That's why I added inverted commas! When your number one move is shifting Wighton to the wing and bringing in Abbey at fullback... that's surely grounds for sacking by NRL.com!

With the loss of Blake Austin, Jamie Soward believes Canberra is lacking a star half and thinks they should have made an offer to sign George Williams from the Wigan Warriors.

“No disrespect to Sam Williams or Aiden Sezer, but they just don’t scare me in terms of their attack. “The Raiders have missed their chance and I think it’s because they have not got a strike or a top 10 half-back over the last four or five years, and now they have lost their x-factor player in Austin.

Williams looks well above average but always a gamble spending big money on an English half that is untried in the NRL. But he is worth the gamble if the money was available.

Williams is good but has a marquee spot already so wouldn't come cheap as far as Superleague players go.

1 - Wighton
2 - Cotric
3 - Croker
4 - Leilua
5 - Oldfield
6 - Sezer
7 - Williams ( 14 )
8 - Soliola
9 - Hodgson ( 7 )
10 - Papalii
11 - Tapine
12 - J.Bateman
13 - Whitehead

14 - Havili ( 9 )
15 - Sutton
16 - Lui
17 - Guler / L.Bateman

That’s how the team will be named but the ( brackets ) will be the team that runs out. I don’t agree with it but I have a sneaky suspicion that’s going to happen.

I’ll be doing a summation of the consensus Round 1 team, based on this thread... so if you haven’t listed your 17 yet... do it before the end of the week!

Looking back at his round 1 sides
2014 - Jack at 6 and Allwood at center
2015 - Bateman randomly appears on the bench
2016 - No big surprises, except maybe Vaughan off the bench. The named side did have Austin on the bench.
2017 - Cotric (full credit, this one was a good one), Priest a starting prop
2018 - Sezer the bench hooker (apologies for those who had blacked it out)
I had this post stuck in my mind when I watched Royce Hunt start for the #1 team in the trial from last night.

I can’t think of any reason at all that he’d be starting in the trial ahead of Sutton, Guler, Bateman, Collins, Lui (who was left out altogether), Murchie etc if he wasn’t geneuinly in Stuart’s plans for the start of the season. I know John Bateman didn’t play but that’s not a like for like player either.

That looks like this seasons Allwood style selection from left field to me.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Yes it does. To give Royce Hunt his due, he's put in huge numbers for Mounties last year.

It is rehashing an old argument but if he was playing so well last year that he could force his way into the team for round 1 why didn’t he get a few extra first grade games in front of the blokes leaving the club.

I don’t have a problem with it. He’s one of our only forwards that is a genuine prop.

Mounties don't seem to have posted anything on Facebook or Twitter about a trial against Wentworthville Magpies on the weekend... their last posts in late January listed their trials as:

Trial 1
23rd February
#ISP and #RMCup 6.30pm v Wentworthville
Aubrey Keech Reserve

Trial 2
2nd March
#RMCup v Cabramatta 3.30pm
#ISP v Bulldogs 5.15pm
#HNWP v Cabramatta 7pm
Cabramatta Sports Ground

However, Wentworthville Magpies were tweeting on Saturday that they were playing a Ron Massey Cup trial against Wyong... no mention of a trial against Mounties.

Greg I love the idea of filling the bench with profit, but you cant go past the previous success of Sezer coming off the bench to pay dummy half.

I hope we see that, but I get the feeling that Hunt will be selected ahead of Guler and L Bateman ahead of Horsburgh.

I had Guler starting ahead of Soliola to ensure some experience and maybe a bit more punch can come off the bench.
