I can tell you one thing... John Bateman hasn't been recruited to start on the bench. It is probably not far off...

Pretty good guess by NRL.com standards. I think GE has the right side, with Sia and Lui probably swapping and for my own sanity I have to believe that Ricky will pick Guler over L.Bateman.

The hardest to predict is the prop rotations, a fine line between who could be starting and the guy that misses the 17. I'd probably have Luke Bateman as my 18 depending on pre season training.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
I'll take GE's preferred side. We have to try something in the halves.
Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Luke Bateman should be no where near the 17... Guler over Bateman any day!
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
I think GE’s preferred side is going to end up being the plan B
I absolutely think Stuart is dense enough to think and hope they can run it back with a spine listed in the NRL preview and wait until we’re 6 weeks into a season and try and change on the fly
Hope I’m wrong though. I don’t think moving Wighton is ideal (the ideal move would have been to sack him and replace him with a better spine player) but I’ve seen enough of Sam Williams and poor defensive halves
Even if he kills it in preseason and maybe even starts hot in the season proper. We know where a Sam Williams - Aiden Sezer pairing is ultimately going to land us

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Ricky will probably pull some sort of surprise between now and kick off. If he does what we expect he isn't shoving it in our faces.
Looking back at his round 1 sides
2014 - Jack at 6 and Allwood at center
2015 - Bateman randomly appears on the bench
2016 - No big surprises, except maybe Vaughan off the bench. The named side did have Austin on the bench.
2017 - Cotric (full credit, this one was a good one), Priest a starting prop
2018 - Sezer the bench hooker (apologies for those who had blacked it out)

I haven’t seen enough of O’hagan to know if he is ready but I do know that Sezer and Williams is not the answer.
I also don’t see Cotric as a fullback so would rather leave Wighton at the back.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
J Bateman on the bench.
We need to play to our strengths which is not in the halves, the rest of the squad is very talented.
Sezer and Williams are serviceable and have enough first grade experience know. Wighton has been supported by the club and its time he repays the faith.
No excuses next year, this team should be striving for top 4.

Upgrade him to a full contract. We don’t win the comp with Sezer and Williams in the halves. Play the kid and get him 20 odd games under his belt.greeneyed wrote:We can't play O'Hagan. He's a development player.

His defense isn't great in his own age group and was woeful in the Under 20's Origin. It would be worse than Williams in first grade.RTW wrote: ↑December 27, 2018, 12:48 pmUpgrade him to a full contract. We don’t win the comp with Sezer and Williams in the halves. Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
For once, the NRL tipsters are actually pretty close.
The 17 is very close, just switch L. Bateman and Guler. And, add Horsbough to the extended bench.
I agree with the concensus, all 4 of our international backrowers will start. The Q is, how do they line up? IMO, I see Ricky running with Smelly at 13. However, Id rather see our 2 big bodies, Papa and Tarpz in the middle, with the very mobile Poms on the edges.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
My sense is Ricky will be hoping on the changes in the forward pack being the difference. Like most I think Bateman will start, probably at lock with Papa wearing the number 8 or 10.
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
I would start with Lui and have Sutton on the bench, but other than that, I think you have it right Dusty. (Pending any signings we are unaware of).
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Yes, I don't think Sutton starts until he gets into the groove of the NRL. He wasn't starting in Super League and he's still pretty young.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Sutton isn't starting. Not a snowflakes chance. Lui will be starting up front and Soliola gives us experience off the bench.
With Rapana out, moving Wighton out of fullback is a bad idea. He was arguably the form fullback in the comp before getting his marching orders. Stuart would be nuts to move him and put some numpty back there in a vain attempt to plug a defensive hole in the halves.
Sezer is a serviceable defender in the halves. Williams is no worse than Austin at his shirt grabbing, run out of the line worst. Defend John Bateman alongside Williams and make sure they communicate. Wighton is there as a last line both sides of the field.

I don't care what number they wear on their back, just get the best 17.
I rate J Bateman he is a winner and will make a big impact.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
It depends on the injury status of players in our squad,
'Currently clubs must apply for special dispensation to add a development player to their first grade squad, typically an injury crisis that sees them lose all other options in that select player's position.' (Quote from Dan Walsh, NRL.com reporter on 10/8/18).
We start the season with Hingano out injured. That leaves us light in the No.7 position. Hopefully our halves perform well and stay healthy.
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Yeah i think Sutton is a prime candidate to get that VINTAGE Stuart middle third garbage stuff at the end of a game to see how he handles it.
Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
But with Aidan Sezer and Sam Williams fit for Round 1, there is Buckley's and none of the NRL agreeing to allowing a development player playing NRL. Though as I recall, it is easier after half way through the season. But if there are two experienced halves fit... even if not and there's a stop gap NRL player who could take the role (Wighton, Whitehead etc), a development player won't get approval to play.RedRaider wrote: ↑December 27, 2018, 6:42 pmIt depends on the injury status of players in our squad,

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Anyone suggesting Stuart will start a kid in lieu of Williams in the halves is in fairyland.
Wighton may have been an option at 6 if Rapa was fit, or if we had a vaguely serviceable replacement at fullback, which in our system is arguably the second most important position on the field outside dummy half. That's not the case, so shifting Wighton would be a bad idea IMO.
Rooting the back 3 in a vain attempt to get a 10% improvement in defence in the halves is crazy. Just surround Williams with half decent defenders and make sure he holds his line, unlike Austin.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Sam Williams can hold his line all he likes
There is going to be 2-3 times every game where he’s going to get isolated on the goal line 1 on 1. Even bad halves can do that a few times a game
And unless we can trust Sam Williams to hold up and consistently make stops every game, the problems in defence are going to continue. If Sam Williams is surrendering tries regularly, we’ve seen that even the second best attack in the game won’t compensate for that

I don't really see the point of putting Cotric at centre. If we're going to shift him... I'd rather it was to fullback... He's talented enough to become a top fullback IMO. And you put your best players in the key positions.
Also... Whitehead can be an emergency five eighth during a match... but he can't play there full time IMO.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
I agree regarding Whitehead as a fulltime 6 but this is about our team for Round 1. I think it would be unfair to start J. Bateman and Sutton anywhere but their preferred positions while they find their feet in the NRL. Remembering Whitehead in his first few rounds I think it would not be in the best interests of J. Bateman to play him in the middle during the hottest part of the season.greeneyed wrote: ↑December 28, 2018, 12:22 pm I don't really see the point of putting Cotric at centre. I also think Wighton may end up at 6 this year but after missing so much football I think starting him in a familiar position will benefit his reintegration. As for Cotric at fullback, I won't say he can't make a fist of it. I actually thought his future may lay there at one point last season but his passing game is a very long way off cutting it as an NRL fullback. His best attribute is his hole running. Centre will always be his best position, I feel it is time to bite the bullet and move him there permanently. Croker will be just as good on a wing for us - I kind of feel this potential move played a part in the coach making Hodgson co-captain.

Re: What's your predicted Round 1 2019 team?
Yes, Sammy will get steam rolled a few times this yr.Pigman wrote: ↑December 28, 2018, 11:13 am Sam Williams can hold his line all he likes
