The other one we just signed for 2 years and I simply don't understand it.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
You mean the one that emerged as the next big thing, and then proceeded to phone it in Bronson Harrison style?
Yes let's re sign him

Today only went to show that this is a mistake.
Austin had his best running game for 6 months because he had someone beside him that could threaten the line and organise both defence and attack (you know, like a halfback is meant to do).
Sezer should not be playing halfback for the Raiders for the next two years.

We made the right choice in keeping Sezer because he is a better defender and ball distributer than Austin. We still need a first choice kicker and game manager in the halves to help our Hodgo.

You're right Noa, what we need to sign up for right now is another few years of Blake Austin's defensive efforts today.
Haha. Honestly

I'm also of the belief that Austin would be back to his best in the right setup attacking wise - that is with Hodgson at 9 and a more dominating half in 7. He is still dangerous in those moment when he's solely focused on running and would complement a strong halfback.
Signing Sezer isn't the right choice in any scenario; his ceiling is low and he isn't strong enough in any facet of the game to warrant being first string. If he ever managed to get his kicking game together consistently (which I highly doubt will ever happen), he would then probably make it. Without that he is painfully limited.
That said, Austin's defensive lapses are just far too costly. I'm a big believer in not picking halves with their defence at the forefront of the selection criteria, but I'd be more comfortable if that was based on lack of physicality (ala Sam Williams) rather than his issue of making consistently poor reads.
He isn't the only player who's a poor reader in defence but you need to show improvement quickly and he isn't - he's regressing if anything.

I thought some of his kicking today was very good, especially in the first half kicking into the wind. Coincidentally, I noticed that improvement in his kicking right around the time Austin went off.
He's a much better defender and his passing game is pretty good, like that lovely ball to Austin to send him through the gap.

OFFICIAL: Aidan Sezer re-signs with the Canberra Raiders on two year deal
The Canberra Raiders have received a boost heading into their round 16 match against the Broncos in Brisbane, with halfback Aidan Sezer agreeing to a new two-year deal with the Green Machine.
"To sort the contract stuff out is a breath of fresh air and to have my future locked up for the next couple of years is a positive move for myself," Sezer said. "I love being around the boys and enjoy the club. There's a lot of factors that go into the decision but I'm happy with the decision ultimately and I look forward to representing the Raiders and Canberra."

Corporate line mate.
What that really says is...
Aidan's a decent player who we believe we can coach, to do a job, behind our dominate play maker at our club. He is an organising halfback who is an important part of our team, while we are looking to find someone else, to pair with him, so that they can lead us around the park, over the next two years.

Did anyone watch Origin? What Maloney did when Cordner went off concussed and Jimmy the Jet had Jetted off to the sin bin - that's what we all want. Rally the troops, lay down the law, lead from the front, manage the game and kick intelligently for any given situation.
I would give my left nut for James Maloney to come here.

Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer, agree to terms with John Bateman for three year deal
The Canberra Raiders confirmed halfback Aidan Sezer's re-signing for another two years on Wednesday. It comes on top of the Green Machine agreeing to terms with England utility John Bateman for the next three years.
The Raiders are also close to finalising two-year extensions for props Sia Soliola and Dunamis Lui, with talks also progressing for winger Michael Oldfield to stay for another two years.

Bateman finally all but over the line.
Good to hear Sia, Lui and Oldie all but too.

I might be alone here, but I am really happy with this signing, Sezer will mature and is one of our best halves in ages.
He just needs some stability around him and he'll be fine.

Maybe. He's had stability for awhile. Same team same coaches since he got here. They definitely picked the right half out of him and austin

2 years is about right for Sezer. Especially when we don’t have another half locked in. Gives us some cover without tying a place up for 3 or 4 years.

jeez, maybe we should have kept Lachlan Lewis. Apparently he's a first grader now.
To be fair there just isn't a lot of talent around. I've seen a couple of Mounties games on tv where Tyler Cornish looked like the next big thing. People hate on Kane Elgey. They hate on Connor Watson. Cooper Cronk was a spud after half a season...
I think we kept the right half (playing on the left). And at least we actualy have Tyler Cornish, and as I've said before, we have Brad Abbey. We'll never know until we give it a go.
After all, there've been world-beaters we never had a shot at signing, like Tim Smith. Brad Firman. Fill in your own name....

I think some people are a bit mislead when they think Sezer is a better defender than Austin.
Austin made some pretty blatant bad reads early this season but as a defender overall, there is almost nothing between them.
2018 stats:
Austin 185 tackles (15.4 pg) / 27 missed tackles (2.3 pg)
Sezer 221 tackles (15.7 pg) / 37 missed tackles (2.6 pg)
Not that it matters anymore as the signing is done... But food for thought.

Some of Austins mistakes are so bad they wouldn't count as misses. If you look at other defensive stats he is a much worse defender overall and is right near the top for halves in negative stats, whereas Sezer is middle or near the bottom.
Try causes - Austin 0.9, Sezer 0.5
Line break causes - Austin 1.1, Sezer 0.2
Ineffective Tackles- Austin 1.3, Sezer 0.5
These stats match the eye test for mine.

Mistackles is a pointless stat. It provides no context.
Is a mistackle on a kick chase where the player beat the outside of the umbrella but it forces him to head back toward the sidelines where he's tackled a metre later worth the same as someone being run over close range for a try?
Not a chance.
That's one of many reasons i prefer the fox sports stats, as edwahu posted, Line break causes, ineffective tackles and try causes are the defensive stats that at least attempt to provide some context.

Anyone who can’t see how Sezer knows when to retreat in defence, when to hold the line and when to jump out ‘better’ than Blake Austin does, has probably never played League.
All halves will miss tackles and make mistakes, but some make those defensive mistakes more often or in the wrong time and places.
Remember how the left edge got defensively worse and the right edge got better when Sezer and Austin swapped sides last year. This was no coincidence.
