MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties post 62 in Newcastle Knights drubbing

Five tries to winger Mikaele Ravalawa has seen the table-topping Mounties post the biggest win of the 2018 Intrust Super Premiership NSW season, running out 62-0 victors over an underwhelming Newcastle Knights outfit in the sides' Round 13 clash at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

Ravalawa's five tries were those of the hosts' 13 four-pointers – the full-time margin somewhat flattering the Knights, with Mounties converting on only five occasions due to blustery conditions in Sydney's southwest.

Mounties 62 (M Ravalawa 5 B Abbey 2 J Kennedy 2 T Satini 2 S Moceidreke M Oldfield tries S Williams 3 C Garvey 2 goals) defeated Newcastle Knights 0

Interesting Garvey is a goal kicker as well. I know he has a short kicking game. As a hooker he can defend. Sticky won't play him at hooker. A spot in the halves perhaps.

I think if you look at what happened with goal kicking that match... Craig Garvey is NOT a goal kicker.

18 runs in 30mins is a huge effort though, in context Royce hunt played over 20 minutes more than Knight and made 2 less runs and no other forward in the game made more than 11

Yeah its wrong, you can see when interchanges took place on the nswrl site

Seems he had a HIA after 31 minutes and them came back on but they never started the clock again.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 15: Mounties preview

Image

In Round 15, the Mounties NSW Premiership team meets Cronulla Sharks affiliate, the Newtown Jets at Henson Park, while the Jersey Flegg side clashes with Cronulla at Shark Park.

NSW Premiership: Mounties ran in 13 unanswered tries in a 62-0 defeat of the Newcastle Knights in their last match in Round 13. Winger Mikaele Ravalawa scored five tries the rout - which could have been even nastier for the Knights had the goal kicking had been on the mark.

Apart from his five tries, Ravalawa made 221 metres with the ball in hand, four line breaks and six tackle breaks. Liam Knight (231 metres, 103 post contact metres, one line break assist, six tackle breaks, 19 tackles), Royce Hunt (218 metres, 99 post contact metres, five tackle-breaks), Jarrad Kennedy (two tries, 103 metres, one line break, four tackle breaks, 26 tackles) and Sam Williams (52 metres, four try assists, one line-break) were others to impress for Mounties. Jarrad Kennedy (26), Emre Guler (22) and Makahesi Makatoa topped the Mt Pritchard tackle count.

Mounties sit atop the competition table and come into Saturday’s clash with the fifth-placed Jets, fresh after the bye. Mounties have an 8 and 4 record so far this season, while the Jets are 7 and 5. Newtown also had a bye last week, after defeating the Canterbury Bulldogs, 20-6, in their last outing. The Jets have a DWLWW record in their past five matches; Mounties have a WLWLW form line.

Mounties have an advantage in attack, the Jets a slight advantage in defence. This season, Mt Pritchard has averaged 30 points scored per match, compared with 25 for Newtown - and conceded an average 20 points per match compared with 18 for the Jets. Mounties have a positive points differential of 118, but the Jets are no far behind on +96.

Team changes: Brad Abbey moves to five eighth for Mounties, with Sitiveni Moceidreke taking over at fullback. Michael Oldfield has been promoted to the Raiders NRL team, with Ed Murphy coming into the centres to partner Tony Satini. Emre Guler replaces Liam Knight at starting lock. Josh Saunders-Jones and Kalani Going come into the top 17 on the bench.

For the Jets, Lachlan Stein replaces Matthew Evans on the wing, with Evans taking over from Jack A Williams at five eighth. Former Mounties player, Reubenn Rennie will partner Aaron Gray, with Addison Demetriou dropping back to the bench. Blayke Brailey will start at hooker in place of Billy Magoulias, who has been named on the bench. Daniel Vasquez takes over from former Raider Jack Williams at lock. Two other former Raiders, Scott Sorensen and Anthony Moraitis will line up for the Jets.

Our tip: This will be a tough match for Mounties, with the Jets defeating Mounties 34-20 in Round 10. And this time around, Newtown will have the home ground advantage. We will go with Mounties in a close one, but don’t be surprised if there’s an “upset”.

Jersey Flegg: In Round 14, Mounties produced back to back wins, defeating the New Zealand Warriors, 32-12, at a North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. The victory sees Mounties fifth place on the ladder, with a 7 and 5 record so far this season. Their opposition this week, the Sharks, have a share of the competition lead, but are placed third on points differential. The Sharks have produced just one more win than Mounties, but have lost only once, and drawn twice. Mounties have a LLLWW form line in their past five games, while the Sharks have a WDWWL record. Cronulla lost to the Parramatta Eels, 42-6, last week.

Mounties have a slightly better record in attack (22 points scored per match on average, compared with 21 for the Sharks), but the Sharks have been clearly better in defence (conceding 18 points per match, compared with 23 for Mounties).

For Mounties, Fijian Semi Valemi replaces Komiti Tuilagi on the wing, with Tuilagi moving back to the second row and Darby Medlyn to the bench. Kyle Patterson will start at hooker, with Lachlan Cooper dropping to the bench. For the Sharks, Bronson Xerri comes in at centre for Jonaiah Lualua. Harrison Smith replaces Jayden Millard at starting hooker, with Millard named on the bench.

This will be a difficult assignment for Mounties, particularly at Shark Park. But they have got themselves back into winning form in the past two weeks, after suffering four straight losses. In addition, they did manage to upset the competition leaders, the Newcastle Knights, in Round 13 at Aubrey Keech Reserve. It’s hard to go past the Sharks in this match, but here’s hoping for another big upset.
