2017 NSW Premiership Round 20: Mounties preview

Image

In Round 20, Mounties play the North Sydney Bears in a NSW Premiership/Jersey Flegg double header on Saturday at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

NSW Premiership: Mounties had a fight on their hands in Round 19 against the Blacktown Sea Eagles, but ran out 22-14 winners at Aubrey Keech Reserve. The match was tied 14-14 with 23 minutes remaining, but Taane Milne gave Mounties a two point lead in the 69th minute, via a penalty goal. And then hooker Craig Garvey made his presence felt, making a break from dummy half and setting Milne in for a four pointer in the 73rd minute. Milne converted his own try, securing the eight point win.

Garvey (one try assist, one line break, 31 tackles, nine runs for 116 metres), Milne (one try, four tackle breaks, 13 runs for 106 metres, five goals) and Tyler Cornish (one try, one try assist, one line break, one line break assist, two tackle breaks) impressed for Mounties. Craig Garvey (31), Jarrett Boland (29) and Ed Murphy (25), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Tony Satini (171m), Makahesi Makatoa (164m) and Corey Horsburgh (137m) produced most metres gained in attack.

Mounties are still placed second on the competition table, three competition points behind the No. 1 team, the Penrith Panthers. Their opponents this weekend, the North Sydney Bears, are placed 10th. Mounties have an 11 and six record so far this season, while the Bears have recorded just five wins, two draws and 10 losses. The Bears have a LLWLD record in their past five matches, drawing with the Newtown Jets, 28-28 in their last start. They have won just once in their last six. Mounties have a WLLWW form line.

Mounties have the better attacking and defensive record in 2018. Mounties have averaged 27 points scored per match, compared with 19 for the Bears. In defence, Mounties have conceded an average 20 points per match, compared with 24 for the Bears. Mounties have a positive points differential of 130, the Bears are -73. Mounties had a good 22-18 win over the Bears when the teams met at Central Coast Stadium in Round 7 - but the Bears certainly mounted a big challenge in the second half.

Team changes: For Mounties, Joel Luani comes in at starting hooker for Craig Garvey. That is a big loss for the Mt Pritchard team. Josh Saunders-Jones has been added to the bench. For the Bears, Marwene Hiroti moves to the wing in place of Jesse Arthars, with Jacob Gagan coming in at centre. Richard Kennar replaces Curtin Johnston on the other wing, while Johnston goes back to the bench. Former Raider Mark Nicholls has been named at prop, in place of Brock Ilett. Kyle Turner shifts back to lock, with Dean Britt named in the second row. Keaon Koloamatangi drops to the bench. Another former Raider, Rhys Kennedy will line up for the Bears at prop.

Our tip: Mounties are still adjusting to the injuries and suspension at NRL level for the Raiders, but given recent form lines, they should be too strong for the Bears.

Jersey Flegg: Mounties produced a big second half comeback last weekend in Jersey Flegg, defeating the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval, 22-12. The Sea Eagles scored three tries to one in the first half, leading 12-4 at the break. Matt Lyons scored the only try for the Mt Pritchard outfit, the result of an outstanding individual run. It was all Mounties in the second half, with tries to Paul Roache - after a great break from Daniel Keir - Thomas Robertson, and Matthew Scott.

The victory sees Mounties retain fourth place on the ladder, with an 11 and five record so far this season. They are four competition points away from the ladder leading Newcastle Knights, and just two competition points behind the Penrith Panthers and Cronulla Sharks. Their opposition this week, the North Sydney Bears, are placed 11th on the ladder, with a four and 12 record. One of those wins, however, was a 26-12 victory over Mounties in Round 7 at North Sydney Oval. Mounties are now on a six game winning streak, while the Bears are on a five game losing streak. The Bears suffered a 46-16 defeat at home at the hands of the Dragons in their last start.

Mounties have a better attacking and defensive record the Bears. Mounties have averaged 23 points scored per match, compared with 19 for the Bears. There's a bigger advantage for Mounties in defence, conceding an average of 20 points per match, compared with 30 for the Bears. Mounties have a positive points differential of 46, while the Bears have a negative points differential of 175.

