Canberra Raiders linked to Sydney Roosters Ryan Matterson

Mole linking us to Ryan Matterson this morning... thoughts?

Canberra Raiders one of four clubs interested in snaring Sydney Roosters back rower Ryan Matterson

The Canberra Raiders are one of four clubs looking at lanky Roosters back-rower Ryan Matterson for 2019. Despite some strong showings for the Roosters this year, Matterson has been told he is free to explore his options for next season even though he is still under contract. The Rabbitohs, Tigers, Sharks and Raiders are all believed to be interested.

Decent signing at this point. As a 5/8th he won't be the most creative option but he will bring stability and solid defense.

I'd be surprised if we can get him ahead of Souths though.

And it would free up money in the Roosters cap for them to sign Taupau.

Everybody wins....

He played a lot of halves coming through though right? I see he played halfback for the junior kangaroos in 2014(Munster and Hastings were on the bench)

I suppose he does what Wighton would do at 5/8 whilst being able to keep jack at fullback(defend, run, limited Kicking etc)
Not the worst option in the world but I’m not sure it really moves the needle on our premiership hopes

Matterson was on fire until he got injured mid season. Would be an awesome pickup although as someone said, there is a giant Crighton sized hole at South's that needs filling

Mostly starting second row with a few games at 5/8th.
To start the yr is was mostly backrow.
Then the concussions issues happened.
When he returned there was a bit of 5/8.
Finished the yr off the bench playing edge and/ or lock.

Can play centre too. So it would be a very versatile buy. Not really the kind of player we need, BUT, he would make his tackles at 6, that's for sure.

Do you think that wold be a similar statistic to Austin when we signed him?? I recall him playing most of his time as a bench utility...

My Roosters supporting mates say that as a defensive 5/8 he's outstanding, but doesn't offer anything in way of creativity.

If Sezer and Hodgson do the playmaking, this could be a shrewd call.

co-worker said he's the guy he's happy to lose as a chooks fan, doesn't do enough at 6 or in the pack to justify starting

He was at the Eels in NYC when Sticky was in charge so they'd probably know each other.

At the moment I am reasonably optimistic Williams, Wighton, Hodgo and Sezer can provide the opportunities for our edges. It's our middle where we were really let down this year and that's where we need to be spending what ever money we have left.

Canberra Raiders linked to Sydney Roosters Ryan Matterson

Post by Postman Pat »

I’d take him as 5/8, all he really needs to do offer early ball and actually defend his spot. Sezer and Hodgo can kick and Jack has a big boot. We won’t miss Austin’s kicking game.

He was my worst supercoach signing ever. Was a stud for the first 10 weeks (ton of base stats from tackles, hit ups etc). I took my medicine and purchased him for top dollar for him to be knocked out within 10 mins from friendly fire. Didn't play another game for about 10 rounds despite being named for most weeks. I heard rumours about behavioural issues contributing here but I think it was just speculation. I remember he killed it a 5/8 for city after playing about 5 first grade games... For what it's worth I reckon he would be a good signing. Good ball runner (not Austin good) and solid defender (not Austin bad).. Which is what we need to improve on. That said, not a player to break the bank for. He'd need to be coming for the opportunity not the dollars

I think he’d be a handy pickup - he’s a big body and seems to defend pretty well. Plenty of talent there and has many years of first grade footy ahead of him

worth a throw at the dart board.
If he can defend well as a half, that'll make a pretty significant impact on the team. Our season is over right now primarily because Blake Austin and Sam Williams cant defend to an NRL standard.

I'd think he would cost us in the 500k range. At least it might mean we have a bit of cash.

I reckon there's a 30% Raiders tax for recruiting any player in demand at the moment.

We are in the market for a fringe utility first grader with past concussion issues from the Roosters, yes we have signed others but not big names.

The Roosters sign:

Ryan Hall, English international,
Crichton from Souths
Brett Morris seasoned SOO and International in twilight but goes well still

Re sign Victor Radley, Boyd Cordner, Jake Friend, Luke Keary, Isaac Liu, Joseph Manu, Latrell Mitchell.

This year signed Cooper Cronk and Tedesco.

Its wrong and the $ should be more public so there is NO WAY the cap can be manipulated, no TPA's.

Its killing the game and the passion of many fans

I sort of agree but also think that our defensive issues go far deeper than one player. We struggle in every facet of defence - we either have zero control of the ruck or give away silly penalties for obvious holding. Our line speed is often non existent. The opposition then gets a roll on, and that puts huge pressure on our edge defenders. I have never seen a side require their halves and second rowers to make as many one on one tackles as we do (I remember a stat somewhere that said Whitehead had made the most one on one tackles in the league).

Unless we can control the ruck better and improve our line speed, bringing in a big body like Matterson will only help so much.

What's the difference? They'll just lie.

Does anyone really think that Milford knocked back the deal we put to him just so he could play under the amazing Wayne?
