Daley confirms once again he does nothing for the Raiders post his playing career. Disappointing.

He was unbearable to listen to when he was in the Dragons camp.
Re: Wests Tigers sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
so what offers have we made to him to be involved in our coaching staff? Cause i havent heard of us trying to bring him at any stage...
But we still gonna pretend like he's doing us dirty because he wants a paid coaching job in the city he lives.
Cool, ok.

Re: Wests Tigers sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
He isn’t the guy we need, but it’s frustrating to see other teams with halves coaches, while we keep struggling with Average halves who can’t manage games.
I loved hearing Matty Johns talking about how he was changing Adam Reynolds game, and just wish we could have someone come in and work with Sezer/Williams/Hingano, and now Jack.
Because Sticky has proven for decades, while he was the best half, he’s a terrible halves coach.

Didn’t we have Andrew Johns on the books coaching McCrone at one point?

I’ve said this before, but I have zero confidence in Andrew Johns’ ability to coach somebody. Might get some bounce/confidence from having met him.
For coaches I think you really want the next level down. The players who had to work hard and think about their game just to be a first grader. You don’t want someone whose natural talent and vision just made it happen for them.
I suspect Matt Johns would make a better halves coach than Andrew.

Re: Wests Tigers sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
I think in the cases of guys like Stuart, Daley, A.Johns... they were so naturally gifted, their vision for the game was incredible but how do you teach that? I mean you can sit down in a film session and show someone some tape and say this is how i read the play, this is why and because player x did this, i did this because i knew it then that opened up that... and whatever... you can do that, but at some point the player is either able to process that and see it in real time or they cant.
Least of all to mention the chances someone like Daley created simply because he was Laurie Daley and he bigger, stronger, better than everyone else... you cant teach that.
So yeah i think Greeny is right, in terms of coaching, it feels like the guys best served to do that are the less talented guys who had to grind daily to get the most out of their talents because it didnt come as naturally to them as the elite players

Maguire wants good mate to give Tigers halves some help - but no deal done yet
Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has reached out to good friend Laurie Daley about coming on board at the joint venture as a halves consultant.
"Loz would be an enormous addition for any organisation because of his knowledge,'' Maguire said. "I talk footy with Loz all the time. We've had a connection from our Canberra days. But nothing has been done in terms of him officially coming on board.''

Re: Wests Tigers sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
I think Johns was just a part time consultant for us but he I think he has pretty good recent record as a more dedicated halves coach.
Also when I listen to him talk football vs Daley and Stuart he clearly knows the modern game a lot better than they do. When he is serious he is one of the best minds in the game.

Re: Wests Tigers set to sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
Just a theory....
Great halves with natural ability might not know how they do it and so cant teach it.
Players who teach themselves, or are taught, to be good halves, learn the techniques and can therefore pass them on.
So it could be that guys like a. Johns and stuart might not be good halves coaches yet ironically, someone like McCrone could end up a good coach. not saying mccrone is anywhere near a good half but has miraculously sustained a career with little to no ability.
It would be great to see matty johns as a raiders halves coach.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Yeah i think that's exactly what Greeny and I are saying too. Guys who had to actively think about their game and work at it because they weren't very good... they may not be good but they know how to work to be good, so putting those techniques and work ethic into a more talented player should, in theory, produce pretty good resultswoppadingo wrote: ↑January 24, 2019, 4:12 pm Just a theory....

Josh Reynolds type. Low end of the scale talent wise. Had to rely on game smarts to compete at the level he did.Pigman wrote: ↑January 24, 2019, 7:45 pmYeah i think that's exactly what Greeny and I are saying too. Re: Wests Tigers set to sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
i'll bet Cooper Cronk makes a damn good coach if he wants to be.
He had to work REALLY hard to be as good as he is. He's more talented than most but he was not gifted with any real physical gifts. He didnt come in as a particularly highly touted halfback prospect, he was a utility, i don't think he's a JT level natural talent.

Agreed, some of the things he points out in commentary is pretty interesting and not something that you pick up on immediately.edwahu wrote:I think Johns was just a part time consultant for us but he I think he has pretty good recent record as a more dedicated halves coach.

A McCrone and Buttriss coaching duo could be absolute dynamite. Two average players who punched out 100 NRL games.

Cronk above average on talent but his work ethic and game smarts made him one of the best ever. Almost like best of both worlds. I'll be shocked if he doesn't turn out to be a brilliant coach in some shape or form.Pigman wrote: ↑January 24, 2019, 8:17 pm i'll bet Cooper Cronk makes a damn good coach if he wants to be.

Or alternatively, he's even smarter, like Sterling, and figures he should never kill the mystique by actually testing it against reality.Northern Raider wrote: ↑January 24, 2019, 9:56 pmCronk above average on talent but his work ethic and game smarts made him one of the best ever. Those were/are two blokes who effectively coached while on the field. It doesn't mean they could coach a whole club, but they could probably offer a lot as specialists. Like Matt Johns. Or Paul Green. Then again, against that I give you Jason Taylor. And Stuart.
Ideally we could find some sort of halves-whisperer that no one else knew about. Hopefully it's Cappy...

The example was woeful.
The only reason microne got the nod over Herbert was his quickness and effort (at the time and I still agree with that decision).
However he was a garbage kicker / passer / decision maker.
Kicking and passing are just technique and practice. Something he could have improved greatly but never did.
Decision making you can improve but if you as a player never improved in this area, you probably aren’t the best bloke to be coaching others.
JT became elite off sheer hard work and honing his skills, not due to size or speed / Cooper Cronk same again.
i would say Trent Barrett made a go of coaching despite him fitting squarely in the elite because of athleticism category.
But who knows if he doesn’t get another gig his coaching won’t be remembered all that fondly.
Re: Wests Tigers set to sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
GE why does Laurie cop the criticism and every other bloke who played for us who is coaching (or consulting) elsewhere like Mal get a free pass?
It is what Pigman has been banging on about, these blokes aren't particularly well credentialed so they need to take employment and look after themselves and their families completely selfishly where they can in most cases.

We continue to **** about with blokes that are part of some fraternity. It's infuriating.
Re: Wests Tigers set to sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
I'm not too thrilled with Mal Meninga joining the Titans either to be honest.
Re: Wests Tigers set to sign Laurie Daley as halves coach
Fair enough. It has never sat well with me that we've seen our greats in other jerseys or polo shirts either. But I have come around to the Pigman way of thinking that these blokes are commodities and they just do what they have to in order to survive.

It’s a different era GE, unfortunately.
Would rather some ex-Raiders with actual creditable coaching success like Madge or Bellamy before getting worried about where Daley is.

I have no idea what GE is banging on about.
If your looking at anyone it's some up and comer from the Storm system, not some dinosaur from the 90's.
At the end of the day it's a halves coaching gig, a job for one of the boys.
This ain't the NFL where a QB coaching roll would actually mean something, this is the NRL a fairly basic and primitive game.
