Laurie Daley Cup Round 5

FULL TIME

Monaro Colts 32 defeated Penrith Panthers 16 at Seiffert Oval

Good win for the Colts. Fullback Tristan Eldridge and hooker Hayden Bradley produced good matches. The Colts were out of finals contention, but it looks like they may have prevented the Panthers from finishing top two.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview

Image

The 2019 Canberra Raiders Cup kicks off with four big clashes in a Super Sunday this weekend - headlined by the clash between the Woden Valley Rams and the Yass Magpies.

Woden Valley Rams V Yass Magpies

The Rams took the premiership in 2018, under the leadership of veteran captain, Lincoln Withers and coach Ash Barnes. Barnes has a reputation for getting the best out of young players, and in 2019 he has been appointed coach of the Canberra Raiders Under 20s team - with the Green Machine re-entering the Jersey Flegg competition in their own right. With Barnes moving on, Lincoln Withers will step up to take over the Rams' coaching reins. The former Canberra Raiders hooker and half becomes the second member of his family to coach the Rams, after his father Trevor coached the side in the early 1980s. It's not foreign territory for Withers, who has previously coached the Gungahlin Bulls in the Canberra Raiders Cup. He'll be backed up by Raiders legendary winger and fullback, Ken Nagas, as assistant coach.

The Rams have shown some good form already in 2019, taking out the pre-season West Belconnen Nines competition. We can expect they'll again be a strong contender come August and September.

The Magpies are celebrating their 100th season this year, the first club in the region to mark their centenary. They'll play this year with a special commemorative logo on their jerseys. It is an extraordinary achievement for Yass, with many rugby league clubs folding in small country towns. They have not consistently fielded teams at the level of the Canberra Raiders Cup - but have won six premierships in the Canberra competition, the last in 2006. The Magpies dropped back to the the George Tooke competition for two years, but returned to the Canberra Raiders Cup in 2015 - and the club has done a great job rebuilding a competitive football team.

The Magpies have a new coach, Cameron Hardy, with Jarrad Teka heading to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers this season. Hardy was the coach of the Bungendore Tigers in the George Tooke Shield last year. He has previously coached the Woden Rams and Belconnen United Scholars in the Canberra Raiders Cup, and was an assistant coach at West Belconnen Warriors during their premiership-winning 2004 season. He will be looking to build on the Magpies' fifth placed finish last year.

"I had two years in the wilderness," Hardy said after his appointment. "I had a fantastic year at Bungendore, great club, great group of blokes. Yass approached me, and with the family's blessing, moved on. Looking forward to it."

The Hardys already had a strong connection with the Magpies, as Cameron's son Josh coaches the Magpies' Katrina Fanning Cup team.

"I’ve got three boys … I’m looking forward to working with Josh a bit more," Hardy said after his appointment. "I’m not sure if Josh is looking forward to working with his dad, but anyway... I’m looking forward to it, it’ll be great."

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Goulburn Bulldogs didn't have the best of seasons in 2018, finishing seventh, but they have built strongly for the coming season, with the recruitment of former Raiders half Mitch Cornish, and his brother Tyler. Goulburn products, they'll join their younger brother Nick at the Bulldogs.

Mitch Cornish had an offer to continue at the Sydney Roosters in 2019, but he was keen to return to home base, after predominantly playing at NSW Cup level last season. Tyler Cornish slipped through the Raiders fingers, and he eventually made his NRL debut with the Gold Coast Titans, before returning home in 2017. He played with Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties, mostly at fullback, last year. Goulburn also have former Raider Haydon Hodge and former Rooster James Aubusson on the books.

"It’s fantastic to welcome back two of our local juniors to the club," Goulburn coach Adam Kyle said, now in his second year in charge at the club. "Both Mitch and Tyler are quality players with NRL experience who will strengthen our play making options and their professionalism and passion for the club will add to our culture.

"With the three Cornish brothers and James Aubusson committing, our spine will have plenty of NRL experience which will help us immensely."

Their opponents in Round 1, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, continue under the direction of former Broncos and Dragons hooker, Aaron Gorrell - and it'll be his tenth season as coach of the club. He's already delivered three premierships to the Kangaroos, but in 2018, they were knocked out in week one of the finals by the West Belconnen Warriors. Gorrell will be looking to restore the Kangaroos' status as one of the powerhouses of the competition - but the task will be tougher, given the loss of halves Brent Crisp and Derek Hay.

