Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos took some revenge against the Queanbeyan Blues in a "replay" of the 2017 Canberra Raiders Cup on Saturday, taking out the Queanbeyan derby, 42-34, at Freebody Oval. A total of 14 tries were scored in the high scoring affair, with the Kangaroos only closing out the game in the final stages, scoring two tries in the final six minutes.

The Kangaroos started the match on fire, with winger Fonua Tonga scoring in the corner in just the third minute. The home team quickly piled on three more tries to take a 22-0 lead by the 20 minute mark. Brent Crisp was in everything in the early stages, scoring a try and then putting up a huge bomb, and forcing an error from Blues fullback Tristan Eldridge, for Bryan Cronan's try in the 18th minute.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

The Blues hit back with a brace of tries, first to second rower Josh Stuckey in the 22nd minute, and then a brilliant four pointer to half Jordan Williams in the 30th minute - with Terry Campese, Stuckey and Eldridge heavily involved in the lead up. An altercation after the Williams try saw the Blues captain coach, Campese sent to the sin bin after punches were thrown. Josh Baker converted, standing in for Campese in the goal kicking department. The Blues held on, one man short, for the rest of the first half, going to the break trailing 22-12.

Just three minutes into the second half, the Blues drew closer, after a try to David Barrie, who charged over from dummy half. With that try, the visitors had closed the gap to just four points, but the Kangaroos kicked away again. Tries to prop Josh Hitchens in the 47th minute and a second try for the afternoon to Fonua Tonga in the 56th minute saw the Roos take an imposing 34-18 lead.

However the Blues just refused to go away. Josh Baker scored under the posts in the 62nd minute, and that was followed up by Blues winger Zane Bijorac just five minutes later. All the momentum was suddenly with the Blues, and after Tyler Stevens scored in the 69th minute, the 2017 premiers had incredibly drawn level with the Kangaroos, 34-34. It set up a thrilling final 10 minutes of the match. But it was the home team that took control, with Nuku Ngere scoring in the 75th minute. Crisp could not convert, and the match was not sealed until the final minute, when Kangaroos winger Ryan Tuckwell went over in the corner.

Fonua Tonga suffered a compound thumb fracture while scoring his second try.

"It didn’t look too pretty, there’s a bit of bone hanging out of the skin," Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell told The Canberra Times. "Fingers crossed, or thumbs crossed, whatever you want to say. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks but you’d think it would be his season.

Saturday's other matches were probably closer than expected, but went the way of the favourites. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers defeated the Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway, 22-16, while the Woden Valley Rams accounted for the Bulls, 22-6, at Gungahlin.

On Sunday, the Goulburn Bulldogs started well against the West Belconnen Warriors, scoring the first try, and then taking a 12-6 lead with a second, within the first 15 minutes. But the Bulldogs were unable to trouble the scoreboard attendant again. The Warriors led 18-12 at half time and ran out 28-18 winners.

The Round 15 results saw the Bushrangers, Kangaroos, Warriors and Rams strengthen their hold on a top four position, while the Blues will now struggle to make the finals and may well miss the opportunity to defend their title.

Canberra Raiders Cup: How to know the West Belconnen Warriors are firing

You know when Troy Thompson says something was good, it must have been bloody good.

"We've had a few injuries and a couple of blokes pulled out [on Saturday] so that was a big loss for us," Thompson said. "We called on four or five reserve grade players and they played pretty well actually which was good. It was just good to get a win on the books and get our confidence back. Beau McFarlane played well in his debut, Destiny Kalolo and Tim Middleton played pretty well as well.

WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 28 (M Campbell, T Moa, R Thomas, J Graham, B McFarlane tries; L Keeley 4 goals) defeated GOULBURN BULLDOGS 12 (J Aubusson, Z Hart tries; C Hart 2 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

Round 16 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a do or die clash between the Yass Magpies and West Belconnen Warriors at Walker Park this Saturday. There are only three rounds left in the regular season... and the third placed Warriors will want a victory on the road, so as to help secure a top four finish. The Magpies sit in fifth, three competition points away from the fourth placed Rams... and will be even more desperate for a win.

They Warriors have a nine and four record in 2018, after their good 28-12 win over the Goulburn Bulldogs last week. It broke a two game losing streak for the Warriors, and they have now won three of their past five matches.

The Magpies are coming off a bye, but are on a three game losing streak, after winning their previous five matches. Yass was thrashed 46-12 by the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody in their last start - so they’ll be keen to turn things around at their home ground. They might fancy their chances, given they had a narrow 18-16 victory over the Warriors at Kippax in Round 7.

