Canberra Raiders Cup: Josh Mitchell leads the way as Bushrangers cage the Bulldogs

Josh Mitchell was a standout and earned high praise from Bushrangers coach Justin Giteau following a 26-12 win over the Goulburn Bulldogs in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Greenway Oval on Saturday.

"He's our leader so he's obviously one of the most important players on the park," Giteau said. "He turns up every week with the right attitude, he's a great leader and he trains well consistently. I can't speak highly enough of him."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

There are two huge matches in the Round 13 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers taking on the Yass Magpies on Saturday and the Woden Valley Rams hosting the West Belconnen Warriors on Sunday.

At Greenway, the Magpies will be aiming to hold on to their place in the top four by knocking off the competition leaders, the Bushrangers. The Magpies dropped to fourth place, after they were narrowly defeated last week by the Rams at Walker Park, 14-12. Meanwhile, the Bushies returned to the winners list in Round 12, defeating the Goulburn Bulldogs 26-12 at home.

The Bushrangers have an 8 and 2 record to start the season, while the Magpies are 7 and 4. Yass was on a five game winning streak, until last weekend's loss, while the Bushrangers have a WWWLW record in their past five. Tuggeranong has a better attacking record, averaging 32 points scored per match, compared with 23 for the Magpies. The Bushrangers also boast the best defence in the league, conceding just 16 points per match, compared with 19 for the Magpies. In Round 4, the Bushrangers defeated the Magpies 20-14 at Yass.

2018 Round 4 - Yass Magpies V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

We expect another close contest on Saturday, but the Bushrangers just might sneak home, given the match is being played at Tuggeranong.

On Sunday, the Rams will being aiming to force their way into the top four with a victory over the second placed Warriors. The Rams have not been defeated in six matches, with a 22-22 draw against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in Round 11 the closest they have come to a loss. The Warriors have a LWLWW record in their past five matches. Earlier this year, they had a 32-22 win over the Rams in Round 4.

2018 Round 4 - West Belconnen Warriors V Woden Valley Rams highlights

Rams centre Josh Pheeney admits the Rams took some time to get into full stride this season.

"It just took us a little but of time to get our combinations gelling. Having Lincoln Withers in there has been a massive boost for us," he said.

"It comes down to Ash Barnes too. We’ve been priding ourselves on our team culture and I think a lot of our recent performances having been on the back of effort."

Despite the fact the Warriors are level with the Bushrangers on 20 competition points, West Belconnen prop Daniel Killick-Moran knows it will be a big challenge this week against the Rams.

“Woden are the form side of the competition at the moment. We’ve gone into this thinking that it’s going to be our biggest challenge yet and we really need to step up to the task.”

It should be another cracking contest, and if the Rams win at home, it won't be an "upset".

In other matches, expect the Blues to be too strong for the Bulls at Seiffert, while the Kangaroos should get the points in their "road trip" to Goulburn.

The Greenhouse will be at Belmore on Saturday, but will be at Phillip on Sunday for Woden Valley Rams V West Belconnen Warriors. We'll bring you progress scores on Sunday and final scores on Saturday via @CanberraCup on Twitter. West Belconnen Warrior Daniel Killick-Moran ready for Woden revenge

You could forgive Daniel Killick-Moran for dreading his return to Phillip Oval on Sunday, two years after a twisted knee shattered his Canberra Raiders Cup premiership dream.

"They've got a lot of guys who played in the under 18's grand final win for the Rams a few years back and those guys bring a lot of energy. They are a really physical side and we've gone into this one expecting it to be one of our biggest challenges yet and we've really got to step up to the task."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Nic Mead's Gungahlin Bulls snatch a point from the Blues

With the siren blowing in the background and his side down by one, Nic Mead could only throw it on the boot and hope.

The Gungahlin Bulls lock was the unlikely hero when he slotted a field goal to reverse an 18-point deficit and snatch a 25-all draw against the Queanbeyan Blues in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 18 (J Kiely, D Hay, N Grant tries; N Grant 3 goals) bt GOULBURN BULLDOGS 16 (J Fattore 2, C Hart tries; C Hart 2 goals).

TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 42 (M Gruber 2, J Heyman 2, M Brophy, J Mitchell, T Vanisi tries; J Mitchell 7 goals) bt YASS MAGPIES 4 (W Peace try).

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 25 (T Eldridge, A McInnes, J Stuckey, J Williams tries; T Campese 4 goals; T Campese field goal) drew GUNGAHLIN BULLS 25 (K Madden 2, D Low, S Lomax, R O’Sullivan tries; J Scholes, J Fa’Amoe Ioane goals; N Mead field goal).

