Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors win West Belconnen Warriors Nines

The West Belconnen Warriors' preparations for the Canberra Raiders Cup have enjoyed a perfect start on home soil. The Warriors won the inaugural West Belconnen Warriors Nines tournament, beating the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 16-10 in the final at Kippax Oval on Sunday.

West Belconnen President Steve Kirby said the tournament was a success, with next year set to be even bigger: "The tournament ran smoothly, everyone I've spoken to has really raved about it and are keen to come back next year so that's all we can ask for."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Young lose trial to Yass Magpies without key playmakers

An understrength Young went down to Canberra Raiders Cup outfit Yass in a trial on Saturday. The Cherrypickers were missing most of their back line for the clash, including halves Bobby Roberts and Jesse Corcoran for the clash in Yass.

With plenty of players missing from both teams, captain-coach James Woolford said it was hard to get a real gauge on exactly where his team is at after the 16-12 loss.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Goulburn Women prepare for heavy-hitting season

Goulburn Open Women’s Stockmen are gearing up for another red-hot crack at the Canberra Raiders Cup in the 2018 season. After losing in the grand final last year to Belconnen, Goulburn coach John Sykes said that the team will have an impressive depth of talent and will look to intimidate their opponents this year.

“We’ve got pretty good numbers. We’ve had a bit of a disjointed preparation because we‘ve got girls at the Raiders and girls at the Sharks,” Mr Sykes said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview

Image

The 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup kicks off on Thursday night at Canberra Stadium with a clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies. The match will be played prior to the Canberra Raiders match up with the Canterbury Bulldogs - which is great exposure for the local competition.

The Queanbeyan Blues took the premiership in 2017, under the leadership of former Raiders captain, Terry Campese. Campese no doubt considered retirement from the playing field, but he will be back in 2018, along with other key playmakers, Jake Wheeler and Adam Misios.

However, the Blues have lost a number of key players from last season. Forwards Aaron McInnes, Scott Rutland and Kyle O’Donnell have all retired, while dangerous backs Thomas Ruediger and Brendon Taueki won't be with the club. Terry Campese knows it will take time to rebuild the team.

"It’s going to take a few weeks to get combinations right. Our backrow is different, our edges are different and our middle is different," he said. "I’m not expecting massive things from the start but as the season builds, hopefully we can get those combinations and start showing it on the field."

The Yass Magpies were the surprise packet of the 2017 season, finishing third just two years after returning to the top grade of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

Steve and Scott Naughton orchestrated the resurgence of the club, but will take a step back in 2018 - with Jarrad Teka taking over the coaching reins. Teka is a former captain-coach of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, and transformed the Tumut Blues last season. Teka has brought lock Jacob McGrath and the Group Nine leading points scorer, hooker Jacob Toppin with him from Tumut.

On Saturday, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers take on the Woden Valley Rams at Greenway in the southern derby. The Bushies made the top four in 2017 under new coach Justin Giteau - but he faces the challenge of dealing with the turnover in his squad. Players like Brett Solomon, Jordan Hammond and Dane Ewings have retired, while strike player Quinlyn Cannon has moved back to Queensland (Northern Pride).

Meanwhile Woden Valley Rams coach Ash Barnes will be hoping to improve on his team's seventh placed finish in 2017. The Rams have lost half Jack Hickson to the Mackay Cutters - but have recruited former Canberra Raiders player, and Gungahlin Bulls player-coach, Lincoln Withers to help guide the team. It is a return to his former junior club - in what is set to be his final season.

"It's a good way to finish," Withers said. "I think this is probably my last year, that's why I was a bit keen to go back to the Rams and maybe finish off that way."

"A big point in getting me back to the Rams was that they are a young side, there are some really good kids and they wanted me to provide a bit of guidance and help the young ones come through."

At Gunghalin, the Bulls will take on the 2017 Grand Finalists, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Bulls had an injury plagued season last year, and coach David Howell has a big job ahead in turning the fortunes of the club around. The Kangaroos have lost the services of Aaron Gorrell on field - but he will carry on as coach. The Roos have also lost Jed Simbiken (Redcliffe Dolphins), Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai (West Belconnen Warriors) and Aidan Woods (Queanbeyan Blues). However, they have picked up Jeff Lima, after he retired from the Raiders at the end of 2017. The Roos will no doubt continue to be one of the powerhouses of the competition.