2018 Round 7 - West Belconnen Warriors V Yass Magpies highlights

The Warriors have a better attacking and defensive record than the Magpies. The Warriors score an average of 24 points per match, conceding 20. Meanwhile, the Magpies score 21 points per match and concede 23 on average. Both teams have had a bit of a rocky road in recent weeks, and the Magpies are tough at home... but the form points to a Warriors victory.

At Seiffert Oval, the Queanbeyan Blues must win against the Goulburn Bulldogs to hold onto their mathematical chances of a top four spot. The Blues are placed sixth and five competition points away from the fourth placed Rams. A loss would see any faint finals hopes disappear. The Blues have a 6-6-2 record this year, and have not won in their past seven matches, losing five and drawing two. The Bulldogs are out of the running in 2018, having won just four games all season and losing nine. They are on a three game losing streak, but have won two of their past five games. Those wins were against the bottom of the table Bulls and Sharks... but then again, those teams recently forced draws when pitted against the Blues. The Blues are at home and had a big 40-10 win over the Bulldogs in Round 7... but the Dogs have a chance of an upset in this one.

2018 Round 7 - Queanbeyan Blues V Goulburn Bulldogs highlights

In other matches, expect the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers to be too strong for the Gungahlin Bulls, and the second placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos to account for the winless Belconnen United Sharks.

"We approach this week like we would any other game, as if we were versing a top four team," Tuggeranong Bushrangers Blake Murray said about his team's clash with the Bulls. "We versed Sharks on the weekend who are down the bottom and it was a really scrappy game for us. We got up by six points, and we'll take the two points, but if we come up against a team like the Bulls or Roos they'll make us pay for it."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Gungahlin Bulls tackling concussion head on

As a nurse, Suzie Goodall got to see the other side of concussion and hear the horror stories. People falling asleep and never waking up. Brain bleeds requiring emergency surgery. It's why the Gungahlin Bulls physiotherapist helped introduce a concussion protocol for the Canberra Raiders Cup team that goes above and beyond the standard.

"I just don't think some people realise how bad it can be. But if you do the right thing from the start you're sweet."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Fijian flyer Mikaele Ravalawa inspires Gungahlin Bulls boilover

Mikaele Ravalawa is a quiet bloke off the field and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers wish he was a quiet bloke on it. He isn't, which is exactly why a rival NRL club might have come knocking for the Canberra Raiders flyer.

Gungahlin played like Bulls in a china shop on their way to a stunning 22-12 win over the ladder-leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Saturday.

GUNGAHLIN BULLS 22 (M Ravalawa 2, T Sherd, J Scholes tries; J Scholes 3 goals) defeated TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 12 (N Vanisi, L Tuicakau tries; J Mitchell, M Picker goals)

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 44 (T Eldridge 2, J Williams 2, F Fainifo, J Stein, G Stewart, J Stuckey tries; T Campese 4, J Baker goals) defeated GOULBURN BULLDOGS 12 (C Brebner, A Marshall tries; C Hart, H Hodge goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Wrap

The Gungahlin Bulls pulled off a stunning upset against the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers in Round 16 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, winning 22-12 at Gungahlin Enclosed on Saturday.

The Bushrangers started strongly, with second rower Noa Vanisi scoring a soft try in the third minute, after the visitors benefited from an off side penalty in the red zone. Tuggeranong took a 6-0 lead witih Josh Mitchell's conversion - and they looked the better team for much of the opening 20 minutes. However, the Bulls put up a great fight and were next to score - with Mikaele Ravalawa putting young winger Todd Sherd over in the corner in the 21st minute. The teams went to the break with the Bushrangers leading by just two points, 6-4.

Gungahlin Bulls V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

Five minutes into the second half, the Bulls took the lead, after Mikaele Ravalawa scored a spectacular try, following a kick rebound and an error from Bushrangers fullback Matthew Gruber. Gungahlin followed up just four minutes later, with Jake Scholes refusing to be stopped and momentum getting him across the line. That gave the home team a 16-6 lead.

In the 60th minute, Ravalawa - who has reportedly signed with the St George Illawarra Dragons - was back in the action, picking up a Mick Picker kick on the Bulls' own goal line and running 100 metres to score another spectacular four pointer. The conversion from Jake Scholes gave Gungahlin a 22-6 lead - and they protected it until three minutes from the end, when Livi Tuicakau crossed for the Bushies in the corner.

