So they were not cap compliant during 2016 season but they were compliant for the GF. :hmmm

Must have backdated their player payments or something. Like those peptide suspensions.

It’s real easy when you could retroactively frontload into 2015 and backload into 2017 and just pay fines for being over in those years, but keep a trophy in the middle. What a farce this sounds to be.

If I were the storm I’d be **** pissed off to put it mildly.

Also I was just thinking if the Raiders set up a business and use it to sponsor West Tigers players, and West Tigers set up a business and use it to sponsor Raiders players... that sounds to me like it could possibly be legal in the current system

It is now clear to me they were cheating in 2016. From Paul Kent’s comments, I’m not clear if they were under the cap because of the TPAs or whether they were under the cap even if you account for the illegal TPAs (ie they were not big enough to take them over in that year).

Cronulla Sharks salary cap fine will cost them hooker James Segeyaro

Cronulla’s salary cap fine will cost them James Segeyaro with the former Dally M hooker of the year’s contract set to be formally rejected by the NRL.

Can’t read it, but it’ll cost them the hack they tried to sign after they were over the cap? “Well duh” and “oh no?”

Im not sure how this works , they have to lose Seg for example he was on 350K , that gets them under the cap , but dont they need to have at least 29 players by round 1 so therefore they need to spend money on a replacement , even with it being minimum wage wouldn't that put them back over the cap

They’ve also decided to “recoup” $50,000 of a planned pre payment to one player. And will need to shed another player before June 30. I’m not sure how the math adds up to get them under for Round 1 though.

If they are shedding players they need to replace them , either recruit cheaper players or promote development players. Either way it is a cost

It doesn't add up.

Nobody knows. Details coming from thr NRL is (deliberately?) very ambiguous.

I think it is deliberately ambiguous. They've gone out of their way to help the Sharks, on the premise that they self reported.

They must shift $353,000 before the first game. That is $303,000 with the $50,000 "recoup" of pre payment for an unspecified player.

They had 29 players with Segeyaro on the required pre season date: https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/03/04/201 ... all-teams/

So the Segeyaro contract is not registered, and they must promote another minimum wage player in so they have 29. The NRL minimum wage is $105,000 but four months of the season is gone, so that costs them $70,000. So Segeyaro's contract for eight months, must have been worth roughly $373,000 - meaning his contract value for a whole season would be one third higher than that. So I can't see how that adds up.

Then by 30 June they need to add another player to get to 30. So presumably they need to offload another higher wage player and replace them with two minimum wage players. That's four months cost at $35,000 for each of the minimum wage players... so the player offloaded has to be on an annual $210,000 contract.

This is a reply to my tweet by Jason Oliver.

It’s 28 right now. They’ll move somebody before June 30 and probably sign a cheapie and upgrade Segeyaro’s likely Newton Jets contract.

This is all assuming they had filled their cap... they may have been 150000 under to start off with... be interesting to see what happen if any of their players get rep bonuses too...

Yeah it doesn't add up at all. That would put Segeyaro in about 500k per season bracket and that's just not realistic.

They are 28 by not registering Segeyaro. But they must have 29 by Round 1. This is their problem.

Paul Gallen would quit Cronulla Sharks, NRL if premiership ever stripped

Paul Gallen says he would walk out on the Sharks and rugby league if Cronulla’s 2016 premiership was ever stripped over salary cap issues.

Cronulla escaped that fate despite the NRL uncovering $700,000 in discrepancies from 2013-18 after the club self-reported a $50,000 discrepancy.

I'd love to see a Smith/Gallen testimonial match. Doesn't matter that Smith has already had one, he should have one each year for the next five years. He sure needs the money after the NRL clipped his 'cheating' wings years ago. Smith could bring out his grappling playbook and Gallen could find some stitches to pull out.

Cronulla Sharks Paul Gallen confirms he'll retire at the end of 2019

Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen has confirmed the 2019 season will be his last in the NRL.

Gallen announced his retirement on radio, saying he intended to continue his work with Channel Nine and remain involved in clubland in a mentoring role from 2020.

How Shane Flanagan brought Cronulla Sharks to their knees with cap rorts

Shane Flanagan made one fatal mistake that plunged the Cronulla Sharks into a million-dollar salary cap scandal and cost him his job. He sent a confidential spreadsheet of undisclosed player payments from his own private Bigpond account to his Sharks email address on June 3, 2017.

Luke Lewis, James Maloney, Wade Graham, Valentine Holmes, Josh Dugan, Jack Bird and Chris Heighington are the players embroiled in the scandal.

The reports originally suggested $700,000. But it turns out it was around $1 million. The $700k figure was for the following four years:

2018 $340,000
2019 $240,000
2020 $25,000
2021 $25,000

Between 2013 and 2016 there was another $280,000 for Luke Lewis and Jack Bird according to the report.

They originally self reported $75,000.

The figures are given year by year above... 2013 to 2021.

The Storm cheating totalled $3.78 million: $303,000 in 2006, $459,000 in 2007, $957,000 in 2008, $1.021 million in 2009 and $1.04 million in 2010.

It's fair to say the 2019-2021 figures would've increased.

It just shows how easy it is to cheat the cap really. Just don't go sending anything to your work email.
