Aidan Sezer agrees to Canberra Raiders contract extension
Canberra Raiders halfback Aidan Sezer has agreed to terms for a two-year contract extension ahead of their crucial clash against the Wests Tigers. Meanwhile, Joe Tapine, who returns from suspension this week, says he won’t curb his aggression on field.
"It happens in the moment of a game, it is unfortunate what happened. Not much in it, but obviously it's not legal so I've got to take that and tweak it a bit," Tapine said. "But I'm not going to take any aggression away from my game or anything like that. I just need to a be bit smarter at times. Especially that time - [it] was a bit late in the half."

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
Happy with this.
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
I dont see how this can be a good idea.
There is two sides of this coin:
1. People who think Sezer IS a talented player and is not performing to the level expected of him for some reasons (he's simply not performing the basics consistently enough, irrespective of other factors) that are in his control and some reasons that may be beyond his control (Like a certain HC who has absolutely destroyed every #7 he's ever touched). And FWIW this is very much me
or
2. You ignore the player he was at the Titans for 4 years, and say the guy is simply not talented and not a FG standard half.
If you believe the first one, you can only really support this if Ricky Stuart is getting sacked, as it's clear Stuart isnt able to get anything out of the guy. And that isnt happening
If you believe the second one, then obviously you cant support this
And it's the exact same case you make for Austin, and many of the "i tried to tell you" crowd on Sezer get them that right back their way on the Austin side of the coin. Because neither of them are any good.
Either way, it seems like a bad idea. I'd cut both our halves and try something else. I really would, at best Stuart lucks into a star so good he cant even **** them up. At worst we absolutely stink and this **** idiot gets sent packing sooner.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
This is incredibly disappointing and immediately places the club in another 2 years of struggling to make the 8.
He isn't a game winner. He's not good enough to get us into the top 4 on a regular basis.
The decision to sign him is an indication that the Board are not serious about premierships.

Not many options available at the moment but as a 2nd fiddle number 6, I'd prefer Sezer over Austin.
If he's been signed as our number 1 half for 2019, we're probably ****ed.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
I have the same feelings as I did when we re-signed Josh McCrone.
Even then when some sat back and said “oh it’s on depth coin”, it would further annoy me. We shouldn’t have players like that on our roster, available to be picked in key positions. The fact is neither Sezer or McCrone are/were deserving of playing first grade for us from a certain point in time moving forward. And that’s exactly what the club has to do with players like that ...move forward without them.
This is very disappointing.

Yeah if the sophie's choice is Austin or Sezer, i'd still definitely take Sezer. But it's not. HahaGreen eyed Mick wrote: ↑June 14, 2018, 7:49 pm Not many options available at the moment but as a 2nd fiddle number 6, I'd prefer Sezer over Austin.

I agree the options available aren't great, but Pearce wasnt sniffing the market this time last year either.
I would honestly let both halves walk. I still firmly believe in both of them as talents. They've both played NRL footy at a level that not many can get to and are both relatively young. But they wont be successful at this club.

Bottom line is we need 2 halves for 2019. We've just signed one of them. Means we can look for the other one now. Reckon its time to roll the dice on a young player.

Other than Bateman there is still no re-signing ink on any senior player Raiders contract. The likes of Tedesco and Proctor said they would be with the Raiders as well, but the pen went missing. All I see so far is lots of talk and no signatures. How hard can this be?

Bitterly, bitterly disappointing. He is a fringe first grade, nothing more.
If he's been signed to continue as our number 1 half, then this club is absolutely **** and have confirmed that they simply do not care about achieving on field success in the slightest.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
So what is to stop the two current Raiders players who have 'agreed to terms' as reported in the Canberra Times - Papa and Sezer - from having a change of heart. There are no signatures tying them to the Raiders is my point. Unless the Canberra Times reports are 'fake news' then why is it so difficult to get some signatures on Raiders contracts?greeneyed wrote: ↑June 14, 2018, 9:49 pmTedesco did sign. He backflipped. Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
I know this is the thinnest of justifications, but in any team make up, a side needs at least two goal kickers who have proven ability under the pressure of NRL. By signing Sezer we have that second goal kicker. I also think Sezer has turned himself into a good defensive half.
In terms of game management he has shown very little (except for that cameo field goal). The match against the Panthers was instructive. With Austin wounded and unable to kick, he takes a run on the fourth tackle??? Why isn't he directing the forwards to bash it up the guts so he is in position to take the FG shot (I'll leave out the fact that direction of other players on the field is the job of the Captain and Marcel Marceau was practicing his impersonation of a pelican taking flight). His kicking game is inconsistent at best. How much practice kicking do they do under defensive pressure at training ? It would appear very little. It is all very well to practice kicking in the match warm up with no one running at you. But at training through the week, surely match conditions are being simulated so that it becomes second nature on the field. It appears not. The other alternative is that he is just not very good at it and no amount of training can fix it.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
TBH theres probably not much between both Williams and Sezer if your making a call on them at this point, basically the same age, similar number of games in first grade, both terribly inconsistent and drift in and out of games, the key differences are Sezers defense is a lot better so if you had better playmakers around him he could probably do a job for you, Although on the other side Sezers had more opportunities in terms of consistently being a regular NRL first choice half at 1/2 clubs where as Williams has bounced in and out of clubs /competitions so one could argue he probably hasn't had the same amount of opportunities to establish himself, Williams has less than 80 NRL games (plus 34 superleague), Where as Sezer has had 132 games in the nrl, he really should be better by now. Williams would also be considerably cheaperNorthern Raider wrote: ↑June 15, 2018, 7:15 amPersonally I’ve given up on Sam Williams becoming a regular NRL half. Personally i'd give up on pretty much all of our halves options, get rid of Williams, Sezer, Austin, Hingano(although I wouldn't mind seeing him play 5/8 first) and go all out for someone like Norman and pair him with someone with potential like, Lamb, May, O'Hagan etc
Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
Williams on the other hand has a better kicking and organising game. The big issue is his defence.