Bulls coach David Howell was full of praise for Raiders and Mounties winger Ravalawa after the match.

"[It's important] for him to come back and enjoy footy and work on the things he needs to work on, then sort out whatever is going on above us. We’ll just make the most of it while he is here," Howell told The Canberra Times.

"He’s been told he is coming back to us to play a few games and we’ve just fitted him in, and I just basically told him to enjoy his footy down here because he is a step above this sort of level. He’s only going to improve."

In other matches, the Yass Magpies kept their top four chances alive, by defeating the West Belconnen Warriors 16-12 at Walker Park - after the context was all tied up, 12-12, late in the match. The Warriors have dropped to fourth place, with the Magpies now two competition points behind them.

Yass Magpies V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are one competition point behind the first placed Bushrangers, after an expected victory over the Belconnen United Sharks. They will host the Bushrangers next week, in a match that could well decide the 2018 minor premiership.

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

In the remaining match, the Queanbeyan Blues broke a seven match winless streak, with a big 44-12 victory over the Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval. But it is all too late for the Blues, even though they have a bye in hand. With two rounds remaining, they are four competition points shy of the fourth placed Warriors - and have five teams in front of them.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

Round 17 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top of the table clash between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Freebody Oval this Saturday. There are only two rounds left in the regular season and this match will be crucial in determining which team will finish minor premiers. The Bushrangers sit in first, just one competition point ahead of the second placed Kangaroos.

They Bushies have an 11 and three record in 2018, after suffering a surprise 22-12 loss against the Gungahlin Bulls last week. It interrupted a four game winning streak for Tuggeranong outfit. The Kangaroos have been building over the course of the season - and are undefeated in their past seven matches. The closest they came to a loss was the Round 11 draw with the Woden Valley Rams. They have just one less win than the Bushrangers this season - with their last defeat a big 46-22 loss to Tuggeranong in Round 8 at Greenway. The Roos had a big 34-6 win over the Belconnen United Sharks in their last start.

2018 Round 8 - Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

The Kangaroos have the best attack in the competition, while the Bushrangers have the best defence. The Bushrangers rank second in the league in attack, averaging 31 points scored per match, compared with 34 for the Roos. The Kangaroos rank fourth in defence, conceding 22 points per match, compared with just 15 conceded by the Bushies. Tuggeranong has the sort of defence required to win premierships.

Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell is looking for consistency with the countdown to the finals underway.

“That’s probably been our biggest weakness all year,” Gorrell said. “We’ve been really good for short periods but to win against the top sides, you need to be good for long periods of time. If we drop our last two games, we slide back to fourth. If we win two we finish first, so we control our own destiny and we’ve spoken about that for the last six weeks.”

This should a great contest. Given the Roos probably have the better recent form and the home ground advantage, they might just get the competition points.

The Yass Magpies must win over the Gunghalin Bulls at Walker Park on Saturday if they are to keep their finals hopes alive. The Magpies are placed fifth, two competition points away from the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors. It is a match Yass should win, given the Bulls have just three wins to their name this year.

Surprisingly, the Bulls have a stronger recent form line. They have won two and drawn one in their past five matches, while the Magpies have a WLLLW record. But Yass has had the tougher draw in that time. Both teams are coming off confidence boosting wins. The Bulls knocked off the competition leaders last week, while the Magpies beat the Warriors 16-12. When the two teams met in Round 8, Yass ran out 30-16 winners at Gunghalin. Expect a Yass win at home in this one.

The third placed Woden Valley Rams also cannot afford a loss when they travel to Goulburn to meet the Bulldogs in the remaining match on Saturday. The Bulldogs have won only four matches so far in 2018; the Rams nine, drawing one. The Rams are undefeated in their past nine matches, with that run including a 48-22 win at Phillip in Round 8. We're tipping the Rams should be too strong for the Dogs.

On Sunday, the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors host the winless Belconnen United Sharks. It is a must win for the Warriors, after falling to Yass last week, and winning only one match in their past five games. They narrowly defeated the Sharks in Round 8, 18-16, at O'Connor. However, anything other than a good Warriors win will be a surprise.

We'll bring you scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter as we have them to hand. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

The Woden Rams halves partnership 13 years in the making

When Lincoln Withers was pictured at a coaching clinic for a Woden Valley Rams under-8s team during his Canberra Raiders days 13 years ago, little did he know the kid to his right would one day be his teammate.

