According to this site, a rugby field is 8400m2, and a pitch is typically 10080m2. So plenty of room.

But I'm not saying that they should build that exact arena, nor in my wildest dreams think that they would. I'm saying that if they look around the world and get creative, they could build something that can be used for more than just a stadium particularly if it has a roof. There is potential as a conference and exhibition facility etc.

You linked me photos of Saitama Stadium with football. Are you sure you are not confusing the Saitama Stadium with the Saitama Super Arena.

Doesn’t it answer the question that the city has a dedicated football ground, not just use the multi purpose venue to fit the both needs.

Na, that's the arena. I understand your point. Anything less than a purpose built facility is a compromise. That would certainly be my preference. The ACT Government has indicated that they are not willing to invest the type of money required unless the facility will see significant use. My point is that if that is their view, there are no doubt other options out there that they can explore.

ACT is the only government that could build stadium in this political climate

ACT chief minister Andrew Barr has shelved plans for a stadium in the city until after the 2020 budget, meaning one of Australia's worst stadiums will only grow more derelict over the next decade. Make no mistake, a Civic Stadium would transform this city.

"You go to any major city in Australia and they've all got a stadium in town now, even Townsville are getting one so we don't want to fall behind them," Raiders boss Don Furner said. "Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane - it's outstanding when you go to the footy there [Brisbane] and it would be outstanding to have a stadium there across the road [from Braddon].

It would be nice if a private equity group built it, like Etihad in Melbourne

Need something large enough to host the entire population of Canberra in the event of a tsunami, zombie apocalypse or the Raiders making a qualifying final.

Have a look at some of the stadiums the college football teams play in. Not all of them are NCAA powerhouses either.

Pretty sure a lot of those are funded by mega rich alumni. They aren't directly government funded at least.

Its just not happening. The Brumbies have 5 years left in them max, and the A league won't be coming here anyyime soon despite what they say.
The reason towns like Townsville and Newcastle get new stadiums is that there are votes up for grabs and I actually think the liberal party don't give a **** about Canberra!

I did some research. The Georgia Bulldogs, for example, built the original stadium by having members of the athletic association signing notes guaranteeing a bank loan to fund construction. Those guarantors were granted lifetime seats in return. The response was overwhelming and in 1928 a loan of $150,000 supported by fans and alumni allowed construction to begin on a stadium whose total cost was $360,000. In 2017, their Athletic Board approved a $63 million expansion to renovate the west side of the stadium.

However, the privately-owned Atlanta Falcons have managed to get the Mercedes Benz Stadium you saw photos of above under an interesting deal that sees the Georgia government impose a hotel tax, hand the money over and then keep on handing money over to cover maintenance, etc. For details, see: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/ ... fl-stadium

Meanwhile, the Oakland/Las Vegas (also use to be LA) Raiders were rebuffed by the local government when they asked for a new stadium to be built. The Nevada government stumped up the few billion needed and the Raiders are leaving again. Oakland is now suing the Raiders and the team is looking for somewhere else to play next season. One option could see them playing their home games in London.

The CDRL constitution pretty much prevents our Raiders moving and it's a worse case scenario that the Barr Government can be confident won't happen. So, we fans are screwed until after the next election assuming we don't get any more unexpected Mr Fluffy-like crap and they finally sort out this stupid light rail.

A Federal election coming up, three seats up for grabs, and a desperate LNP Government that could give its local chapter's election chances a huge boost at the same time by promising to fund a stadium and agreeing to sell GIO Stadium to the local government under a strict arrangement so it can't be sold to developers until a new stadium has been handed over.

C'mon. There must be someone on here who works for the right minister(s) that could suggest it to them in person.

In Canberra? Good one ;) Even the new seat of Bean the current margin is 8.9% to Labor... Libs could promise a mega stadium in every suburb and that seat is not changing anytime soon.

I don't know that the current ACT Govt is serious about a new stadium at this time. There are 2 codes, Rugby League and Union, which require a rectangle field in National Competition in Canberra in Winter but it is not enough. An 'A' League side to play over the Summer would assist. But I think we will be going to GIO stadium to support the Raiders for years to come.

Clearly, the ACT government is not seriously about a new stadium for Canberra. They want to support AFL, not the teams actually based in Canberra.

Clear lack of loyalty/support for local sporting organisations. FFA demand 40K seat stadiums for World Cup events although Russia had two with 35K capacities. They look for 12 stadiums in the host nation. What a shame Canberra would not be a part of such a World event. Still there is always the AFL which is played in so many countries .....

I'd love to see in one place how much has been spent on upgrades at Manuka oval since western Sydney became a suburb of Canberra.

I think the requirement is 40k before loads of seats are ripped out for the media - which those two 35k were.

The other main things that have been done is that roofs have been put over a lot of the smaller stands... which were previously uncovered... and the uncovered stands have been extended significantly as well.

I know it's not a definitive source but according to wiki ground improvements were made in 2011 of 4.3 million. I'm assuming these improvements were made to seal the GWS deal. A year or two later over 5 million was spent on the floodlights. Now 2.7 million and factoring the 23 million for the GWS deal, which is currently being reviewed/renewed - you would imagine at or above the current deal.

The floodlights were to get ODI matches, same with Hobart

CA didn't want to play just day games anymore as they didnt rate on tv.. kind of irrelevant now

The master plan is to build a stand where the temp seating is now, and increase capacity to 20k

It shouldn't grow beyond its current size. It is in the middle of a heritage and suburban area. There once was plenty of room at Phillip for a cricket and AFL venue, if they wanted to build a big stadium, right next to a commercial district... and which is right on the doorstep of a major transport interchange.

So this is what we're missing out on in the national capital. We are going to be left far behind in terms of stadium infrastructure and will be playing out of one of the worst grounds in the NRL, soon.

You're not wrong GE.

Once the Sydney stadium rebuilds are finished, along with the Cowboys new stadium and the Auckland planning to consolidate their cities stadiums with the Warriors shifting to either a re-built Eden Park or a new National Stadium, we'll probably only be above the Sharks, Dragons, Eagles and possibly Panthers for worst 'primary' stadium in the league. If the rumours about one or two Sydney clubs being forced to relocate are true, we'll be the worst stadium in the league before long - and by a fair margin at that.

The other thing is the lack of clarity on what the Federal Government intends to do with the AIS precinct. ACT Government can't buy and upgrade what isn't for sale yet.

It needs to be built in the city. Greenfield sites are a hallmark of the era of Bruce Stadium when the cost of land was the driving factor.

You build it in the sticks, you lose so much economic benefit of the stadium as the bulk of people just go home afterwards and not to bars/clubs/restaurants.