So he's hanging his hat on a 3 year run being one of the best performers in a terrible Titans team?Pigman wrote: ↑June 14, 2018, 7:18 pm I dont see how this can be a good idea.
He has actually had far more win loss success at the Raiders, funnily. To my eye he has certainly regressed majorly since joining us.

I guess you do need to re-sign him. He's a serviceable half that can defend and i don't think he's always been this dumb, so maybe the playing Hooker off the bench thing, and negotiating a contract is affecting his performance ?
I've followed the Raiders for over 25 years, so it's not hard to imagine I'm blissfully optimistic.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
I'm less angry and upset about this than I am just annoyed.
He can be good. great even. But we just don't see it enough. I know there's not a whole lot out there at the moment, but I'd prefer we took a stab at someone like Brodie Croft (off field issues aside). You just have to try and nail one of those young guys who have shown potential. Take a risk. As much as I can tolerate Austin and Sezer, i just can't see us getting anywhere with them both.
Although, in saying that, while we have RS as coach, I can't see anything happening regardless of who the halves are, so this is all the mootest of moot points IMO.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Re: Canberra Raiders re-sign Aidan Sezer for two more years
I'm a big fan of Sezer but at the same time I'm one of the first to admit that his time in Canberra hasn't panned out as well we'd hoped.
However, I really do think he is the best option we have at this stage and don't mind his re-signing for a few reasons.
1. It's not a long term deal and he's on average money.
In a market where guys like Foran, DCE, Milford and Norman are all on upwards or ball-park of $1 million a season, $500k for a guy like Sezer is not a bad deal. He's not playing like an elite half, but at the end of the day we aren't paying him like one. With the way our cap is structured, we don't have the wiggle room to go out and sign an elite half without losing a couple of our guns.
2. The market for halves is incredibly weak this season.
The best halves off contract are Brock Lamb, Ryley Jacks and Kane Elgey. Ask most Knights fans what they think of Lamb; they aren't sold. Ryley Jacks is a fringe first grader at best, playing in a great team surrounded by an elite spine. Elgey is languishing in Q-Cup behind Cartwright and Brimson, with a defensive reputation worse than Austin's and a history checkered with injuries. This season, other clubs are being forced to start guys like Nikorima, Cogger, Frawley, Hodkinson and Croker in the halves. I wouldn't take any of these guys over Sezer.
We've also been linked to guys like Normy and Adam Reynolds. Normy's off-field reputation is well publicised and he's the type of player who folds when the team is down. Reynolds has played above 20 games in a season just once since 2014. They'd both be demanding $700-800k.
3. He's great defensively.
He reads defence well and also has strong first contact. His outside men trust him and he's not afraid to put his body on the line (try saver on Hess this season).
4. I don't think he's been AS BAD as people think.
The most common criticism of Sezer is that he can't win us close games and he can't get a repeat set. In terms of repeat sets, Sezer has forced 8 drop outs from 10 starts in the halves this season (0.8 per game). In comparison with 'elite' halves, Hunt has 10 from 13 (0.76), Cronk has 10 from 14 (0.71), Thurston has 9 from 14 (0.64) and DCE has 7 from 14 (0.5).
In terms of tight matches, he just has to be more consistent. The Bulldogs and Manly games this season showed what he can do when depended on. He couldn't have played out the last five minutes of the Manly game any better, initiating the play which led to Wighton's try, getting us the repeat set and then kicking the field goal. The issue is, he doesn't do it enough. The Sharks game he was awful, the Dragons game he fell flat in the last ten. It's like for every great moment he has, there is an equally frustrating or disappointing one. I don't think it helps that the team as a whole is the dumbest in the NRL. We could've had Andrew Johns on the field for the last five minutes of that Panthers game and I still believe we would've lost.
I do agree that it's time for Austin and Sezer to be broken up, but I think Sezer is the right choice to keep moving forward. With Hodgson back, Wighton continuing to develop as a ball player and a more complete half next to him, I still believe that Sezer can be a good NRL half.
However, I really do think he is the best option we have at this stage and don't mind his re-signing for a few reasons.