Sunday: Woden Valley Rams v West Belconnen Warriors at Phillip Enclosed Oval, 3pm.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Change signalled as Woden Valley Rams storm into top four

For almost a decade the Woden Valley Rams have been so close yet so far, but coach Ash Barnes thinks they might have finally turned the corner. The Rams stretched their unbeaten run to seven games with a dominant 30-4 victory over the lacklustre West Belconnen Warriors in the Canberra Raiders Cup at the Phillip Oval "graveyard" on Sunday.

"There’s still a long way to go in the competition so we’ve still got to keep turning up week in, week out. That is our focus, that’s been our aim ever since I started coaching here.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Wrap

The Woden Valley Rams have moved into the Canberra Raiders Cup top four after a dominant performance against the second placed West Belconnen Warriors at Phillip on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors scored just one try, in the 12th minute, to half Brandon Withers - with the Warriors kicking ahead twice and taking advantage of an awkward bounce. But other than that, it was one way traffic for the Rams.

Michael Gilmour scored twice, taking the man of the match award. Veteran Lincoln Withers was in fine form, setting up two tries with his cross field kicks - first to winger Cody Hodge in the 16th minute, the second to fullback Daine Spencer - who planted the ball over the line in the corner in spectacular fashion - with 22 minutes remaining. The Rams led 18-4 at half time and never surrendered the lead, taking the match 30-4.

Woden Valley Rams V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers sit alone atop the competition ladder after a big 42-4 win over the Yass Magpies at Greenway. As a result, the Magpies have dropped to sixth on the competition table. Meanwhile, the woes continued for the Queanbeyan Blues, after the Gungahlin Bulls forced a 25-25 draw, when Bulls lock Nick Mead kicked a field goal right on full time. Queanbeyan captain coach Terry Campese thought he'd secured the win with his own field goal with just two minutes remaining, but it was not to be. Finally, at Goulburn, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos had a narrow 18-16 victory over the Bulldogs - with the victory keeping the Kangaroos in third place on the ladder.

Yes, it's easier to follow than NSWRL or even NRL. NRL really needs to modernize. Proper UHD streaming services that don't require Foxtel subscriptions. Won't happen of course

Certainly the NSWRL should be streaming NSW Premiership and Jersey Flegg, anything the broadcasters do not use. They claim they can’t due to broadcast rights held by Nine and Foxtel. But in this case it should be a use it or lose it deal, so people can see the games.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

Round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top of the table clash between the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax. When the two teams met in Round 5 at Greenway, the Warriors took home the two competition points, winning 26-18. However, since that match, the Bushies have lost just one of seven matches, a two point, last gasp loss to the Woden Valley Rams in Round 10. In contrast, the Warriors have dropped three games in that time, including a big 30-4 loss to the Rams last Sunday. The Bushrangers had a huge 42-4 win over another top four contender, the Yass Magpies, last week, so they'll come into the match with plenty of confidence.

2018 Round 5 - Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The Bushrangers have a 9 and 2 record so far in 2018, while the Warriors are 8 and 3. However, Tuggeranong has a clearly better attacking and defensive record. The Bushrangers have averaged a very impressive 33 points scored per match, compared with 25 for the Warriors. Tuggeranong's defence is premiership quality. They concede 15 points per game, while the Warriors concede 19. The Bushies have a positive points differential of 203, while the Warriors sit on +66. It should be a great game, but the Bushrangers are deserved favourites to win the contest.

At Freebody Oval, the third placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos take on the sixth placed Yass Magpies. The Magpies went on a five game winning streak after their 28-18 loss to the Kangaroos in Round 5 - and were placed third on the ladder after Round 11. But two consecutive losses have seen them drop down the table - though they are just one competition point adrift of the fourth placed Rams. The Magpies were thrashed by the Bushrangers last weekend, so they'll be looking to bounce back against the Roos.

2018 Round 5 - Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

The Kangaroos are unbeaten in their last four matches, though they came close in Round 11 when the Rams forced a 22 all draw. The Kangaroos have a much stronger attacking record, while there's not much difference in the defensive record. The Roos score an average of 32 points per match, compared with 23 for the Magpies. The Magpies concede an average 22 points per match, the Kangaroos 24.

Kangaroos forward Troy Whiley expects it will be a tough match.

"It is going to be tight. We've just got to try and win every game, and just keep building to the finals," he said.

"Our priority is to finish top two, that's the main priority, but anywhere in the top four will do us. I think Yass are sixth, on the same points as the Blues. They've got to win the next couple of games to cement their spot in the top four."

"Yass, every week, are a good side. Last time when we played them down there, we didn't beat them by much. I know what they're like, they're always going to be a physical side, so we've just got to be at our best and hopefully come away with a win."

