Re: The Cricket Thread
I’ll stand by this I think Head being the golden boy of the current crop is a big issue. 7 centuries in 81 first class games whilst still averaging mid thirties sums him up.
Gets outs between 20-80 way, way too often.

With the way CA picks teams, his Test form will play into that Im sure.julian87 wrote: ↑January 29, 2019, 7:59 amHead is not even close to the World Cup side.Matt wrote: ↑January 28, 2019, 7:04 pmThere is no way the national skipper plays for the A side.
Id be surprised if Head isnt in the WC squad TBH.
If those other 2 played in the A side, im ok with that.
The A side is supposed to be an up and comers/ fringe players side. I think my problem is that Maxwell will be, and Handscomb could be in the WC side.
He’s behind Finch, Warner, (Carey), Khawaja, Smith, Marsh, Marsh, Stoinis, Maxwell, Handscomb

Still no confirmation from the man himself that he was dressed up as a boxing kangaroo.

Australia win the toss and bat vs Sri Lanka. Marcus Harris chasing a few wide ones early and eventually paid the price. Not good batting.

Ball is hooping everywhere. Harris and Khawaja out chasing balls they shouldn't. Its bowler friendly conditions so need to repsect that and see out the first hour.

Cracking ball toget Marnus. The 1st 2 wickets were poor decisions by the batsman chasing wide balls. That one was a perfect away seamer right in the corridor.
Right now it looks like the Sri Lankan 2nd string attack is on the same level as their first choice bowlers. Impressive start by them.

Plenty of seam and swing early for the Sris. Aussies not coping well. Its going to be tougher than this in England so not boding well at the moment.

Michael Vaughan said at start of play that Sri Lanka needed 3 wickets in the 1st hour if they were going to be any chance. They did exactly that.

Head and Burns looking good. Both passed 50 since lunch
Re: The Cricket Thread
Both have booked their flights to England.
Head really needs a consistent run, has shown he will learn and should be a good foil with Smith.

Re: The Cricket Thread
I agree. I think both will go to England. However, only 1 of Harris and Burns can open alongside Warner. Despite his failure today, I think Harris is still in front. I do worry about the technique of both though. Burns plants his front foot, esp early, and will therefore be a prime nic off target. Harris chases the wide stuff and isnt learning not to. He also plays that awful cut glide thing. Its nearly as bad as when Shaun Marsh used to play that front foot cut. Both are catching practice for gully.
As for Head, I still worry about his technique, but he keeps scoring runs. So he is proving me wrong with nearly every innings. I will wait til he has to face a swinging ball in England though.

Burns 4th test hundred in 15 tests. He's only 2 short of Shaun Marsh in that regard and 2 ahead of Mitch. They had 38 and 31 tests respectively.

Re: The Cricket Thread
Throws in a selection curve ball. It seemed a given that Warner would join Harris and Burns would drop out. Be harsh to do that now Burns has the century to his name. Maybe a re-shuffle and Burns bat lower down?

There is no guarantee that Warner and Smith will get back to the level they were playing at, Warner tbh had massive question marks before his suspension and wasn't in the best form.
Head dropped, probably the luck he needed to get over his century funk.

Happy for Burns. His form said he should have been in the side against India. Amazing how players in form seem to also get a little luck go their way. I would hope the selectors have learned to pick on form, but Hohns has his favourites and we were 'stuck in the Marshes' for far too long.

Mate, I don't trust any of the top 6 ATM. However, there are varying levels and reasons. I've already outlined 3 of them.LP Raider wrote: ↑February 1, 2019, 2:06 pmSo your basically worried about every batsman except the elephant in the room.Matt wrote: ↑February 1, 2019, 1:57 pmI agree. Labuschange has the best technique. Plays very straight, leaves well, and is happy to bat time. BUT, not sure he has enough shots to be productive when he does get through the tough bit.
I like Patterson, I wanted him to play a couple of years back when Maddinson was picked. I have talked about him a lot. However, right now he has 30 Test runs against a Sri Lanka side that is no better than a state side, and with the current side have 3 quicks with 6 games between them, it could definately be argued that its worse. Even if it was a effortless and almost graceful 30.
Khawaja, aka your elephant, has had a terrible summer. No doubt. I suspect the stuff with his brother has played into his mindset, mentioned or not. Yes, his numbers at home are much better than abroad, BUT, the guy avgs over 40 in Test cricket from 40 Tests. He also avgs over 40 in 1st class cricket. He is one of the best batsmen we have produced in the last 10 years. I have no doubt there are more runs in his future.
Re: The Cricket Thread
I'm sorry but Khawaja just dangled the bat, I mean if your talking technique that's about as bad as it gets.
The other 2 I can excuse, Koala is terribly out of form and how the selectors came to the conclusion that he should be picked over Short in the ODI squad is probably indicative as to why Australian sport is so pathetic.

Im glad they picked Patterson after his twin tons against Sri Lanka in the CA XI game.

Well done Travis Head, only his 8th Test and already a test match century.
Our most consistent and best batsmen this summer.
Not from NSW but should be OK for another couple of tests.