That kid was Sean Maloney, who has struck an impressive partnership with Withers to help the Rams to one of the club's best Canberra Raiders Cup campaigns in years.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos bound to top of Canberra Raiders Cup

What better way to announce yourself as premiership favourites than thrashing the previous ladder leaders. But Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell wasn't getting too carried away, they're just "going OK". They knocked the Tuggeranong Bushrangers off the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder with an emphatic 44-6 victory at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 44 (Tries: B Cronan 2, T Henderson, S Meke, J Baxter, N Grant, D Hay, N Ngere; B Crisp 6) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 6 (Try: J Mitchell; Goal: J Mitchell)

West Belconnen Warriors Ryan McQueen set to make his mark on Canberra Raiders Cup

Troy Thompson has called on Ryan McQueen to make his mark on the Canberra Raiders Cup in the hope it can inspire another West Belconnen fairytale. The West Belconnen Warriors posted a massive 54-12 win to rub salt into the wounds of the winless Belconnen United Sharks at Kippax Oval on Sunday.

WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 54 (R McQueen 3, R Thomas 2, M Campbell, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, B Loughhead, T Moa, J Graham tries; L Keeley 7 goals) defeated BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 12

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have knocked Tuggeranong off the top of the competition ladder, after posting a huge 44-6 win over the Bushrangers at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

The Kangaroos have given themselves every opportunity to take the minor premiership, but to guarantee it, they must win a blockbuster contest next week against the West Belconnen Warriors in the final round of the regular season.

After leading the competition for much of the season, back to back losses for the Bushrangers have seen them drop to second place, just one competition point behind the Kangaroos. If they're to take the minor premiership, they must win against the Queanbeyan Blues next week, and depend on a Kangaroos loss.

The clash at Freebody was an arm wrestle for the first 20 minutes. The Kangaroos broke the nil all deadlock right at the mid point of the half, when Sekope Meke went over in the corner - set up by a great cut out pass from fullback Nick Grant. The Kangaroos took an 8-0 lead six minutes from the break, when Tyrone Henderson crossed in the opposite corner. And then with just two seconds left on the clock, a great individual run from Bryan Cronan delivered another four pointer - and a 14-0 scoreline in favour of the home team at half time.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The Kangaroos really opened up the attack in the second half. Roos bench forward Jayden Baxter crashed over two minutes into the second half. That was followed up in the 51st minute, when Bryan Cronan again showed his pace, bagging his second try for the day. It was one of three Kangaroos tries scored in the space of 10 minutes - and all of a sudden, the Queanbeyan outfit led 38-0. Tuggeranong hooker Josh Mitchell converted his own try in the 66th minute - and they would be the Bushrangers only points of the afternoon. The Roos answered almost immediately, with a four pointer to Nuku Ngere producing the final 44-6 result.

It was a dominant performance, but Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell wasn't getting carried away.

"We've done all we needed to so far, but we're still not getting too far ahead of ourselves ... we're going OK, but I still think we've got a bit of improvement," he told The Canberra Times after the match.

The Woden Valley Rams held onto third place, with a 38-14 victory over the Bulldogs at Goulburn. They are just two competition points adrift of the first placed Kangaroos, and mathematically still in the running for the minor premiership - but they best they can realistically hope for is a top two finish.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Woden Valley Rams highlights

The Yass Magpies kept their very slim top four chances alive with a 20 point victory over the Gungahlin Bulls. However, the West Belconnen's big 54-12 win over the Belconnen United Sharks have all but wrapped up a top four place for the Warrios. Even if the Warriors lose next week and the Magpies win over the Bulldogs, Yass is currently well behind West Belconnen in terms of points differential... 100 points behind.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

It is the final round of the regular season in the Canberra Raiders Cup, with a number of matches critical to finalising the top four.

There is no match more critical than the clash between the ladder leading Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax on Saturday. The Kangaroos can sew up the minor premiership with a win, while the Warriors won't want to risk a loss and put their top four place in jeopardy.

The fifth placed Yass Magpies are two competition points adrift of the Warriors, and loss for West Belconnen and a win for Yass could see the two teams finish level on 24 competition points. But the Warriors are 100 points ahead of the Magpies on points differential... so it would require the Warriors to lose big time, and the Magpies to record a huge win over the Goulburn Bulldogs, if the Magpies were to take fourth place.