The fourth placed Rams meet the fifth placed Queanbeyan Blues at Phillip. The Blues won the match between the clubs earlier this year, 22-18. However, since that match, Woden has been undefeated, winning six and drawing one. The Blues haven't one a match in their past five outings. They drew with the Belconnen United Sharks and Gungahlin Bulls, the two teams at the bottom of the ladder, in their past two games. On form, the Rams should win, but the 2017 premiers will be looking to turn things around and force their way back into the top four.

In the remaining match, the Bulls travel to O'Connor for a meeting with the Sharks. Both teams are level on five competition points and both have suffered 10 losses - but the Bulls have a win and a draw to their name, the Sharks just one draw. It's the Sharks' best opportunity to post a victory, but the Bulls might be a bit too strong.

We'll bring you progress scores on Saturday in the match between the Bushrangers and Warriors via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

And thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to a watch live stream of the Kangaroos V Mapgies right here. Plus there are three George Tooke Shield matches scheduled for Sunday from noon:

Well that is interesting on Ravalawa. Wonder what he did to go from being in the Fiji squad to not even lining up for mounties. Unless his defensive issues are much worse than I've seen.

Canberra Raiders Cup: 'Embarrassing' Belconnen United Sharks face wooden spoon after Gungahlin Bulls loss

They made an error off their first set after half-time and the Belconnen United Sharks didn't look back with a second-half effort coach Scott Logan labelled embarrassing.

There was less than a try in it at the break with the Gungahlin Bulls holding a narrow lead at O'Connor Enclosed on Saturday, but the Sharks stayed in the sheds after the break in the 54-18 loss.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 46 (Tuckwell 2, Kiely, Hitchins, Crisp, Tonga, Cronan, Grant, Ngere tries; B Crisp 5 goals) bt Yass Magpies 12 (J McDonald, J Vatikani tries; J Toppin 2 goals)

Tuggeranong Bushrangers 36 (M Brophy, J Heyman, D Hickson, J Martin, N Smith, T Vanisi tries; J Mitchell 6 goals) bt West Belconnen Warriors 16 (T Aroha-Tuinauvai, B Loughhead, R Thomas tries; L Keeley 2 goals)

Gungahlin Bulls 54 (Samual Bramich 3, Hamo-Tama Hamo, Sheen Lomax, Drury Low, Kye Madden, Nicholas Mead, Rourke O'Sullivan, Michael Sollis tries; Nicholas Mead 5, Bradley Scholes, Jake Scholes goals) bt Belconnen United Sharks 18 (Jason Brown, Matthew Hogan, Sonny Tupuola tries; Darcy Eason 3 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers solidified their position at the top of the competition ladder after a 36-16 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors on Saturday in Round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. The Warriors' loss has seen them drop to third, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos jumping over them - after they thrashed the Yass Magpies at Freebody Oval.

At West Belconnen, the Bushrangers opened strongly, with winger Jack Heyman planting the ball over the line in just the second minute. Tuggeranong scored three tries in all in the first 25 minutes, skipping out to a 16-0 lead. The Warriors fought back in the 31st minute, with a try to lock Bayley Loughheed - after Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai made a huge break down field in the lead up. Aroha Tuinauvai was again in the middle of the action just before half time. The Warriors produced some great attack after a kick rebounded - and Aroha Tuinauvai was on the end of some slick passing to score.

West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The Bushrangers took a 16-10 lead to the half time break, with the Warriors right in the contest - but they home team could not maintain their momentum in the second half. The Bushrangers piled on three tries, including a great four pointer from Michael Brophy in the 56th minute - proving there is still some speed in those old legs. The visitors had wrapped up the match by the 65th minute, taking a 34-10 lead. The Warriors scored a consolation try through fullback Ryley Thomas, with four minutes left - the result of a good individual run. A penalty goal to Bushrangers hooker Josh Mitchell on full time delivered the final 36-16 scoreline.

At Freebody Oval, the Yass Magpies continued their poor run of form, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos handing them a big 46-12 defeat. The home team led 22-0 at half time and 36-0 with around 20 minutes remaining. Yass scored twice in the final stages, through Jesse McDonald and Junior Vatikani, but the match was well and truly over by that stage. The Kangaroos scored nine tries in all, with Ryan Tuckwell scoring a double.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Yass Magpies highlights

At Phillip, the Woden Valley Rams extended their unbeaten run to eight matches, with a 46-16 defeat of the 2017 premiers, the Queanbeyan Blues. The Rams look much more secure in the top four. They are three competition points ahead of their two main challengers, the Blues and the Magpies. The Blues are one of the teams having a tough year with injury - and it looks like they'll now struggle to defend their title.

