I wish Horsburgh would get the spot ahead of L.Bateman but you just know it won't happen. He would be a bigger chance of displacing Guler or Lui.

I'm going to weep if John Bateman doesn't start. You don't buy an English international to play him off the bench.

I don’t think you can put him straight in. I think he needs to play a couple of games coming of the bench before expecting him to play 60 mins +.greeneyed wrote:I'm going to weep if John Bateman doesn't start. You don't buy an English international to play him off the bench.

The guy plays 80 minutes in test matches. Fitness shouldn't be an issue if he has been able to train.LastRaider wrote: ↑February 24, 2019, 8:26 amI don’t think you can put him straight in. Except that Ricky didn't do that with either Hodgo or Whitehead- he flogged them both with massive minutes early doors until the adjusted. Whitehead was near falling over at times but kept making his tackles... I personally don't see Ricky changing that strategy for Bateman, but we'll see.LastRaider wrote: ↑February 24, 2019, 8:26 amI don’t think you can put him straight in. Bateman will be ready to play 80 if Ricky needs him to. Hopefully whatever injury kept him out of the trial isn't impacting his training too much.

Re: 2019 Rd 1 V Titans: Teams and Previews
The FG players looked lacking in match fitness against the Doggies. If they don't lift in intensity as far as line speed, the Titans will put on early points after gaining 15+ metres per run up the middle. Bench spots and how Ricky uses them (there's a worrying thought based on the past) will be critical.
If Wighton is going to make it at 5/8th, he's going to need more time to think under pressure. Titans would have seen how panicked he was against the Doggies and will look to do the same. Williams seemed to do that for him, whereas Sezer was concentrating on his own game knowing he is under pressure to deliver the goods.
Ricky has a lot of love for Luke Bateman as well. So, even though Bateman is one dimensional in attack, he'll probably get a spot on the bench based on his trial efforts.
As for John Bateman, jeez. He was interviewed on fan day saying he wanted to play in the middle. Unfortunately for him, Sammy was walking around in the background with his shirt off and he looked absolutely ripped in comparison. I'd put him into the 2nd row and Whitehead at lock where he was a stand out last season. There's not much difference between centre and 2nd row, so Bateman will be okay there in attack.
Williams must have realised he can't expect to play NRL and be tossed around in defence. He's done something about it during the off-season. I like that kind of determination.
Sutton might be struggling with the heat. Luckily, the game starts at 6pm. If he comes off the bench once it gets cooler like I'd have him do, he'll get a chance to show what his wares. I doubt he'll get more than 20 minutes per half. No way will he start the season at Mounties after being brought over from England. He'll get the same chance as Jordan Turner did. Hopefully, he'll realise there's more to winning an NRL spot than just showing up, which I feel was Turner's problem.
My preferred line-up (with what I expect from Ricky in brackets):
1. Nicoll-Klokstad
2. Cotric
3. Croker
4. Leilua
5. Oldfield (Abbey if either 4 or 5 are still injured)
6. Wighton
7. Williams (though Sezer will get first shot and we'll all be calling for his head on a pike by game's end)
8. Soliola
9. Hodgson
10. Papalii
11. J. Bateman
12. Tapine
13. Whitehead
14. Sutton
15. Havili
16. Lui
17. Guler (Luke Bateman will sneak in instead)
Extended bench I expect from Ricky:
18. Williams
19. Guler
20. Hunt
21. Horsburgh

Not sure who I'd drop, initially I thought I had Red in there... Probably Guler.
As long as there is no L. Bateman named I'll live.

I just think it would make more sense to bring him in through playing the utility role (no. 14) in the aim of having him in the run on team by round 4.

I see him starting and worst case scenario he has a rest at some point in the match. With our current stocks we have a few players who could play 80minutes and therefore if Bateman needs a break it won't have to much impact on our bench.

Re: 2019 Rd 1 V Titans: Teams and Previews
I probably wouldn't pick L Bateman in a full strength side assuming that current form equals current reputations, but I really don't see the reason for the grossly disparaging remarks about him by many here, something of a mob attack almost. Bateman gets picked because he like Fensom and others before him always turn up and do the dirty work, always work through the pain of fatigue to take one more hitup or make one more tackle. It seems to me that to some critics his willingness to turn up for hitups is a cause of much of their criticism. But he turns up when others don't, does the dirty stuff others sometimes neglect.
Re: 2019 Rd 1 V Titans: Teams and Previews
He is nowhere near Fensom's ability or contribution during the latters decent seasons. Fensom was regularly our best player, Bateman has never managed that, and he plays much lower minutes so his ability to play under fatigue can't be compared.Cranky Old Man wrote: ↑February 24, 2019, 8:25 pm I probably wouldn't pick L Bateman in a full strength side assuming that current form equals current reputations, but I really don't see the reason for the grossly disparaging remarks about him by many here, something of a mob attack almost.
There is a tendency to call players with very limited skill sets that try hard underrated and to praise them for effort, but most of the time they are just mediocre players.

2019 Rd 1 V Titans: Teams and Previews
Very confident that J. Bateman will start. In his interview on 666 Stick stated that 4 of his starting 13 were injured. Likely Rapana, Leilua, Oldfield and Bateman.
In saying that, I’m curious as to Lui’s spot in the team. Not on any Injury list and was absent from yesterday’s trial. Stick said he’d be carrying his top squad for that trial so maybe there’s something going on we don’t know about.
Reminds me about the time a healthy Edrick Lee sat out our 2017 trial only to be sent to the Sharks a few days later.

It could just be a minutes/fitness thing. Playing 60 minutes for Mounties Vs 20 in a trial would make sense for a front rower.

Does anyone have any stats from the Mounties game? Did any other Raiders contracted players play? I’d assume the leftovers from the last trial got a run? Starling, Hudson Young, Dan Keir etc?

Hudson Young was at the Bega trial. No idea on the rest.

Not too phased about who gets the last bench spot but I really hope Stick goes with Guler and Horsburgh. Given he usually only plays one of his middles 10-20 minutes I think Horsburgh should play this role due to his aggression and work rate.
Really excited for this match, can't believe it's still 20 days away . I think if our pack can match their's then we will have too much class on the edges. Hopefully the spine can silence a few doubters as well.
Let's go.
