Tim Gavel to call Canberra Raiders games in 2019

Post by -TW- »

After 30 years of service...

'Tireless' Tim Gavel retires from ABC Grandstand after 30 years

Tim Gavel has seen just about everything on his 30-year sporting journey. Three Canberra Raiders premierships, two ACT Brumbies titles, seven Olympic Games, boardroom wars, tears and heartache.

Now the Canberra sports commentator known as 'Tireless Tim' says he'll turn off his microphone for the first time since 1988 and finish his career as an ABC journalist.

Very sad to hear. Congratulations to him on an outstanding career... and hopefully he'll continue to be the voice of the Raiders' calls into the future. Would love to see him stretch it to Saturday Canberra Grandstand as well!

Oh, this is very sad to hear. Tim Gavel on Grandstand is an institution. And he's hugely supportive of winter sports and all kinds of "minority" sports - he was always up to mention skating on his show. Big voice calling for the new rink.

Gonna miss him.
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Sad news IMO. :(

All the best for the future Tim. Raiders calls won't be the same without you.

Man I'm gonna miss him on the ABC. Love his banter with Packy and Angel.

Grats on a great career Tim.
Hope you're still going to keep up those rage inducing articles on The Roar. The comments are always a good laugh to see who you've rubbed the wrong way this week.

Tim always pushed Canberra Sport from under 8s girls Kanga cricket right up to the Raiders.

Before I got foxtel I used to have to rely on radio for all my raiders needs.... Tim has played a big part in my life. Well done on a great career mate.

Me too. and ditto with the sentiment, I love hearing a properly biased Canberra voice.

Never forget a radio call of a St George game where they scored after the siren. He was ropeable. So was I.

I guess that like me he's been seeing the NRL do us over for decades. However he's far too professional to say so.

Well done on a great career Tim. It will be very strange not to hear is voice on Grandstand when it’s to do with the Raiders.

In my almost 15 years in Canberra he has been the voice of Canberra sport. Not only at the elite level where he has been a great voice for the Raiders but as others have said, right across all Canberra sports.

Sport, and in general outdoor recreation in Canberra does play a big part of our lives and Tim keeps that at the forefront. I don’t want to start another debate on this, but I think generally the ACT government has been supportive of sport in the ACT and I think that is partly because of the profile tans scrutiny that Tim has given it.

I have met him on a number of occasions and he is a really nice guy. He is a genuine Raiders fan.

I am sure he will still be involved somewhere.

Interesting that he listed his 5 most influential sports people during his time. I am very surprised he left out Michael Milton.

Like John Farnham, Tim Gavel returns to the mic for another season

Tim Gavel is making a long mooted comeback after his retirement from the ABC last year... as commentator for Canberra Raiders games. But he'll only be behind the microphone at the 11 matches played at Canberra Stadium - as he's over the travel to away matches.

“I am making a comeback like Farnham,” Gavel said with a laugh. “When I left the ABC I did say that there was a possibility that I might return one day.”