At O'Connor, the Belconnen United Sharks remained winless in 2018, after suffering a 54-18 loss to fellow cellar dweller, the Gungahlin Bulls. It was a close contest in the first half, but the Bulls piled on almost 40 points in the second. The result may well save the Bulls from the dreaded wooden spoon, as the competition heads into the final month of the regular season.

Sharks coach Scott Logan labelled the performance of his team as embarrassing.

"It doesn't matter who I put out there we can't seem to respond after a little bit of adversity," Sharks coach Scott Logan told The Canberra Times.

"The floodgates opened there and we had 40-odd points put on us in the second half, which is quite frankly embarrassing considering we probably should've been in front at half-time. It's not acceptable."

Canberra Raiders life member Noel Bissett to retire as CRRL Chair

After 52 years involved with the game, it was time. Canberra Raiders life member Noel Bissett will retire as Canberra Region Rugby League chairman at the end of the year.

"It was time to retire. I've been around for a long time, nothing specific brought it on I just thought it was time," he said. "I made a lot of friends and that's probably what kept me on. When I finished playing and then refereeing and going on to the administration, it was a way to keep in touch with everybody.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

Round 15 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the Queanbeyan derby on Saturday - a replay of the 2017 Grand Final - and a clash between the Warriors and Bulldogs on Sunday.

Freebody Oval is the stage for the Queanbeyan derby, with the second placed Kangaroos to host the cross town Blues. The Kangaroos moved into second place on the competition ladder last week, after their big 46-12 win over the Yass Magpies. They have an eight and three record for 2018, with one draw, compared with six and five, plus two draws, for the Blues.

When the two teams met earlier this year, the Blues were 38-22 victors over the Kangaroos. But the two teams' fortunes have changed since then. The Roos are undefeated in the past five rounds, with the 22 all draw against the Rams in Round 11 being the closest they've come to a loss. In contrast, the Blues have had a rough recent ride, not wining in their past six matches - including two draws against the Bulls and Sharks, both teams at the bottom of the ladder.

2018 Round 6 - Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

The Kangaroos have a better attacking and defensive record than the Blues. The Roos score an average of 33 points per match, conceding 23. Meanwhile, the Blues score 23 points per match and concede as many, on average.

"I reckon they'll be a different team come this weekend," Kangaroos prop Josh Hitchins says. "The last derby was good but with it being at our home ground this weekend it will be much better.

This is a replay of the 2017 Grand Final... but on current form lines, the 2017 runners up, the Roos, should win this one.

At Kippax on Sunday, the third placed West Belconnen Warriors will be desperate to turn around their form and hold onto their place in the top four. The third placed Warriors are on a LWWLL record in their past five games - losing to the Woden Valley Rams, 30-4, in Round 13 at Phillip, and to the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 36-16, last week at home.

The Woden Valley Rams will be favourites to beat the Bulls when they travel to Gunghaling on Satuday - so a third straight loss for the Warriors will likely see them drop to fourth.

The seventh placed Bulldogs will also be desperate for a win, so as to keep their mathematical chances of a finals spot alive. However, the Warriors should be able to take this one. The Warriors have averaged 24 points scored per match, compared with 19 for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defence is their main issue. They have conceded an average of 28 points per match, the Warriors 20. The Bulldogs have also lost their last two matches, to the Kangaroos and the Bushrangers, and three of their last five. When the Warriors and Bulldogs last met in Round 6, the Warriors ran out 26-12 winners.

2018 Round 6 - Goulburn Bulldogs V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

In other matches, expect the Rams to be too strong for the Bulls, and the top of the table Tuggeranong Bushrangers to account for the winless Belconnen United Sharks.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos veteran Josh Ayers drops 23 kilograms in hunt for title

He worked tirelessly to shed 23 kilograms from his hulking frame during the pre-season and now Queanbeyan Kangaroos forward Joshua Ayers wants to reap the rewards on the run to the finals.

"I have always played around 105-110 kilograms and last year I was playing at 118, which is probably the heaviest I have ever played at, but now I'm sitting around 95 and feel a lot more lighter and agile. It's the best I have felt in years."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Fonua Tonga's compound fracture sours Queanbeyan Kangaroos win

Aaron Gorrell laughs Fonua Tonga is hard to gauge at the best of times - but something was clearly wrong when he had a bone sticking out of his skin. Tonga played a starring role as the Queanbeyan Kangaroos escaped with a thrilling 42-34 win over the Queanbeyan Blues in a heated cross-town derby at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

"It didn’t look too pretty, there’s a bit of bone hanging out of the skin," Gorrell said. "Fingers crossed, or thumbs crossed, whatever you want to say. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks but you’d think it would be his season.
