Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Still can't find a spot for him....especially with Havili playing well at lock
Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Maybe that's why the deal isn't done yet? Havilli is going to be a fair bit cheaper.

And John Bateman isn't an NRL lock.

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
I definitely think we still want Bateman, especially if Papa moves to prop.
A backrow rotation of Whitehead, Tapine and J.Bateman looks pretty good. Also, given that Tapine is beginning to become the kind of player you have to forecast ~6 games on the sideline through suspension each year it's even more important.

Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just the train that's about to hit you.

At the moment when we lose Whitehead or Tarps we slide Sia onto the edge. That is not sustainable moving forward, and Sticky has shown so far this year he is not confident in moving Murchie into that role, regardless of Sia’s lateral deficiencies.
Adding an international level player who can play middle, edge or centre is basically adding another Whitehead, and with no proven ability at NRL level wouldn’t break the bank.

My man on the ground in the UK think that lock in J. Bateman's best position. The same person assured me that Hodgson and Whitehead were quality (although they've both achieved more than he thought) and that Jordan Turner was bog average.
If Bateman comes I can see him at lock with our pack looking something like this:
8. Sutton
9. Hodgson
10. Papalii
11. Tapine
12. Whitehead
13. Bateman
14. Havili
15. Murchie / Knight
16. Soliola

I think it’s acceptable, for sure, but it relies on 2 imports not only producing the goods, but not getting homesick. Neither Bateman or Sutton have proven anything yet.Matt wrote: ↑July 11, 2018, 12:13 pmI could live with that packDusty wrote: ↑July 11, 2018, 10:57 am My man on the ground in the UK think that lock in J. If he happier knowing that some of the money saved for losing Austin/Paulo/Boyd, and potentially BJ would go towards an addition of a Klemmer/Tapau type, with a Norman in halves. None of our signings so far would be in close to the money Austin/Paulo/Boyd were offered, so I’m cautiously optimistic there is more to come.

It's not bad, Guler and Bateman aren't the worst back-ups.Dusty wrote: ↑July 11, 2018, 10:57 am My man on the ground in the UK think that lock in J. Bateman's best position. Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Luke Bateman will get picked ahead of Knight or Murchie.
I'd prefer Papalii to stay at Lock, but if we don't move him our depth chart for props would be:
Sia, Sutton, Lui, L.Bateman (sort of a prop),Knight, Guler, Hunt, Horsburgh (more of a lock).
That's the worst in the comp and really either way we need to hope Guler is a Vaughan type rookie.

I haven’t seen much of Guler and I only saw a bit of him in the Origin 20s tonight. Didn’t impress

He racked up 180m from 20 carries a few weeks ago in ISP

I didn’t think he was poor... Maybe I expected more, I’m not sure. Rather than saying he didn’t impress maybe I should rephrase
He was solid without being dominant

Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
Yeah at first I was expecting more but important to remember that it was Origin even if it is 20’s and you won’t often see a forward just come out and dominate in that setting. Having said that David Fifita has the potential to do justthat and it is disappointing to see the Broncos put the club above individual and I assume rule him out.Dusty wrote:I didn’t think he was poor... Horsburgh was the pick of our lot for mine and if you’re not excited about the potential for a red head to be running around in a green 13 jumper then get the **** out of here!

Guler - NSW Statistics:
14 Games
17 Tackle Breaks
10 Offloads
86.9% Tackle Eff
116.5 Avg Running Metres
178 Carries
1630 Total Metres
9.15 Metres per carry
Amazing statistics for a 20 year old forward.....
He reminds me of Alex Twal from the Tigers. He has had a good first year off the bench averaging a tad under 100 metres a game.
15 Games
96.3 Avg Running Metres
161 Runs
1445 Total Metres
8.97 Metres per carry

Re: Canberra Raiders to sign Bateman and Sutton
I haven't seen one stand out performance from him in origin, and that used to be my opinion of him, but don't let that decide it for you. He has done very well for many weeks in ISP. Looks every bit a future first grader but for whatever reason always plays bellow his best in rep games. Maybe it's a mental thing or he struggles to find rhythm. There's a big speed boost going from ISP to u20s origin.

On ABC Grandstand, Tim Gavel said they’d signed Sutton and Bateman, and Ricky agreed as if both had been announced.

I’m not sure Sutton walks straight into the starting line up. Granted he has played 100+ super league games but he is a year younger then Liam Knight. Knight is hopefully on a progression path that sees him playing greater minutes.
