Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
There aren't hundreds of TPJs. Point me at an equally talented forward we have had at his age in the last 10 seasons outside Papalii.
You can't spin this result as anything but a failure from any angle.

Todd whatsisname from Temora, Michael Weyman, Patrick Mago. TPJ may be better than all of them, and is showing some signs of being so, but he has not yet reavhed the top. Like Mago he may finish up nowhere.
I'mnot attempting to spin anything for anyone, just trying to put some facts into the narrative. TPJ was given plenty of chances in Canberra, he just didn't get himself into the right shape to take them.

Thank god for Tapine
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I know the issues he had, but I am tired of us having our own narratives to support so many talented players not realising their talent for us. We need to find a way to get the best out of players regardless of the individual issues they have.Cranky Old Man wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 12:55 pm Todd whatsisname from Temora, Michael Weyman, Patrick Mago. That makes two!Cranky Old Man wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 12:36 pm I didn't think TPJ would make it in the NRL. I had seen hundreds of players like him before, absolute whizkids at levels where natural talents were all that was required but without the drive and absolutely insane level of self centered dedication to fitness and health including but not limited to diet and rehabilitation.
Stuart was always aware of his level of talent. He had spoken about it to me and others on occasions. But he was aware of and frustrated about the lack of effort that TPJ continued to display. Stuart was of the opinion that unless TPJ pulled up his socks soon, the opportunities open to him would soon dissipate and he would be lost to the game. Stuart was strongly of the opinion that the loss of TPJ would be a loss to the NRL as well as to the Raiders.
TPJ was given a chance to turn his life around at Brisbane by Bennett, and has done so. Well done him. But to imply that he was not given the chance at the Raiders, nor given the specialist help and encouragement of the entire organisation is dishonest and reflects poorly on him.
Personally i never saw one second of football from TPJ that gave me the impression he wouldnt make it.
He looked like a guy who's floor was going to be a 10 year NRL player every second i watched him play.
And there is no implication that he was not given a fair chance at this club, it's fact as far as im concerned. That's not hindsight, i was saying it in the moment. And i was far from the only one. A lot of us were saying it

TBH, Mago looked nearly as good as TPJ in u20s, captained that side from memory, and the jr rep teams. Those 2 tore it up for us. these days, Mago looks a very avg NRL player. Which means he was really dominant due to size, not ability.Pigman wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 1:07 pmThat makes two!Cranky Old Man wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 12:36 pm I didn't think TPJ would make it in the NRL. HOWEVER...
As I mentioned earlier, how many forwards have you seen go through a game and not be tackled? TPJ nearly did that in an u20s game. You could see that his offloading ability was ridiculously good, and this was his edge. The bumping off players thing was too easy at that level because he was bigger than everyone else, which happens with lots of big players, as mentioned with Mago above. That said, you could see the class of TPJ even then.
Remember the young tyro that was Jason Taumalolo? Remember the wraps he was getting? That was the same for TPJ. Took both these guys a couple of years to grow, figure out their body, and, most importantly, work out the mind set required to figure out that they could dominate at the highest level.
So, Ricky may have taken a punt on negative motivation to get him focused, BUT, it backfired massively.

Cooper Bambling wasn't lost to an NRL team, he was released mid season and is back with the Mackay Cutters.InFernos_Raiders wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 2:39 pmBrambling is one and now if you are a Raiders fan you should already know this now go do the research and see who the other player is.greeneyed wrote: ↑September 6, 2018, 4:16 amFirst I’ve heard of it. NRL 360 saying that TPJ has now been offered $800,000 by the Broncos... and my mail is that's $200,000 more than they were offering before. Plus he's only going to commit for only one year, while Bennett is at the club.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
That’s a fair bit for a guy with his experience.
Let’s imagine the club had money to spend on a forward (that we didn’t need for a half). How’s TPJ’s $800K compare to these options (using Zero Tackle’s figures):
Crichton - $1M
Taumalolo- $1M
Sam Burgess - $1M
Gillet - $750K
Merrin - $750K
Tamou - $750
James - $700K
Napa - $700K
Paulo - $700K
J. Trbojevic - $700K
Boyd - $600K
Tariq Sims - $500K
Tapine - $500K
Haas - $500K
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I'd have him 3rd or 4th on that list, so 800k sounds right. He is already about 6th in ability but you pay for the upside.I wouldn't be upset if we dropped a million on him.
That's also what those players are on, not what we could sign them for. Add 30% for the younger players.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
He's well up the list but as I said earlier in this discussion those hamstring issues are concerning for such a young guy, who relies on an explosive (power) game.
I actually thought we signed Tapine for about the 700k mark?

Shoving it in your face since 2017
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I think it was 500k but we know that we upgrade players all the time and permanently based on playing rep footy, so I would think he is on more like 700k.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
On those figures quoted, Merrin and Tamou are overvalued for mine, well past their best. Crichton is not yet worth $1m and may never be and Napa is such a mad dog I would be leery of spending too much on him for fear he would do something completely idiotic and get a six month or more suspension.
Taumalolo is worth his $1m, and TPJ has the raw ability to join him, but he is not there yet.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I don't think any forward (outside a 9) is worth $1million. It's such a large chunk of the cap tied up in a single player. It didn't guarantee success for the Cowboys. I think it is far too much for a player like Crichton. I'm glad the Raiders didn't try to match the offers to Boyd and Paulo. If the Broncos have paid $800k for TPG I think that is way overs as well.
Many of these forwards are only 40 - 60 minute players. The game goes for 80.

$1m for Angus Crichton? Sury that's not accurate.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
It's really not overs. If we don't pay that sort of money we get a squad without elite talent and elite talent is what win you comps. You should be able to afford a couple of million dollar players under a well managed cap.
