I just don’t know if Ponga at 5/8th offers more than Ponga at fullback

3/4 line looks much stronger. Still an issue at 1 and 6. Whichever one Ponga plays leaves a gap at the other.

Surprised they didn't include Barnett in top 17.

I think they're a better side with Ponga at the back. He can still get his hands on the ball a few times during a set and his defensive workload is much less. He'd have backrowers running at him all game in the frontline. I don't know that Pearce and Ponga actually complement each other in the halves either.

Either Watson or Mann at 6 and agreed on Barnett, there has to be space in the 17 for him.

That's what I've seen too. Brown just seems happy to have a hooker that can feed the ball and defend well. I guess you have to make compromises somewhere given they have Pearce and Ponga in the halves, Klemmer at prop.

New culture for Newcastle: Knights impose whopping fines over bad behaviour

Jacob Saifiti has been slapped with a fine the equivalent of 25 per cent of his salary, under tough new sanctions imposed by the Knights. The club’s CEO Phil Gardner explained the rationale behind the eye-watering $50,000 fine ($25,000 suspended), saying the football committee was sending a clear message to the playing group.

Saifiti was involved in an altercation with Boyd Cordner’s brother Dane outside the Greenroof Hotel in Hamilton in December. The 22-year-old prop was knocked out in the fight and suffered a broken leg.

Oooof. Lost the fight, broke a leg and 25g's.
I wonder if this is a gentle push out the Newcastle door. Maybe he is excess?

Newcastle Knights centre Tautau Moga charged with common assault

The NRL has been hit with yet another off-field scandal with Newcastle centre Tautau Moga charged with common assault. Moga, 25, allegedly hit a taxi driver in Newcastle on Boxing Day and was subsequently charged by police on January 9. He will face court on March 21.

Does it ever end? I don't understand why these entitled **** continue to get themselves into these types of situations. Oh sorry, yes I do, the NRL is an organisation that enables this sort of behaviour.

K.Mann could possibly start the season @ hooker.

Pitchell Dearce, never heard of him. Pitchell Mearce perhaps, honestly I don't really care anymore.

I'm more interested in what Lindsey Pelas is up to these days.

I agree but it also highlights the ridiculousness of the situation. The knights can act strong by handing a large fine on the Saffiti boy and tearing up Mogas contract. Whilst covering up incident after incident of another high profile player who is integral to them having a winning season.

Kalyn Ponga to return to fullback for Newcastle Knights this week

The Kalyn Ponga five-eighth experiment is over for now, with Newcastle coach Nathan Brown to move the young star back to fullback for this week's clash with the Dragons.

Ponga confirmed on Monday he would be heading back to the No.1 jersey on Sunday against St George Illawarra but indicated he would like another crack at five-eighth at some stage.

Newcastle Knights cult hero Nathan Ross forced to medically retire at 30

Popular Knights winger Nathan Ross is set to be medically retired from the NRL. He underwent groin surgery in the off-season but has been unable to recover to get back to full fitness.

Ross’s contract is believed to be worth around $350,000 per season, and although it will be paid out in full, it will be a win for the Knights as it won’t be included in the club’s salary cap.