At O'Connor, the Belconnen United Sharks host the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a new coach, Adam Kyle, with player-coach Mick Picker leaving the club. Goulburn has also lost Tyler Cornish (Mounties). But Kyle has recruited strongly, picking up the likes of former Raider, Haydon Hodge, Nic Whatman (West Belconnen Warriors), Connor Brebner (Canberra Raiders NYC) and Fabien Paletua-Kiri (Canberra Raiders NYC). The Sharks have also been active, with their list of recruits led by Aidan Greenwood (West Belconnen Warriors) - but the 2017 wooden spooners have plenty of work ahead of them to rebuild.

The Greenhouse will be at the Blues V Magpies on Thursday night and Bushrangers V Rams on Saturday afternoon. We will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Queanbeyan Blues coach Terry Campese uses The Italian Job for Canberra Raiders Cup defence

Less than half of Terry Campese's Queanbeyan Blue premiership winning team will run out for their season opener against the Yass Magpies at Canberra Stadium on Thursday night.

"It's a lot different make-up to the side to what it was last year, but in saying that we've got some great recruits, some exciting young players and some players that were in the Raiders system last year," Campese said. "All-in-all we've still got a great team on paper, it's just about getting combinations. The more games we play together the better they'll be for the long run.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Late inclusion Mick Picker steers Tuggeranong Bushrangers to win

Mick Picker only turned up to his first Tuggeranong Bushrangers training session on Thursday night but it was enough to help his side to a 34-18 win over the Woden Valley Rams at Greenway Oval on Saturday.

"Mick Picker just turned up on Thursday to training so it was tough," coach Justin Giteau said. "I've been working on him for a few weeks, three or four weeks actually. We just got it over the line this week which was good.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Wrap

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup had an explosive opening at Canberra Stadium on Thursday night, with the clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies erupting in a wild brawl. It saw five players sent from the field, including the Blues captain coach, Terry Campese, after many punches let fly.

The all-in altercation between the teams flared after Jake Stein's high tackle on Yass prop Saipani Aiolupo in the 55th minute. Three Queanbeyan Blues players - Campese, Michael Cullen and Jake Wheeler - and two players from the Yass Magpies - Mitch Edwards and Benny Warner - were ordered from the field.

The Blues had dominated the match up to that point. Tries to Jake Wheeler and Terry Campese saw the Queanbeyan outfit shoot out to a 10-0 lead after around 20 minutes. The Magpies hit back in the 32nd minute, when new Yass hooker and co-captain, Jacob Toppin chased down a grubber for a four pointer. But the Blues had the last word in the first half, with Terry Campese taking a field goal as the siren sounded, for a 11-4 lead at the break.

A try to Queanbeyan winger, Larry Manu in the 49th minute saw the Blues extend their lead by a further six points. The altercation between the teams soon followed - giving the Magpies a one man advantage. That didn't matter to Blues fullback Adam Misios, his try producing a 23-4 advantage at the 65th minute.

But eventually, the fatigue set in for the Blues. The Magpies scored three tries in the final six minutes, through Shaun Davis, Tom Warner and Jesse Collins. Yass declined the conversion attempt after the Collins try, in a desperate effort to secure a match winner with just 30 seconds left. But they could not do it, and the Blues held on for a 23-18 victory.

On Saturday, former Raiders Mick Picker and Lincoln Withers faced off at Greenway in the southern derby. Withers made a return to his junior club, the Woden Valley Rams, in the match - the start of one final hurrah for the veteran. Former Goulburn captain-coach, Picker made a last minute decision to join the Tuggeranong Bushrangers - and played a significant role in the Bushies' 34-18 win. Picker had taken part in just one training session with Tuggeranong prior to the game.

The Bushrangers went out to an early 6-0, with five eighth Blake Murray scoring in remarkable circumstances - following a charged down kick, a regathered grubber and some miracle passing. And a brace of tries to the Bushrangers' wingers Jayden Pollard and Livinai Tuicaku in the final six minutes of the first half, saw the home team go to the break with a 16-6 lead.

Tuggeranong hooker Josh Mitchell scored just two minutes into the second half, putting the Bushrangers firmly in control of the match. But the Rams staged a mini-comeback, with tries to Kostaninos Posantzis and Sean Maloney, reducing their deficit to just four points. But that was as close as Woden would get - as the Bushrangers closed out the game with two tries to another former Raider, fullback Michael Brophy.

