Canberra Raiders: Bid to develop young players in Fiji

CANBERRA Raiders Fiji is conducting clinics and is focusing on the development of players in the junior level. The Australian rugby league club that is based in Canberra established their academy in the country a year ago as part of their recruitment drive.

Canberra Raiders Fiji coordinator Taniela Vakamoce said the current focus of the academy was to focus on students in the primary school level as it was an important approach in winning elite players.

You know what we should do? Endorse the Fiji NSW Cup side, help them get into the comp, then have them as our feeder club.

It would be nothing but positives. We would get first dibs on a country of talent, and we would be able to top them up with our own. What player wouldn’t want to be based in Fiji

Bit of a hike for the Canberra based players.

We could have two feeders, the Broncos have like 10.

Hāwera teenager Manny Snooks signs rugby league deal with the Canberra Raiders juniors

A South Taranaki teen will soon head off to Australia to chase his rugby league dream with the Canberra Raiders. Manny Snooks,17, who plays second row/lock, will fly to the Australian capital on November 1 and straight into pre-season training with the Raiders SG Ball squad. He hopes to go on to play Under 20s.

Snooks said a few teams including the Melbourne Storm, North Queensland Cowboys and NZ Warriors were chasing him but in the end Canberra won out.

"I like the team environment and a few guys from up north and NZ are there playing there, some in first grade," he said. "We gelled really well together and there was a real sense of brotherhood there."

Check out www.wavellrugbyleague.com

If you scroll down to the presentation photos he was the joint winner of player of the year with Josh James (broncos contracted halfback).

He was a standout at the State titles for Met North who won it this year. Josh won player of the carnival but Manase would have been very close. As also stated he was selected for QLD schoolboys.

Wavell got knocked out by the eventual winners of the GIO cup PBC in the QLD semi final. You should be able to find that game somewhere if you want to watch him. Just skip the first 15min as PBC dominated early.

He is very quick and strong but not tall. If you had to compare him to someone I would throw out names like Ben Barba, Matt Bowen etc.

Canberra Raiders coaching staff assisting Riverina and Monaro players

Ricky Stuart, Brett White and Andrew McFadden were on hand last weekend to help train Under 16 and Under 18 teams in the Riverina and Monaro academies.

"It's so important for us," McFadden said. "We definitely want to have that connection with Country Rugby League. That's our bread and butter. It's where we want our kids coming from, they're locals and we really want to strengthen that relationship."

SG Ball side had a dominant win over the Eels winning 9 tries to 5. Eels commentators noticed a size discrepancy. Sounds like the Raiders will have advantage.

HM side unfortunately went down 11 tries to 5 against a star studded Eels side.

Raiders miss signature of Solomoni Naiduki

Ratu Kadavulevu School rugby Under-18 centre Solomoni Naiduki has signed a three-year deal with the National Rugby League side Paramatta Eels. Initially there were talks for the Matacula villager from Tailevu signing with Canberra Raiders.

“Solomoni has signed a three years deal with Paramatta Eels and we are proud of his achievement and I know he is going there for exposure,” Naiduki said.