For Mounties, late inclusion at fullback from last weekend, Alan Tuigamala, keeps hold of the No. 1 jersey. Nicki Soloa Toomata has been named at starting prop, after he was a late switch to the bench in Round 19, with Komiti Tuilagi dropping to the interchange. Stefano Hala has been included on an extended bench. For the Bears, Sean Sabutey comes in at centre, with Jonathan Mitsias dropping out of the squad. Lennox Whittaker has been included in the second row, with Maila Fan-Choon dropping to the bench. Jubilee Soloa replaces Keaon Koloamatangi at lock, with Koloamatangi dropping out.

When Mounties played the Bears at North Sydney Oval earlier this year, they dominated the first half, but let the home team back into the game in the second stanza. But we don't expect that upset to be repeated. Mounties should have a good win in this one.

Mounties women win through to Grand Final

Mounties are the first team to book a place in the 2018 Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership Grand Final, downing minor premiers South Sydney Rabbitohs 14-12 at Leichhardt Oval in the sides' Major Semi Final clash.

Without NSW Women's Origin star Simaima Taufa for much of the second-half, Mounties rallied to defeat the fancied Rabbitohs outfit, winning through to the competition's decider on Friday 10 August.

MATCH REPORT: North Sydney Bears stun Mounties to keep finals hopes alive

The North Sydney Bears have fanned the flames of their finals aspirations after scoring a comprehensive 34-6 upset over the second-placed Mounties at Aubrey Keech Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

In a must-win game, the Bears were extremely dominant for most of the proceedings. Onlookers would have been forgiven for thinking it was North Sydney in the top four rather than Mounties. Two-try hero Connor Tracey and halfback Dean Hawkins were outstanding in the win. Mounties deeply missed the guidance of star hooker Craig Garvey and a slew of other regulars. A multitude of unforced errors cruelled the home side, who struggled to build any pressure.

Roache is a better hooker/utility than a genuine half. Only my opinion after watching a few games of late. Runs the ball well but possibly a bit to much as a 7. Could be an old school 6 who sets himself then gets it but isn’t a real steering type of half. Elusive runner though hence why I like him at 9 or even 13

Agree, can't see Roache as a half... to be honest I can't see him progressing to firsts. Too small for the middle.

He is a bit like an old. Craig Wing style of utility bench player. Your right though. Would need some size in the off-season to fit into the middle in first grade in particular as a utility. After seeing some of the guys that come into the full time squad it doesn’t take long to put some on with focus. The game is going back to the traditional style of halves though. A steering 7 with a flashy 6. Not many steering 7’s around though these days!

Work in progress.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 21: Mounties preview

Image

In Round 21, Mounties play the Newcastle Knights in NSW Premiership on Friday afternoon at Hunter Stadium, while the Jersey Flegg team face the Knights at St Johns Oval at Charlestown on Saturday afternoon.

NSW Premiership: Mounties suffered a comprehensive 34-6 defeat the the hands of the lowly placed North Sydney Bears in Round 20 at Aubrey Keech Reserve. Mounties lost one of their best performers of 2018, hooker Craig Garvey, for the match - and the rest of the season, given the release recently granted for Garvery by the Canberra Raiders. It was one blow too many last week, with the Mounties' line up already ravaged by injuries amongst the Raiders' contracted players. Mounties only trailed by 10-6 at half time, with Tony Satini scoring just before the break. But Mounties failed to score in the second half, with the Bears adding four tries.

Makahesi Makatoa (19 runs for 169 metres, 82 post contact metres, seven tackle breaks, 30 tackles) and Tony Satini (one try, 16 runs for 155 metres, 50 post contact metres, one line break, eight tackle breaks) were amongst the best for Mounties. Makatoa (30), Mitch Cahalane (30) and Jarrett Boland (27), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Makatoa (165m), Satini (171m), and Tyler Cornish (116m) produced most metres with the ball in hand.

Mounties are still placed second on the competition table, but are now five competition points behind the ladder leading Penrith Panthers. After holding No. 1 spot for a lengthy period, it now looks like Mounties will struggle to take the minor premiership. Their opponents this weekend, the Newcastle Knights, are running dead last on the ladder. Mounties have an 11 and seven record so far this season, while the Knights have recorded just three wins, two draws and 14 losses. The Knights have a LWLLL record in their past five matches, losing by just two points, 18-16, to the Wentworthville Magpies in their last outing. They have won just once in their last nine games. Mounties have a LLWWL form line.

