I think you're right on both counts Neegz. A more mobile pack might allow more numbers in the tackle...

Jack making more tackles- if he's 5/8 we'd have half who can legitimately iron guys out, not just cling on for support to arrive and Papa or Tapine in the middle might help- Paulo and Boyd could both put on a shot, it's whether they did it enough or let down in other ways...

@neeegz

How can you say our defence was not to bad?
We conceded 540 points, which sits us as the 11th best team. The best defensive team and premiers conceded almost 200 points less then us.

Our defence is terrible, it has been for years.

Young Canberra Raiders forward Corey Horsburgh has sights on NRL debut

He's caught co-captain Josh Hodgson's eye as the Canberra Raiders player to watch and Corey Horsburgh has set his sights on making his NRL debut this year. But the big redheaded forward expects to start the season playing for Mounties in the NSW Cup.

"That's the goal [a debut] this year, but we'll see what happens. It's been going alright so far," he said. "We've got a really solid team this year and I'm just going to have to probably start in the NSW Cup and hopefully make my way up from there.

If Jack has been training at 6, has there been anyone other than Abbey training at 1?

I know they're only 'moments in time' but the majority of the photo gallery looks like blokes practising attacking football. God I hope they're spending plenty of time on defensive drills.

Canberra Raiders milestones to keep an eye on in 2019

2019 will see some of the NRL's finest achieve significant personal milestones.

Jarrod Croker is on track to become the first player under the age of 30 to score 2,000 points at NRL level. He also requires seven tries to overtake Jason Croker for most tries scored for the green machine. There are a number of players that are within reach of 100 games for the Raiders - Jordan Rapana, Sia Soliola and Joey Leilua.

Canberra Raiders co-captain Josh Hodgson backs NRL crackdown in good of game

Canberra Raiders co-captain Josh Hodgson says the NRL's crackdown on player behaviour is for the good of the game and it's up to all players to make a conscious effort to be better.

"They're clamping down on things and everything that's getting done is for the good of the game," Hodgson said. "I think everyone buys into that and everyone's only human, we're all going to make mistakes, but it's about trying to reduce those mistakes as much as we can.

I heard from a reliable source that BJ is in super condition and primed for a big year. Ricky has been relentless with him, even sending him home on one or two occasions for being 5-10 mins late , forcing him to train with the 20s in the afternoon. Some hard love might pay off.

Canberra Raiders world-class forward pack starting to take shape

How do you fit four world-class second-rowers into your forward pack? "I'll just hopefully be playing in the back row and pushing for that spot, but if he comes to me to play in the middle then that's what I'll have to do for the team then I'm going to do that," Elliott Whitehead said.

"I'd rather play 13 than centre if I had any choice at all, if I didn't play back row. I like being in the middle. It's probably more natural to me to play that position," John Bateman added.

Toughest preseason ever 2019

John Bateman is still adjusting to Australia’s hot temperatures as he trains with the Canberra Raiders

They were childhood mates in Bradford on the other side of the world and now Elliott Whitehead and John Bateman have been reunited in Canberra during a heatwave.

“It’s only his second week in and he’s done a lot of sleeping, you know, he hasn’t done much cooking or cleaning anyway, I know that,” Whitehead joked. “But yeah, he’s found his own place, but he’s moved just behind my backyard so it’s only a stone’s throw away.

New Canberra Raiders English recruit John Bateman's brutal baptism of fire

John Bateman's nose is testament to the baptism of fire the Raiders recruit has endured since arriving in Canberra. What looks like a cut is actually sunburn - the after effects of a brutal Australian summer, which included four consecutive days of 40-plus-degree heat.

"It's been very warm. The first couple of days I totally forgot about sunscreen and got absolutely burnt. I think I've learnt from that pretty quickly," Bateman said.

'Grubby' John Bateman to aid Canberra Raiders says Elliott Whitehead

Canberra signing John Bateman has a "grubby" side to go with his talent that will help the Raiders this NRL season, according to teammate and countryman Elliott Whitehead.

"Look he's very competitive. If you've watched him playing Super League, especially international-wise, he don't wanna lose," Whitehead said. "He's got that bit of grubby side about him as well. He's a tough kid, he's from one of the roughest estates in Bradford - he won't mind me saying that.

VIDEO: Hear from Canberra Raiders Elliott Whitehead and new England recruit John Bateman about how the 2019 season is shaping up

New Raiders recruit John Bateman says he's slowly finding his feet in the nation's capital. While he's wasted no time getting down to business with his new team mates, some of them may be struggling to understand his thick northern accent, WIN News Canberra reports.

Seriously, I have no idea what John Bateman was saying there at times!

VIDEO: Canberra Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead: He's eaten everything in my kitchen!

Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead has opened up on living with current Raiders and international teammate John Bateman as he helps the former Bradford Junior settle into life in Canberra.

"John's very competitive, if you've watched him play in the Super League and in international matches he never wants to lose, he's a tough kid," Whitehead said.

VIDEO: Canberra Raiders England recruit John Bateman: This is the opportunity I always wanted

John Bateman says he's settling into Canberra well as the forward prepares for his first season in the NRL.

"Yeah it's good, I'm still getting used to my surroundings and finding my way about although Elliott [Whitehead] has been helping me out," Bateman said.

Sam Williams hoping to make No.7 jersey his own at Canberra Raiders

Sam Williams is hopeful a settled combination will deliver his best football at a key stage of his career.

"I wouldn't say it feels different going into the season without Blake because this time of the year Ricky is really good with people who put their hand up regardless of what they've done before," Williams said. "You're trying to better yourself and whatever happens in round one is up to Ricky. You've got Ata [Hingano] coming back from injury and Jack [Wighton] training with us as well so there are options.

I like Sam. I like how he controls a game, and I like his subtly with the ball, his show and go, and level head. He's a real old school halfback.
If only he was a little bit bigger, and more aggressive.
Best half in NSW cup no doubt.

Agreed that he has some quality skills but his decision making is too slow IMO. The difference in intensity/speed of NSW cup and NRL is why he looks great in one whilst poor in the other.

Burning issues facing every NRL club ahead of 2019 season

Canberra Raiders

Will the Raiders settle on a halves pairing for the season? The partnership of Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin has been broken up with Austin leaving the club after a poor year. While the pair showed glimpses of brilliance they never fulfilled their potential. Jack Wighton looms as the front-runner while veteran Sam Williams remains an option. Another hopeful Ata Hingano will miss at least the first two months of the season because of a shoulder injury.
