Ricky Stuart is the coach. But that's it.

How does a sports reporter in Canberra get a job at The Canberra Times, without ever having gone to a Raiders game, despite living here all their life?

How does a sports reporter in general know so little about one of the main sports in Australia?

What you should know before your first home game

A sports novice gets swept up in home team pride at his first Raiders game

After the introduction of television sports broadcasting in the 1950s, people started to realise it was a whole lot more comfortable to stay at home and watch sport than head to a stadium, which in those days were fairly rudimentary.

At Canberra Stadium on Sunday night, there was nothing to sanitise the experience for those people who still like to see the spectacle in the flesh and for me, the sports novice at the ground at the behest of my The Canberra Times sports department colleagues.

How are the MAFS experts considered to be relationship professionals?

These are the greatest questions of our time.

I read it as him being a CT reporter and sports novice, but when I re-read it does say he was filling a sports reporter role.

That is insane - why would the CT be so eager to promote the fact it’s reporters know nothing about the subject matter.

I’m not convinced there are any great sport analysis employed at the CTs.

Not wrong.

He's more suited to writing a review on the EB Games Facebook page.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Let's just say with a name like Jasper it's safe to say he didn't grow up in a working class environment.
