Round 24 2018. Canberra Raiders 24 - South Sydney Rabbitohs 12. The Raiders defeated a minor premiership contender for the second week in a row - and in fine fashion. Canberra was missing Jarrod Croker, Aidan Sezer and Jack Wighton... but Canberra finally seems to have found a winning forumula. It was determined, courageous football from the Green Machine, in the final home game for Blake Austin, Shannon Boyd and Junior Paulo. The Rabbitohs started the match on fire, but Canberra controlled possession and gradually got themselves back into the contest. And in the second half, the Green Machine dominated, running in three tries.

2018 Round 24 Canberra Raiders V South Sydney Rabbitohs

More on Round 24: As I saw it

The Raiders travel to Auckland for a meeting with the New Zealand Warriors for their final match of the season. The Canberra Raiders are unchanged from the team that defeated the Rabbitohs. It will be the last game in green for Blake Austin, Junior Paulo and Shannon Boyd. For the Warriors, Gerard Beale (hamstring) replaces Leivaha Pulu on the bench, with five-eighth Blake Green still out with a calf injury.

Late changes: The Canberra Raiders omitted Aidan Sezer and Makahesi Makatoa from their squad on Friday night. Jack Murchie and Liam Knight remain on the extended bench. For the Warriors, Bunty Afoa moves to starting prop in place of James Gavet, who drops out. Karl Lawton drops off the Warriors extended bench.

History: Canberra has won 21 of 39 games against the Warriors. The recent record is fairly good, with the Raiders winning four of the past five matches. But before that, Canberra lost five matches in a row - and the Warriors scored 50 or more points in three of those contests. In 2017, the Raiders won 20-8 at Canberra - and backed that up in the rain at Auckland, winning 36-16. Earlier this year, in Round 3 at Canberra Stadium, the Raiders suffered a heart breaking, last gasp, one point loss. The Raiders have won just seven of 18 games played at Mt Smart Stadium, and seven of 19 games in Auckland. They have won nine of 21 games played in New Zealand.

2017 Round 23 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

2017 Round 7 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

2016 Round 20 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

In this week's "History Happens" we go back to Round 11 of 2003 when the Raiders took their home game against the Warriors to Wellington's "Cake Tin". It was an 18-10 victory for the "home" team, in a year when the Raiders were surprising everyone. Unfortunately, the Warriors would win the next two contests between the clubs in 2003, including the 17-16 finals victory over Canberra - which saw the Raiders eliminated from the play offs.

2003 Round 11 Canberra Raiders V New Zealand Warriors

Form: The Warriors have won three of their past five games, with recent losses to bottom eight teams, the Bulldogs and Titans. They recorded a 36-16 win over the Panthers in their last start, securing a top eight placing with the victory. The Raiders have a LLLWW record, winning back to back matches against a premiership contender, after a four game losing streak.

Betting: The Warriors are $1.53 favourites in the match, with the Raiders paying $2.50. The Raiders have 4.5 points start in the line betting.

Stat attack: It is a clash between eighth (Warriors) and 10th (Raiders) on the competition ladder. Canberra has a 10 and 13 record in 2018, while the Warriors are 14 and nine. Canberra has played 11 matches against top eight teams and won two. The Warriors have won six of 13 matches against top eight sides.

The Raiders are ranked first in the NRL for total points (547) and tries (91) scored in 2018. The Warriors rank 10th in the league for points (452) and equal ninth for tries (77) scored. The Raiders average around 24 points (four tries) per match, compared with 20 (three tries) for the Warriors. The Warriors, however, have the better defence. They rank sixth in the NRL in defence, conceding 19 points and three tries per match. The Raiders rank fourth worst in defence. They let in an an average of 23 points and four tries per match.

The Raiders remain the only team in the bottom eight with a positive points differential (+27), and still have a better points differential than three teams above them (Tigers -42, Warriors +21, Broncos +24).

The two teams both average 28 complete sets and eight incomplete sets - completing at 78 per cent. However, the Warriors average more runs (169-157), more running metres (1544m-1453m per match) and more kicking metres (446m-389m per match). The Warriors make nine errors per match, compared with 10 for the Warriors, while both average around nine penalties per match. The Raiders receive around 8.5 penalties per match, the Warriors eight. The Warriors make more offloads (13-9 per match on average), while the Raider make slightly more line breaks (5-4 per match).

The two team have a tackle efficiency rate of around 90 per cent (Warriors missing 36 of 364 tackles required on average per match, the Raiders missing 34 of 339).

Our tip: The Raiders have surprised both the Roosters and the Rabbitohs in the past two weeks, finally posting some victories over a top eight team. Sadly, it is too late, but Canberra has shown some pluck late in the season. They have completed well, relieving the pressure on their defence, and providing a good platform for their attack. They have learned to win despite missing some key players, like Jarrod Croker, Aidan Sezer, Joe Tapine an Jack Wighton, to injury and suspension.

The Warriors can play an expansive style, and that has proven to be troublesome for Canberra's defence in the past. Canberra won their last match against the Warriors in Auckland, but have lost three of the past five games in New Zealand's biggest city. It is going to be tough to make it three victories in a row against top eight opposition, but there could easily be an upset. This one will really depend on which Raiders and Warriors teams "turn up on the day". Both teams have been fairly inconsistent. I've got a gut feel, the Raiders can do it. Raiders by six.

What they're saying:

Junior Paulo: "We’ve had some good debutants this year, Jack Murchie got a chance, and especially Emre Guler, who has really established himself within the group. We know where he stands in the group and it’s definitely something to build towards for next year for the playing group."

80th Min: The ref was about to blow the whistle until the pocket ref has come in, seems like they checking for a block play, this could well be a penalty to the Raiders.

AND IT IS A PENALTY TO THE RAIDERS, Canberra take safe option and take the tap for the final play.