In other matches, the Belconnen United Sharks and Gungahlin Bulls - teams that were cellar dwellers in 2017 - showed they will be much more competitive in 2018. But in the end, the Goulburn Bulldogs and Queanbeyan Kangaroos proved to be too strong. The Bulldogs ran out 30-24 victors over the Sharks at O'Connor, while the Roos were narrow 34-30 winners over the Bulls at Gungahlin.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Thirteen unlucky for some as cost of all-in brawl grows

Thirteen games and growing. That's the fallout from the all-in brawl that marred the Canberra Raiders Cup season opener between reigning premiers Queanbeyan Blues and the Yass Magpies.

Magpies' Benny Warner was the hardest hit, with a recent poor record increasing his punishment to five matches, while Blues lock Aisea Taholo will miss three games and teammate Michael Cullen is out for two.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Judiciary statement

The penalties from last Thursday’s match between the Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies have been handed out after the judiciary met on Wednesday night.

CRRL General Manager Mark Vergano said that he agreed with the referee’s decision to send players from the field and supported the judiciary’s final decision.

“The actions displayed last Thursday night were unacceptable,” Vergano said. “We fully support the referee’s decision and will ensure this kind of behaviour is stamped out of our game.”

Taking into consideration discounts for good behaviour over the last two seasons and players taking the early plea, Mitchell Edwards, Terry Campese and Jake Wheeler will all miss one match. Similarly, Michael Cullen will miss two matches.

Benny Warner will miss five matches after his suspension was increased due to other offences in the last two seasons. Warner also received a discount for taking the early plea.

Aisea Taholo was sent directly to the judiciary and will miss three matches.

Willie Peace is set to front the judiciary next week where his suspension will be determined.

John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview

Image

The 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup will again be showcased at Canberra Stadium this Saturday night, with the clash between the Goulburn Bulldogs and Gungahlin Bulls to precede the Raiders' match against the Eels.

Nic Mead of the Gungahlin Bulls says the prospect of running out on Canberra Stadium is being eagerly anticipated by the players.

"It's pretty exciting, I know all the boys are pumped. It's great that the Canberra rugby league are doing that,it's exciting" Nic Mead of the Gungahlin Bulls said.

The young Bulls had an injury plagued, season from hell in 2017 - but they showed much more promise in their first match of 2018. They were beaten by just four points by last year's grand finalists, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, at Gunghalin Enclosed in Round 1.

Mead believes that the Bulls now have a better blend of youth and experience.

"This year we've got a good balance of young blokes coming through and then some older heads, like Esi [Tonga], Drury Low, blokes like that who can really close out games for us this year."

The Goulburn Bulldogs had a first up win, 30-24, against the Belconnen United Sharks last week. But they were challenged all the way by the 2017 wooden spooners.

It is a new look Bulldogs team, with new coach Adam Kyle, recruiting strongly in the forwards. Nic Whatman has switched to Goulburn from West Belconnen, while the Bulldogs have also signed young forwards Connor Brebner and Fabien Paletua Kiri from the Raiders' juniors system.

"There's been a lot of talk about their forward pack, so obviously our first job is slowing them down," Nic Mead said. "If we get our defence right, then we know our attack can come from that."

Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle was happy with his team's first up win.

"Obviously pre-seasons are long and everyone's a bit nervous to start that first game. I think to get a win first up, the boys took a lot of confidence from that," Kyle said.

But the Goulburn mentor is wary of this week's opposition.

"They're a young side and they're very well coached," Kyle said.

"From having a look at their performance on the weekend, it was fantastic to see after a tough season for them last year. We're expecting the same from them, to come out really tough. They've got a few ex-NRL players in there as well, so it will be a tough competition."

In other matches on Saturday, the Woden Valley Rams take on the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Phillip. The Rams suffered a 34-18 loss at the hands of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last week, but were well in the match at the 60 minute mark. They will challenge the Kangaroos, who just overcame the Bulls in Round 1 - but the Queanbeyan outfit is likely to be too strong.

At Seiffert Oval, the Queanbeyan Blues take on the West Belconnen Warriors. It is the first match of the season for the Warriors - and they will face a Blues team that will be without chief playmaker Terry Campese, centre Jake Wheeler, second rower Michael Cullen and Aisea Taholo. All have been suspended after the Round 1 brawl in the Blues' victory over the Yass Magpies. The Warriors could get the Blues in this one, given the absence of those three key players.

The Yass Magpies meet the Belconnen United Sharks at Walker Park. The Magpies will be missing prop Benny Warner, bench player Mitch Edwards and Willie Peace suspended for their part in the Canberra Stadium brawl. The Sharks showed in Round 1 that they will be a more competitive outfit in 2018, but the Magpies might still be too strong at home.

The Greenhouse will be at the Bulldogs V Bulls on Saturday night. We will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at the game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.
