Croker chasing rare record

Canberra Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker is 232 points away from becoming the first player under 30 to score 2000 points at the Telstra Premiership level. Croker has until September 2020 to break the overall record of youngest player to reach 2000 points, set by Jason Taylor at Parramatta in 2001. He's also seven tries away from becoming Canberra's all-time leading try-scorer.

A converted try in round one will see Canberra achieve the milestone of 20,000 points scored since entering the premiership in 1982.

That’s some amazing collation of stats, I haven’t seen that before.

But I can’t find a total number of points conceded in the history of the team?

The vital spine positions for NRL clubs in season 2019

RAIDERS

Before Jack Wighton got himself in strife he was the Raiders’ best in 2018. And when Josh Hodgson returned from injury, well, you don’t have to talk Hodgson up. But the big question still hangs over halves, Aidan Sezer and Sam Williams.

If the Raiders were satisfied they wouldn’t have chased Shaun Johnson. Williams always gives his best but the onus here is on Sezer. We know what the Raiders can do when they’re on. But Sezer needs to show he can close out games when things aren’t going Canberra’s way.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Didn't Tilse try and charge down a field goal and it bounced off his arms and went over. Maybe I'm getting muddled because when I played rugby one of my teammates was charging down a conversion and it ricocheted off his arms and went over - would have missed otherwise.

Trimmed down pack could make Canberra Raiders backs more dangerous

The Canberra Raiders' trimmed-down, more-mobile pack could have the flow-on effect of making their already lethal outside backs even more dangerous.

"What we've lost in punch we've gained in mobility. I'm excited to see how that plays out, the way we play," Michael Oldfield said. "More fast, upbeat footy, which will be exciting, especially for us backs. We like playing that off-the-cuff, flat-and-fast footy."

Stat to fix: Canberra Raiders halves need to offer more with the boot

Those in the nation's capital have been left scratching their heads over the past two seasons with the side's inability to close out games.

There are two stats to fix in 2019. Canberra finished the 2018 season behind Penrith as the most penalised team in the competition with 9.4 conceded per game. The Raiders struggled with the boot last season to average 393.8 kick metres per game in 2018, ranked 15th. Only Manly fared worse.

Yeah and another thing; kick distance will be shorter if you continually dominate field position.

Look at those top kicking distance sides....Parra and Tigers top 4.

Stats can be useful, they can also be downright useless without perspective.

Never see the point in the kick metres stat really. It's adversely affected by so many things.
The Raiders have improved their completions, they ranked fifth in 2018 on 77 per cent, the benchmark being 78 per cent.

However, the Raiders kick less than other teams. They ranked 16th in the NRL for average kicks per match (15.4) last year. The Tigers and Eels averaged 19 or more, and the Roosters and Broncos were close to 19. The Raiders ranked 14th for average kicking metres per match (380), the Sea Eagles and Cowboys kick more, but gain fewer kick metres.

The Raiders focus on weighted kicks... but they're the worst team in the league for forced line drop outs.

Do the Raiders kick less and get less kicking metres because they are getting more running metres than other teams? No. They ranked 15th for running metres per match (1326). Only the Knights averaged fewer running metres. The Rabbitohs were the benchmark with 1452 metres gained on average per match. The Raiders were last for kick return metres to boot.

The Raiders don't dominate possession in the opposition's 20. They ranked mid table. Not that this stat necessarily co-relates with success. The three teams with the least were the Broncos, Roosters and Warriors... the three with the most were the Cowboys, Panthers and Eels.

How do they score points? They don't offload more than others (ranked 11th), don't pass more than others, their focus is on dummy half running. Where the Raiders do have a relative strenght is their tackle breaks and line breaks primarily from the outside backs. They ranked second for both. They score points through the strike power of the backs.

It'd be good to have some more detailed stats... but, my conclusion from all that is that a better kicking game would help the Raiders... and it's worthy of some focus.

Exactly right Goldcoast Raider. We score a heap of tries. What we don't do is defend well after we have scored a try. All too often we either concede a try or the opposition are into our half all too easily. I'd love to see us defend the way the Chooks did in the Grand Final. They drove the Storm backwards with 'attacking defence' all through that match. Storm could not gain any attacking rythm. If we are to learn anything from how the Competition winner performed it was that stout, committed defence will get the opposition frustrated and greatly improves the possibility of a win. There was a stat some months ago on 'run meters conceded' and the Raiders were poor. Fixing the D is the biggest thing Sticky and co have to do in 2019.

It’s stupid penalties on the 4th or 5th tackle when we are trapping them in there own half that are killing us, our defence in there half is pretty good, it’s our defence 20 to 10 that’s our Achilles heel

Improving the kicking game doesn’t necessarily improve the point scoring. We score points due to our tackle and line breaking backs, regardless.

But that’s not to say it wouldn’t help to improve the kicking game. The Raiders concede heaps of metres (click the link above to the stats). We don’t start sets in the best place on the field, and then we can’t defend. It puts the defence under more pressure than need be. And this is where we’re losing games.

Our kicking also doesn’t build pressure on the opposition’s defence... no repeat sets and we can’t match other teams in that department. Instead of their defence being tired out... it is ours.

We rank 14th in possession share. A better kicking game could lift it... and might well make the difference for a team that lost eight matches by six points or less.

I agree a better kicking game would help the raiders but that would be borne out by repeat sets, touch finders, kicking try assists. Kicking metres really doesn't tell you anything at all on it's own and to get to a point where it is approaching useful we need to look at comparisons in completions, possession, running metres and so on. However, the kick metres stat is usually just talked about in a vacuum by itself.

Thanks for taking the extra time to look into it.

The six NRL players under the most pressure to perform in 2019

AIDAN SEZER (CANBERRA)

Sezer has signed a two-year extension keeping him in Canberra until the end of 2020 but the Raiders need more from their marquee five-eighth. After starring in his maiden season in 2016, Sezer’s standards have dropped. The former Titans playmaker has proven he can play but the Green Machine need to see his best week-in week-out.

To be honest, our defence was not too bad for a large part, plenty of brain fades and I think it's due to a simple thing like no one talking because they are gassed.
We must be last ranked for forced line drop outs, or kicking in the clear... those sorts of things give guys an extra few seconds to get wind back, And an extra set can take that 2% out of the opposition, when we need to win a close one.

And after watching a few older games recently, we just don't hit hard enough, or with numbers often enough

The kpi is around absorb the runner hold him up put him down giving your defence time to set. If you knock them down too quick they get up too quick.