However, the Roos will have young halves Tre Williams and Lachlan Cooper at their disposal, both of whom have represented in the Raiders' junior teams. Cooper spent the off season on a train and trial deal with the Raiders' top squad. They've also gained Sione and Gideon Afemui, players who've come through the Raiders' juniors. This should be a good clash between two teams with a bit of a new look.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors

Grand Finalists, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, have a new mentor, with Justin Giteau deciding to step down as coach at the end of last season so as to spend more time with his family. He took over the job of coaching the Monaro Colts in the Country Championship - and has taken them to this Saturday's final against Illawarra.

Jarrad Teka has signed on to coach the Bushies for the next two seasons, after spending just one year at the Yass Magpies. He's previously been a player and coach at Tuggeranong, so is no stranger to the club. The Bushrangers finished as minor premiers in 2018, but were beaten twice by the Woden Valley Rams in the finals. They produced a huge comeback in an epic Grand Final, but a Lincoln Withers field goal proved the difference - leaving the Bushrangers still in search of their first premiership. Though the Bushies have lost some key players, including experienced half Michael Picker - the club will be stronger for the addition of former Raiders forward Jarrad Kennedy, who played with Mounties in the NSW Cup in 2018.

It's back to the future at the West Belconnen Warriors, with former premiership winning coach Adam Peters returning the club this year. Former Raiders prop Troy Thompson stood down as Warriors coach at the end of 2018, to focus on family and a burgeoning real estate career. Peters coached the Warriors between 2006 and 2011 and was the captain-coach when the club won the 2007 Premiership. Peters made his NRL debut for the Raiders, playing 17 first grade games in two different stints at the club. He also played 29 matches for the Manly Sea Eagles.

The Warriors have recruited well for their spine, welcoming back Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts to Kippax. Both are very experienced players, and both have won the Les McIntyre Medal for Canberra Raiders Cup Player of the Year in seasons past. Crisp is a point scoring machine, and even though he's approaching veteran class, he will be a big loss for the Kangaroos and big gain for the Warriors.

The Warriors finished fourth on the ladder in 2018, and made it to the Preliminary Final - where they were soundly beaten by the Bushrangers 22-0. They'll have an early chance for some revenge in this one.

Queanbeyan Blues V Belconnen United Sharks

The Queanbeyan Blues have 24 premierships in the Canberra competition to their name, more than double any other club. They were premiers in 2017, but uncharacteristically finished sixth in 2018, after an injury affected season. The Blues are a club that demand success and captain-coach Terry Campese will looking to restore the lustre to the powerhouse club.

The former Raiders five eighth, Campese, aged 34, is now certainly a veteran and has struggled at times with injury, after more than one knee reconstruction. But he's a majestic figure in the Canberra Raiders Cup, no doubt. He is a player who has so much time, and the passes to set up tries are still magnificent. Turning it around will be tough, with the club having lost the likes Aaron McInnes, Trevor Thurling, Josh Baker, Tyler Stevens and Adam Misios - players who have been important to the Blue's previous successes. There are not a lot of big name additions, with Isaiah Latu, a junior Wallaby and hooker Joel Munro, a Gold Coast Titans junior, the most notable.

The Belconnen United Sharks have struggled in recent seasons, and finished last on the ladder in 2018, with one draw and 15 losses to their name. They showed a lot of promise in some matches, but lacked experience. Coach Scott Logan - another former Raiders forward - has recruited some big names and loads of experience for 2019, bringing former Raiders hooker Glen Buttriss and forward Sam Mataora to the club - along with powerhouse back Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai from the West Belconnen Warriors. It is Logan's third season with the Sharks, and it promises considerable improvement for the men in sky blue. This Round 1 match up at Seiffert Oval should certainly be a competitive one - and give a good indication of where the teams stand.

Yass give Peace a chance to lead Magpies in centenary season

"It's definitely a privilege, an honour, being such a significant year for the club," he said. "I've been at the club for three years and I really can't see myself playing anywhere else. It's such a family oriented club.