The Kangaroos are just one competition point ahead of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, so a loss for the Kangaroos, and a win for the the Tuggeranong outfit over the Queanbeyan Blues would see the Bushies snatch the minor premiership.

Meanwhile, the Woden Valley Rams should beat the Belconnen United Sharks... and if they secure that win, and the Blues inflict a third straight defeat on the Bushrangers, the Rams could take second place. And if both the Kangaroos and Bushrangers lose, the Rams could jump both to take the minor premiership.

In the match of the round, the Kangaroos will be favoured to defeat the Warriors. The Kangaroos have an 11 and three record this season - plus one draw - while the Warriors are 10 and five. The Roos are far and away the best attacking team in the league, scoring an average 37 points per match, compared with 25 points for the Warriors. The Warriors do, however, have the better defensive record of the two clubs. The Warriors concede an average of 19 points per match, the Kangaroos 21.

The Kangaroos have been undefeated in their past eight matches. The closest they came to defeat in that time was the 22-22 draw with the Woden Valley Rams in Round 11. They had a big 44-6 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Freebody Oval in their last start, to knock the Bushies off their perch at the top of the competition table. In contrast, the Warriors have been in mixed recent form. They've won two of their past five matches, losing to the Rams, Bushrangers and Magpies in that time. They had a 42 point win in their last start against the Sharks. In Round 9, the Kangaroos inflicted a 52-22 defeat on the Warriors. The key thing for the Warriors, should they lose, is to make it close.

2018 Round 9 - Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

In other matches, the second placed Bushrangers should be too good for the Queanbeyan Blues; the Rams could be expected to account for the Sharks; and the Magpies should win against the Bulldogs, despite being away from home.

Woden Valley Rams lock forward Jeff Morgan hopes his team will be continuing their 10 game undefeated streak at home base at Phillip.

“We want to continue to build for the finals this weekend, I don’t think we believe we have reached the peak of our form yet,” Morgan said.

“We have another level to go and that’s what this week’s about is trying to do a good number on the Sharks and show the other sides we mean business and are ready to play finals.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Reconstructed Warner all the try-scoring Yass Magpies kneed

He was only meant to be out for six weeks, but when big bopper Tom Warner turned up for his first pre-season session with Yass it turned out he needed a knee reconstruction.

A year later and the personal trainer is making up for lost time and is coming off a hat-trick that has him equal leading try scorer of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell hopping mad over loss to West Belconnen Warriors

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell blasted his team and said they'd be out the finals backdoor if they produced another display like their 18-16 loss to West Belconnen Warriors at Holt on Saturday.

"We were just dumb, mentally weak, stupid, all of the above. We've just got a couple of people who are all about themselves and need to put the team first or we'll go straight out the backdoor next week," Gorrell said. "We got everything we deserved today so back to the drawing board and hopefully we get a change of attitude.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers are the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiers after defeating the Queanbeyan Blues, 48-18, at Greenway. The Bushrangers led the competition for the major part of the season... and it looked like they had stumbled in the final stages of the season. But they grabbed the title in the final round of the regular season.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos had the opportunity to finish first, but a narrow 18-16 loss to the West Belconnen Warriors saw them miss a top two finish - and a second bite at the cherry in the finals. The Roos dropped to third, after the Woden Valley Rams recorded a huge 62-18 win over the Belconnen United Sharks - and the Rams overtook them on points differential.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

Woden Valley Rams V Belconnen United Sharks highlights

The win for the Warriors secured fourth place for the West Belconnen outfit - with the 28-22 win for the Yass Magpies over the Goulburn Bulldogs not enough to get them to the top four.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Yass Magpies highlights

Week 1 of the finals sees a big power shift in the Canberra Raiders Cup to some traditional underdog teams, with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers to play the Woden Valley Rams in a Grand Final qualifier next Sunday. The two traditional Queanbeyan powerhouses are on the back foot, with the Blues finishing out of the top four, and the Kangaroos now in an elimination final next Saturday against the team they have just faced, the Warriors.

It is a bit of a fairytale for the Rams. They have not made the finals since 2009 and this is the first year since 1993 that all three grades have made the finals. The Rams have also taken the club championship.

The Rams did not have it all their own way against the win-less Sharks, after Lincoln Withers was rested. Woden led 32-6 at half time, but the Sharks came back early in the second half. They reduced the home team's lead to 32-18 early in the second half - but the Rams then went on with it against a heavily disrupted West Belconnen.

Rams coach Ash Barnes knows it will be a big challenge for his team next week against the Bushies.

