Go back to the first week of this forum and people have SBW signed sealed and delivered. This time it's different though.

He'll go to Newcastle
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

I agree with pigman and I'll take it a step further. If we hadn't mistreated Barnett or tpj or Vaughan we'd have retained all 3.
Even if it meant we didn't sign Lui, Paulo and tapine (no disrespect to any of these players). So be it. That's a far better forward pack imo.

Pretty sure we let Barnett go as he was a bit of a douche and wasnt in our plans, vaughan we definitely let go as he and ricky had some issues or something to that ilk. Dont know what happened with tpj thoughFROG wrote: ↑August 24, 2018, 3:59 am I agree with pigman and I'll take it a step further. Re Vaughan and Barnett, those relationships soured badly and got so rotten they wanted out ASAP, and people like to point to that as if that's not our fault... but had we handled them better, i dont think that souring occurs at all. Same with TPJ, if he was being given a shot in FG when he had earned the right, i think there is a good chance he stays. Like you said, it may have meant we didnt get Tapine, which would suck because Tarps is a big, sexy stud... but i agree our team would be better.
At the very least i'd like to live in the alternate reality where TPJ and Barnett were given the FG spots they had earned, and Vaughan was promoted as the foundation piece to build our pack around instead of almost immediately being marginalised in favour of two clearly inferior footballers.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
It's hard to know what was going on behind the scenes with those players and their culture and also the contract negotiations to know the full story (though it sounded like Raiders bungled up Barnett's contract through reports) but yeah, with the information we do know ^ that is a fair assumption to make.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Vaughan and TPJ are certainly big losses. But Barnett is a very mediocre player whose defence is 95% of his problems. And that’s not something we miss.
I can’t fault his line running in attack, but he is a massive target for the opposition in defence.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Yeah i'd agree with that re: Barnett, the saving grace of this is it did lead up to getting Tapine who is an excellent player. So we didnt come away empty handed. It's just i'd rather we treated TPJ, Vaughan and Barnett better and know where that lead our pack, as opposed to investing in Paulo and Boyd as our foundation.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
TPJ did have some big fitness and defensive issues that in normal circumstances justified keeping him out of first grade. I think they were trying to push him to fix those up before they picked him and it just backfired totally. When a player is that talented you have to lock him up and let him learn in first grade at a club like ours.

That is Slippery Morris’ son. Like the Liberal leadership, I don’t know which right winger we are going to get.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
I'm sure there was some sort of 3 player shuffle involved, but wasn't the whole idea of singing Tapine because we lost TPJ? Barnett proved collateral damage? If so, who would you prefer, Tapine or TPJ? And yes its a tough call.Pigman wrote: ↑August 24, 2018, 10:21 am Yeah i'd agree with that re: Barnett, the saving grace of this is it did lead up to getting Tapine who is an excellent player. With Barnett, we had to make a choice between him and Bateman I believe. TBH, in hindsight, we bet on the wrong horse, as our bench looks a lot better with Barnett there than Bateman. We took the nice guy, not the footballer. That said, Bateman ticked all the boxes in jr footy, with rep jumpers and the like, so I guess they were hoping for more/ better.
Losing Vaughan was a terrible shame. Yes there was some personal issues, so other off field issues, and the 'souring', but ultimately the Drags threw a massive pile of money at him, which I suspect we were not going to be able to match. Would I prefer Vaughan over Boyd or Paulo, YES, esp Paulo.

TPJ thinks the grass is greener in Charny than Brisbane.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Paulo has played some of the most dominant games i have seen a front rower play. Problem is that he only does it every Haileys Comet passing. If he could have consistency he would be playing SOO
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
The stretch after he arrived in 16 is going to be hard for him to match
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2018
Paulo is still 24.....turns 25 in Nov. Part of me thinks his best football is still ahead of him if injuries are kind.

No chance he is staying in Brisbane.Pigman wrote: ↑August 23, 2018, 8:34 pm Thats legit my reaction. Ill never believe this pisspot club could pull this off.
Frankly its **** we're here to begin with, that was a "MUST KEEP" guy and had we handled him the way we should, i dont think he would have ever left. People can come at me all they like about that, but we mistreated him badly, he knew it and left.
If we signed him, i dont think i'd believe it until he's running out for us in the jersey in round 1 2019
This is just another example of players we let go we should have kept. Why we kept Boyd over Vaughn.

Can’t speak for TPJ or Vaughan but I know Barnett had a decent dust-up with a player not long before he left. Not sure how serious it was or if it factored into the decision to let him go but I reckon there’s a few things that influence retention that we don’t know about.

I heard about Barnett and his firey nature off the field. So it may have been part of calculations.Ruben Daley wrote: ↑August 25, 2018, 8:48 am Can’t speak for TPJ or Vaughan but I know Barnett had a decent dust-up with a player not long before he left. Vaughan had his off field stuff too. Nothing too serious, but against coach and club wishes