Monaro Colts looking to back-up Country Championships Final

Monaro are in their third consecutive NSW Under-23s Country Championships final in a row, having won it in 2017 and missed out last year. Monaro captain Josh Stuckey said they would try and back up and play for their Canberra Raiders Cup teams in the season openers on Sunday.

"That's the plan. A lot of us are thinking about backing up, but just worrying about Saturday and thinking about the game and just see what happens," Stuckey said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Wrap

Image

The Woden Valley Rams opened their premiership defence with a 33-16 victory over the Yass Magpies at Phillip Oval in Round 1 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. The Rams started the match on fire, the forwards thriving on a glut of possession and territory. Second rower Brad Martin was the first to cross the white stripe in the 11th minute, before captain Jeff Martin set up Martin's second row partner, Dan Prior, for a four pointer. Not to be left out, Jeff Morgan crashed over the line himself, through the middle of some heavy traffic in the 26th minute. The Lincoln Withers conversion gave the Rams a 16-0 advantage, which they took to the half time break.

Eight minutes into the second half, half back and coach Lincoln Withers produced a clever try - and the Rams were cruising at 22-0. However, the Magpies gradually worked their way back into the game, finally posting their first try in the 54th minute - with winger Brendon Houston taking advantage of a well crafted overlap to score in the north-east corner. Shaun Davis could not convert, but the Magpies kept up the pressure. In the 62nd minute, Saipani Aiolupo forced his way over the line. And when Isaih Niumata added his four pointer - backing up the great break of Mitch Turner - suddenly the visitors trailed by just six.

However, the Magpies' momentum was broken with around 10 minutes left on the clock. Yass fullback Phillip Sparnon was dispossessed of the ball on his own goal line, just as it looked like he'd defused a Lincoln Withers kick - and Adam Lucas pounced on the ball. Late inclusion, winger Caleb Malisaukas put the result beyond any doubt with a try in the 78th minute - the Withers conversion giving Woden a 32-16 lead. Withers iced the cake with a field goal, as the bell rang.

In other matches, the Goulburn Bulldogs were too strong at home for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, running out 34-14 winners. The Cornish brothers, Nick and Mitch, put on three four pointers between them, in the six tries to three victory. At Greenway, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers posted a 10 point win over the West Belconnen Warriors, while the Queanbeyan Blues piled on nine tries in a big 50-12 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks. New Blues hooker Joel Munro scored a double, as did new centre recruit, Isaiah Latu.

On Saturday, the Monaro Colts - comprising representatives from the Canberra Raiders Cup - played in their third straight NSW Country Championship Final. Unfortunately, they were well beaten at Mudgee's Glen Willow Stadium by the Illawarra South Coast Dragons, 42-12.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos lose, but bounce back with ex-Raider signing

They lost their opening game, but the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have added 120 NRL games of experience for the rest of the Canberra Raiders Cup season, with the signing of Reece Robinson. The Kangaroos went down 34-14 to the Goulburn Bulldogs in their season opener at Goulburn on Sunday. He’s expected to arrive after Easter.

"We'll have to see where he fits into the set-up and where we can maximise his strengths," Roos coach Aaron Gorrell said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview

Image

The Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval this Saturday headlines Round 2 of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan Blues and the Queanbeyan Kangaroos have been the two powerhouse teams of the competition over the past decade, with at least one team contesting the Grand Final in eight of the past 10 years - and facing each other three times. Between them, they collected the premiership six times over the decade. 2018 was the only recent Grand Final that was missing them both. The Kangaroos made the finals last season, but made a week one exit, while the Blues finished outside the top four. Both will be aiming to rebuild their premiership credentials quickly, but both have had a fair amount of player turnover during the off season.

The Blues didn't seem to be too affected in Round 1, posting 50 points against the Belconnen United Sharks, running out 50-12 winners. New Blues hooker Joel Munro scored a double, as did rugby union centre recruit, Isaiah Latu. Captain coach Terry Campese was in the thick of things, as usual, setting tries up with trademark kicks and passes, and scoring one himself. The magnitude of the victory was slightly surprising, given the Sharks had built up their squad this season - so that bodes well for the Blues this weekend.

