Board updates

Post by greeneyed »

Hi all, we are going to update our board software shortly, and there will be some changes to the appearance of the forum... but hopefully they won't be too radical for you! No one likes changes! But we have not updated the board software for some time, and it is now well out of date.

It’s not final, but here’s a preview:

Image

We have also decided to move to a single URL: thegh.com.au

Our original URL, thegreenhouseact.com.au has been maintained since the forum started, but for a long time, we have promoted the site using thegh.com.au... and we think the time has come to switch over completely, and have a more secure URL. So if you're used to using thegreenhouse.com.au, you'll need to update your bookmarks.

This change will start to be promulgated tomorrow. So please be aware, there may be some site disruptions.

Is that the first use of the word 'promulgated' on this site?

EDIT: Nope, its the 3rd. Once was by me, back in 2013 :D

Carry on.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

The mobile app is used well less than the regular site. I suspect this is because a lot of site traffic is referred from Facebook... and to a lesser extent, Twitter.

I suspect its because a lot of people are like me... and have it open at work most if not all day... beats working... well mostly... the politics thread can be a bit trying at times..

The site will be down tomorrow morning for some time so as to transition to the new board software. Hopefully it won’t be too long.

After that we will transition to the single URL for the site.

Yes. There may well be some extended disruption to the App when we change the URL.

Nice, thanks for the update.
I'd suggest a small change to the new post icons in the topic list. It's hard to see what's new vs old with that text change. Should be a colour change as well.

Thanks zim. Happy to take all suggestions, but any further changes would be a separate exercise, which might take a while.

Ew don’t like the new mobile page (never like mobile pages) much prefer using the desktop page on my phone, is there an option to choose to go to desktop view as many sites have.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Will get used to it, but is there a way you can shrink the view, like zoom out? The listing of threads appears too big

Most browsers allow you to display at 100 per cent or variations on that. I used to display the forum at 125 per cent, but this version looks best at 100 per cent.

Unfortunately the software was becoming so far out of date it was risking the stability and future convertibility of the site.