"They've been the benchmark all year so it's exciting to be in that top two, but it's a new competition going into the semi-finals so we're going to have to be at our best," he told The Canberra Times.

Meanwhile, Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell was very disappointed in his own outfit.

"You go from a chance at minor premiers to third because you have an easy day," he told The Canberra Times.

Joint Les McIntyre Medalists for Canberra Raiders Cup best and fairest

Yass prop Tom Warner and Woden Valley second-rower Michael Gilmour were named joint winners of the Les McIntyre Medal as the Canberra Raiders Cup best-and-fairest on Wednesday.

While Warner scored one more try than Gilmour to lead the league with 14 for the season, they both polled 19 votes - two clear of Gilmour's Rams teammate Lincoln Withers, despite the halfback missing almost half the season due to injury.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1

Image

The first week of the finals of the Canberra Raiders Cup sees the Queanbeyan Kangaroos face the West Belconnen Warriors in the elimination final on Saturday and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers meet the Woden Valley Rams in the grand final qualifier on Sunday.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos had the opportunity to finish first In the final round of the regular season, but a narrow 18-16 loss to the West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax saw them miss a top two finish - and a second bite at the cherry in the finals.

Round 18 West Belconnen Warriors V Goulburn Bulldogs highlights

The Warriors’ victory secured them a top four position, but they now have to travel to the Kangaroos’ home ground, Freebody Oval... and beat the Roos twice in two weeks if they’re to progress any further in the finals.

Both the Roos and Warriors finished with 11 wins for the season, but the Roos recorded one fewer loss than the Warriors... and a draw. The Kangaroos have a formidable attacking record, ranking first in the competition. They have averaged 33 points scored per match, compared with 25 for the Warriors. West Belconnen, however, has had the better defence in 2018, conceding 19 points per match, while Queanbeyan outfit has conceded an average of 21.

The Warriors have shown some mixed form in the run to the finals, producing a LWLWW form line in their past five games. In contrast, the Kangaroos peaked towards the end of the season - excepting their stumble against the Warriors last week. Prior to that, they’d been undefeated in eight matches, a 22-22 draw with the Woden Valley Rams in Round 11 the closest they’d come to a loss. The Roos were big 52-22 winners over the Warriors in their only other encounter this season, in Round 9.

Both teams will no doubt be desperate, but given the recent form lines, and the home ground advantage for the Kangaroos, we’ll tip the Queanbeyan team in this one.

On Sunday, it’s a clash between first and second, with the victor heading straight to the Grand Final - and getting the benefit of a week end off.

The Bushrangers took their first ever minor premiership with a 48-18 victory over the Queanbeyan Blues at Greenway last weekend. They led the competition for much of the season, but it looked like two late season losses - to the Bulls in Round 16 and the Kanagaroos in Round 17 - might prove very costly. However, fortunately for Tuggeranong, the results in the final round fell their way.

Round 10 Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

“The last few weeks have been a bit tough,” Bushrangers fullback Matt Gruber said. “We just haven’t been clicking, things just haven’t been going our way but it was nice in the second half against the Blues.

“We just went back to basics. Our forwards got us rolling and off the back of that we could get some points.”

The Woden Valley Rams recorded a huge 62-18 win over the Belconnen United Sharks last week - allowing them to jump over the Kangaroos into second place on points differential.

The 2018 season has been a bit of a fairytale for the Rams. They have not made the finals since 2009 and this is the first year since 1993 that all three grades have made the finals. The Rams also took the club championship.

The Rams are undefeated in their past 11 matches - though that run includes a draw against the Kangaroos in Round 11.

In earlier matches between the two clubs this season, the Bushrangers had a 34-18 victory over the Rams in Round 1 at Greenway... while the Rams turned the tables in Round 10, with a narrow two point victory over the Bushies at Phillip.

The Bushrangers produced a 12 and four record in the regular season, with the Rams posting just one fewer win, four losses and one draw. The Rams have a better attacking record than the Bushrangers in 2018, averaging 32 points scored per match. However the Tuggeranong outfit is not far behind, averaging 30 points per match. Tuggeranong's defensive record is slightly better than the Rams, averaging 17 points conceded per match, compared with 18 for the Rams. The Rams have a slightly better points differential.

This should be a great contest, but with the Rams on a roll, and the Bushrangers recently stumbling, we'll tip Woden in a close match.

We'll bring you scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter as we have them to hand. If you're at either game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.