The Kangaroos have lost their big name play maker Brent Crisp to the Warriors - and found the going tougher than the Blues last week. Against a new look Goulburn Bulldogs, they lost 34-14 on the road. They consoled themselves by announcing a new signing, former Raider Travis Robinson - but he probably won't be available for this match, and probably won't arrive until after Easter.

In their past two meetings, the Blues and Roos have one win each to their name. The Blues won 38-22 at Seiffert in Round 6 last season, while the Kangaroos turned the tables at Freebody Oval in Round 15, winning 42-34. Given the Round 1 form, it's difficult to go past a Blues victory in this one.

Gungahlin Bulls V West Belconnen Warriors

The Gungahlin Bulls play their first game of the season this weekend, after drawing the short straw and being awarded the Round 1 bye. They meet the West Belconnen Warriors at Gungahlin Enclosed on Saturday, with both teams keen to post their first victory of the year. Last week, the Warriors suffered a 32-22 loss to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway, despite the presence of experienced halves recruits, Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts.

The Bulls won just three matches in 2018, twice against the last placed Sharks. But they also defeated the eventual Grand Finalists, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, towards the end of the season - and the young team will be looking to repeat more of those sorts of performances in 2019.

The Warriors won both matches between these two clubs last year, grabbing a 36-26 win at Kippax in Round 3 - before producing a more decisive 38-8 victory at Gungahlin in Round 12. We'll get a better feel for how the Bulls are shaping up for 2019 after this match, but given the absence of any other form, we'll tip a win for the visitors in this game.

Belconnen United Sharks V Woden Valley Rams

The Belconnen United Sharks host the 2018 premiers, the Woden Valley Rams, at O'Connor on Saturday - hoping to turn around their Round 1 form against the Blues. The Sharks have struggled in recent seasons, and finished last on the ladder in 2018, with one draw and 15 losses. They showed a lot of promise in some matches, but lacked experience. Coach Scott Logan has recruited some big names and loads of experience for 2019, bringing hooker Glen Buttriss and forward Sam Mataora to the club - along with powerhouse back Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai from the West Belconnen Warriors. Logan will be looking for that recruitment drive to start to pay dividends this weekend.

The Rams have a new playing coach, Lincoln Withers, and some new personnel this season - but they didn't look like they had skipped a beat in the first half of their match against the Magpies last week. The Magpies came back in the second half, but in the end, the Rams were fairly comfortable 33-16 winners at Phillip.

The Rams swamped the Sharks in both matches played between the clubs in 2018, posting more than 60 points in each. The Rams won 68-6 in Round 9 at O'Connor, before recording a 62-18 win at home in a tune up for their finals campaign. Hopefully the Sharks can put in a competitive performance, but we'll have to tip the defending title holders in this one.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Yass Magpies

Goulburn Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle has also recruited strongly over the off season - with local products Mitch and Tyler Cornish the most notable new arrivals - and, if Round 1 is anything to go by, it looks likely to pay off. They had a good win over the Kangaroos last week and shape as favourites in this one.

The Magpies have a new coach, Cameron Hardy - and while they have lost players like the Naughton brothers, they have picked up some good forward recruits. It didn't quite come together against the Rams in Round 1, but their second half comeback gives the Magpies some prospect of changing that this week. Hardy will be looking for better ball control, in particular.

"Woden are the current premiers, they have good structure, they've got good personnel and they've got a good coach and you just can't turn it over to a team [like that] and continually give them the ball. Swings and roundabouts, it turned around ... there were definitely some positives for us, but there was plenty to work on for sure," he told The Canberra Times.

The Magpies won both matches against the Bulldogs last year, 50-24 at Walker Park in Round 9, and 28-22 at Goulburn. However 2019 is a new season for these teams... and we'll go with the Bulldogs at home in this fixture.

The Greenhouse will be at the Blues V Kangaroos clash on Saturday afternoon. We will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Former Kangaroo Josh Hitchins jumps ship to Blues into Queanbeyan derby

He's made the move, crossed the town, done the unthinkable and jumped from the Roos to the Blues. And it's become a family affair. Although Josh Hitchins' girlfriend wasn't exactly thrilled.

"I sat with Campo at the awards night when I went to watch Kasey and just got chatting. Just wanted a change and there it was."
