One week into the off season and no reports of Raider player atrocities in the media. The Dogs have it all to themselves. If there is anything to come from Jacks dilemma, it may have been a salutary lesson to the other players in the squad.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Souths v Storm match. I hope next year it will be a lime green jersey I'm watching rather Myrtle.

My prediction is we will win at least half of the first four games. We will play one out footy with minimal errors. We will start to lose after 4 rounds, get injuries and by mid season we will have some conflict and be unlikely to make the semis. The media will turn on Stuart. Raiders wont get rid of him unless they have to. will miss the semis 2019

We have five current test players from the three top-tier countries.

That’s actually a pretty bloody good platform of quality players when you think about it. It’s just a shame only one of them is in a spine position.

Also worth keeping in mind that 2nd choice Australian players are better than a lot of 1st picked players from the other top-tier nations.

Yeah, only Papalii would make the Australian side at the moment. Hodgo makes Origin if eligible, maybe Rapana but they would probably overlook him. Roosters will have 5 - 7 Origin players next year, plus Cronk and 3 kiwi players, one of which would be playing Origin if eligible (JWH).

Even Dragons have 5 Origin players and both their Poms would make it, which is a bit over the top for how little they have achieved.

Some interesting stats on post contact metres:

The Sydney Roosters led the charge for the team gaining the most post-contact metre made per carry, averaging 3.19. Canberra ranked second, averaging 3.16 post-contact metres per run, with Manly third on 3.09.

Although the Raiders had no problems busting through the opposition this season, they struggled to contain teams when defending which resulted in them conceding the most post contact metres per carry, averaging 3.11.

Josh Papalii ranked eighth for most post contact metres per game, the only Raider on the list.

What an indictment to soft defence GE. The eye test tells me it doesn't matter where the opposition gets the ball more often than not they are a threat to our line. Now the stats confirm how bad we are at conceding meters post contact.

Who is the X-factor for your NRL team in 2019?

RAIDERS: AIDAN SEZER

Since he arrived in Canberra in 2016, Sezer has struggled to put it all together for a lengthy period. There have been good games and good patches, but he’s yet to fulfil his considerable potential.

As Sezer prepares for his eighth season in first grade it is reasonable to question if he ever will, but Canberra chose him over Blake Austin when the duo came off contract in 2018 and if the Raiders are to return to semi-final football there can be no more waiting.

NRL 2019: Nine playmakers under pressure ahead of 2019 season

AIDAN SEZER

With Blake Austin now at Warrington, Sezer and Sam Williams will likely form Canberra’s playmaking duo in 2019. But with Sezer the bigger name of the two, the Raiders will be looking to him to take charge of the team.

The Green Machine were criticised in 2018 for failing to close out games, so the pressure will be on their halves to ensure that trend doesn’t continue.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

It's hard to know what impact Austin's departure will have on Sezer and the rest of the squad but IMO Austin was our biggest liability in 2017 and 2018.

That should be worth some improvement provided we don't go backwards elsewhere.

Starting to read more articles putting pressure on Sezer and Ricky, which amazingly were mostly absent in the past.

I’ll back you in here, S82, and say the pressure will be a positive.

Could be more in hope than anything RD, but I think we might see a situation similar to when Carney was punted. Sezer seems to step up when he's given more responsibility.

Fingers crossed.

Predictions for Raiders in 2019

Predicted regular season finish: 12th.

Canberra vowed to learn from 2017 season but instead put in a carbon copy of it in 2018 with the Green Machine finishing 10th in both campaigns. It is hard to believe Stuart can turn things around, especially if he continues playing blokes out of position, so the Green Machine faithful should expect another tough season.

But one piece of good news is superstar young gun Nick Cotric will continue the incredible start to his career and break into the NSW Blues team.
