Jack Wighton confirms switch to five eighth
Jack Wighton set for "shock" switch to five eighth in Canberra Raiders shake-up
Jack Wighton is expected to play alongside Aidan Sezer in a new-look halves pairing that will be out to lead the Raiders to just their second finals appearance in eight years.
Wighton has spent the pre-season training at No. 6 and is set to make the switch from fullback for Canberra’s season opener against the Titans on the Gold Coast.

I'd much prefer Williams and Wighton. Sezer doesn't have the kicking skill for this to function well IMO.

This is a good move , we have to change something. But and it is a big but , we need someone to cover Fullback , Cotric may be a year or so off if at all , Raps is half a year out so other than Wighton we don't have a fullback. We have to recruit or we are weakening a position too much to cover another.
Other than that I am a big fan for Jack to play 5/8

Any quotes from the Raiders? Or any talk of who will play fullback?

Re: Jack Wighton set for shock switch in Raiders shake-up
Sezer (like many of our other players) seems to suffer heavily when his confidence is down... He has had games where his kicking has been fantastic and others where his kicking has let us down. I'm anticipating the quality of his kicking game to be more consistent this year with Austin no longer in the team. There were many games over the past couple years where Sezer seemed to fade out as he got frustrated... hopefully this will occur less frequently if he's partnered with a half who will compliment his game more than clash with/cramp it. All defensive issues aside, the team's chemistry took a tumble after our run in 2016 and our new-look spine with Hodgson as captain and Wighton in the halves should (hopefully) patch that up a bit.

you'd have to imagine this means we want a new fullback?
we aren't moving cotric when rapana is out for half the season.

Exactly. I just want to hear something from the Raiders that adds fuel to the Edwards rumoursCJ42 wrote:you'd have to imagine this means we want a new fullback?

I didn't see anything last year from Cotric that gave me hope that fullback was the postion from him.. Not to say he can't get there eventually though

I’m pretty sure the Daily Telegraph has been reading this forum and made up the story from there.

The club doesn’t see Cotric as ready for fullback yet so either they’ve decided Abbey is ready for the role full-time (which would surprise me) or they’re confident Edwards is coming.

Will be happy to be proven wrong but the kicking looks exceptionally weak with this combo. If Hodgson does more that would help although his kicking game has been a bit down the past couple seasons also.edwahu wrote: ↑January 12, 2019, 7:16 pmHe can tackle though.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑January 12, 2019, 7:11 pm I'd much prefer Williams and Wighton. Sam's defensive stats were better than Sezer's in 2018. Re: Jack Wighton set for shock switch in Raiders shake-up
Is it exceptionally weaker than the combo of Austin/Sezer though? Austin had a big boot but his kicking wasn't exactly pinpoint as far as accuracy is concerned. I've seen Wighton put some decent kicks in over the years, I don't think we're gonna lose too much there tbh... I do agree that our kicking overall will be a weak point compared to most other teams but it's not like it's been a strength of ours in recent times.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑January 12, 2019, 10:21 pmWill be happy to be proven wrong but the kicking looks exceptionally weak with this combo. In the November article there were quotes from Croker, Thurston and Tongue about the possible position switch. More recently Oldfield played it down a bit, probably hosing down rumours of a new fullback until a deal is doneRick wrote:Exactly. I think there isn't much of a sample size for Jack's kicking. He is naturally talented so he could pick it up pretty quickly.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑January 12, 2019, 10:21 pmWill be happy to be proven wrong but the kicking looks exceptionally weak with this combo. The kicking issue is a massive concern. More of it from Hodgo next year I suspect.
In saying that, Sezer can be bloody good if he does it consistently.

Williams was in most of last year so I think that masked it a bit. Sezer has gone backwards in that department so hopefully he can get back to what he was in 2016 and at the Titans. His obsession with kicking through the defensive line is one issue that could be solved easily.Raiders_Pat wrote: ↑January 13, 2019, 7:32 amIs it exceptionally weaker than the combo of Austin/Sezer though? In his previous stint at 6 he had an absolute led foot when putting in attacking kicks. I'm sure they'll be working on that weakness.edwahu wrote: ↑January 13, 2019, 8:01 amI think there isn't much of a sample size for Jack's kicking. Williams is strictly a back-up half. You bring him in when you have injuries in the halves. No other club would bring him in as a starting half and he shouldn't even be considered in the conversation.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑January 13, 2019, 8:16 amWilliams was in most of last year so I think that masked it a bit. Moving on from that, I was referring to solely the combo of Austin/Sezer, not games when Williams was playing alongside Austin or Sezer. I don't see a Wighton/Sezer combo as being particularly weaker in the kicking field compared to an Austin/Sezer combo. I do however see a multitude of other problems in a Williams/Sezer or Williams/Wighton combo as compared to Sezer/Wighton, issues much worse than any setbacks we will have due to kicking.

Clip on Wighton , last try around 3min shows a deft kick for a try.
The rest of the tries show why he should be fullback , Im so torn now .

My info was the club wouldn’t move Jack unless they got Edwards or someone similar. I think any combo of the 3 we can come up with would easily qualify for the worst 3 halves combos in the competition, as we have been the past two years.Raiders_Pat wrote: ↑January 13, 2019, 8:59 amWilliams is strictly a back-up half.
