Charlie Gubb is Super League bound

Canberra Raiders prop Charlie Gubb is Super League bound

Canberra Raiders prop Charlie Gubb looks to have played his last game for the NRL club and could be English Super League bound as early as next week. It's believed three clubs have made offers in the past 24 hours for the popular member of the Green Machine.

Gubb joined the Raiders on a one-year deal, with Canberra holding an option for 2019. But they seem unlikely to take that up, forcing the 28-year-old to look abroad.

Yvonne said Charlie should of been sent off/bigger suspension because fans come to see cleary not charlie or something along those lines

Pretty much some players should be untouchable

cat, seriously, he got very lucky on a dumb dangerous late contact on the highest profile halfback in the game.
He was very lucky to get what he got.

I think its a pity.
he is a decent backup forward and probably not on too much coin.
When a player "falls in love with the Canberra lifestyle" and he is not McCrone, he's worth holding on to.
When the club says it wants players who want to be here, doesn't that include Gubb?
I mean players who like Canberra are a rare breed.

Sooo..... This leaves us with say... 2.2mil to go to market for a first grade half and two first grade props. Assuming the new pom fills the "fringe forward" position. It would seem the market looks pretty bare, I think we're unlikely to get Klemmer.

I really don't see Gubb's departure creating any cap space. Fringe forwards like him who come on a 1 year deal are going to be close to minimum contracts.

Emre Guler ran for 173m, and Makatoa played 80 at prop on the weekend

I think we're covered for fringe/bench props

Yep, creates no cap space, not concerned about him moving on. He has been a disappointment.

This is what i was saying a few weeks ago re: letting guys like this and Havilii go early if they want
It's just good business to let a guy like this go and chase an opportunity they like more. We dont really miss him, he'll be replaced by someone who does the same job as good, slightly better or slightly worse and nothing really changes, but it makes us an appealing destination for guys like him, because they know we wont stand in the way of them wanting to keep it moving.

And the upside is the Jordan Rapana story. Where they come here on a whim, turn into a superstar, and we're the guys who gave them a shot, so we get a REAL shot at keeping them

on what planet could Gubb be considered a disappointment?
If he's disappointed you, it's because you had unrealistic expectations of him. That's on you, not him.

He was signed to play pretty regular first grade, that makes him dissapointing recruitment at least.

That’s why he’s been disappointing. But no issue... time to move on, good luck Charlie on his next destination.

Sorry, I agree. Super disapointing. Had his chance to make the first grade spot his own.... Didn't deliver.

Again comes back to expectations. I personally didn't have expectations of him being any more than a fringe 1st grade forward.

Anyone know whether under the new top 30 model are we able to promote a player in his place?

Was he? If so that's a total miss-evaluation by our club. Again, on us not him.
Gubb is a 4th middle in a bad team, a 5th-6th middle in anything above that. He was depth, I.E to be used when needed. If we signed him to be part of our top 17, the shame is ours.

Anyone who watched him play couldnt possibly expect him to come here and play regular FG ahead of Boyd, Paulo, Sia and Bateman. If he was playing ahead of those guys it would be a disaster for whomever he's beating out.
Lui and him should be battling it out for "next cab off the ranks". And they were, as it's turned out Paulo has missed significant time and Lui has mostly got that spot. Gubb has performed at the level i would have expected of him. I've got no qualms with his work here.

I guess I compare the recruitment of someone like Lima into that 5th/6th middle to Gubb and it's dissapointing from that aspect, or even someone like Preist for a similarly priced recruit.

I agree he performed as he has elsewhere though.

Was he signed as a starter? I remember an interview he had early in the year pretty much say that he had to fight the Mounties players for a starting position

You don’t even need to bat that deep under the Stick regime, given how often he’s left one of them to have 80mins of pine-time