Mounties have the better attacking and defensive record in 2018. Mounties have averaged 26 points scored per match, compared with 17 for the Knights. In defence, Mounties have conceded an average 20 points per match, compared with 29 for the Knights. Mounties have a positive points differential of 102, the Knights are -234. Mounties had a 62-0 win over the Knights when the teams last met at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Round 13.

Team changes: For Mounties, Sitiveni Moceidreke returns on the wing in place of Jordan Martin. Joel Luani retains his place at starting hooker, while Sam Duggan comes in for Corey Horsburgh on the bench. For the Knights, NicK Meaney replaces Matthew Cooper at fullback, with Mitchell Andrews coming in at centre for Corey Denniss. Jack Cogger will start at five eighth and Jack Johns drops to the reserves list. Luke Yates shifts from lock to starting prop, with Tyrone Amey dropping to the bench. Zac Hosking will start at lock. Christian Hazard comes into the top 17 on the bench. Former Raiders Matt Allwood and Brent Naden will line up for the Knights.

Our tip: Mounties are dealing with the loss of players due to injuries and suspension at NRL level for the Raider. So it will be tough going for the men in black and yellow. However, they should still be too strong for the Knights.

Jersey Flegg: Mounties produced another big second half last weekend in Jersey Flegg, defeating the North Sydney Bears, 38-10 at Aubrey Keech. The Bears scored two early tries, to go to a 10-0 lead, but Mounties then piled on eight unanswered tries.

The victory sees Mounties retain fourth place on the ladder, with a 12 and five record so far this season. They are four competition points away from their opposition this week, the ladder leading Newcastle Knights. The Knights have a 14 and three record in 2018. Mounties are now on a seven game winning streak, while the Knights have lost twice in their last seven. One of those losses was to Mounties, 36-30, in Round 13. The Knights lost 18-4 to the Panthers in Round 19, while defeating the Parramatta Eels 38-24 in their last outing.

The Knights have a better attacking and defensive record than Mounties. The Knights have averaged 31 points scored per match, compared with 24 for Mounties. It is closer defence, with the Knights conceding an average of 18 points per match this year, Mounties 19. The Knights have a whopping positive points differential of 214, while Mounties sit on +74.

For Mounties, Nick Soloa Toomata will start at prop in place of Stefano Hala, with Hala dropping to the extended bench. For the Knights, Matthew Cooper replaces Tex Hoy at fullback, who goes back to the bench. Starford To'a comes in at centre for Mitchell Andrews. Jirah Momoisea has been named at starting prop, with Tevita Alifa dropping to the bench.

This will be a big test for Mounties, given they are playing the top team away from home - and a number of players have been now promoted to the NSW Premiership team. Surprisingly, Mounties have the better recent form, plus they defeated the Knights in their recent undefeated run. It might be a bit much to expect a repeat, but hopefully, they can pull off the upset!

2018 Mounties

Post by The Greenhouse »

Welcome to our coverage of this afternoon's NSW Premiership clash between Mounties and the Newcastle Knights.

Preview: After coming close against 11th-placed Wentworthville in a bottom-of-the-table showdown, the challenge increases tenfold this weekend when Newcastle host Mounties, who currently sit in second.

The Knights are now certain to get the wooden spoon in 2018 - they sit three wins behind the Magpies with a significantly worse points differential - while Mounties will need a miracle snag the minor premiership. While both teams' polar-opposite final standings are near certain, however, the Round 21 combatants will both be hopeful to put in a good performance in a rare Friday afternoon fixture.

Here are the final team line ups. Jack Murchie, Makahesi Makatoa, Liam Knight and Emre Guler are all playing for Mounties, suggesting the Raiders will be 1-17 on Sunday:

I hope next season they really push some of the blue chip players in the 20’s into cup early throughout the year and get them some experience. They may not be there physically but regardless it will show what they have to work with. A lot of clubs now are letting them embed themselves over an 8 to 10 game period in particular the spine players. Some mature quicker than others but I believe the younger your nsw cup side is with a few old hard nuts mixed the better. Can’t buy experience
