Commonwealth Games 2018

Post by greeneyed »

Was it too much to hope that the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony would be completely tasteful... and not descend into kitsch?

It wouldn't be the Gold Coast otherwise
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

It was always going to be very basic. I hope to see Vanessa Amarosi and Nikki Webster rocking their wares by full time of the ceremony.

Surely there is room for them?

I wasn't watching. Obviously. Don't need to when I can get updates from here. :)

I got to watch some of it on Sat night for the dress rehearsal. It's all pretty standard 'australiana" crap. A friend who is a volunteer for the games live streamed it.

I've never been so embarrassed by a rendition of the national anthem.

In general? Or the presence of Prince Big Ears wasn't enough to inspire a good performance?

Couldn't they find Julie Anthony and Human Nature? Now that was a rendition of the national anthem!

Not yet. Now they're showing a beach party on sand.

They've dug up Ricki Lee! There is also pretend water and waves on the shore in the form of lighting effects. That's not a bad effect really.

Now they're bringing out the teams. Every team has their county name on... a surf board! Carried by a nipper! There's some innovation!

Was there any Gold Coast police doing shady drug deals? Either as part of the ceremony, or for real? The ceremony would be great cover

The most iconic part has been Christine Anu's fake boobs nearly popping out of her shirt. Very GC.
