12 to go first period TRY SEA EAGLES It is off the back of a very tough call against Canberra... dropped bomb that went backwards, but called a knock on. Lots of penalties and dropped ball so far.

21 to go third period Great effort from the Raiders No.11. Pulled off a great tackle, then next tackle, he charged down a kick from the Sea Eagles on the last and regathered. Sea Eagles player then binned for lying of top of him in the ruck. Refused to go for an age.

16 to go third period TRY SEA EAGLES Terrible defence on the Manly hooker. Heat really taking effect now. Manly still with 12 players.

7 to go third period TRY SEA EAGLES Canberra just not stopping the offloads, and the Sea Eagles score in the corner. This is ending up as a bit of a rout.

3 to go third period TRY RAIDERS A consolation effort.

Sea Eagles 28-12

FULL TIME

Understand the best Raiders team was only together for the first period, plus a handful of players were out.

There are some very good outside backs in the Matts team. Also I have to say the Sea Eagles team was putting in shoulder charges, head grapples and lots of wrestling and niggle. Hopefully it gets penalised heavily once the season starts.

Cootamundra's Joe Ward excited to make Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews team

Joe Ward might only be starting year 10 this year, but he’s got his sights set firmly on making it to the Canberra Raiders’ NRL side. Ward has been selected in the Raiders’ under 16s Harold Mathews Cup team. He was selected after trialling for the Riverina Academy and was spotted by talent scouts from the Raiders.

“I didn’t know they were there, a couple of weeks later I was at work and dad came in and told me my name was in the Harold Matthews side,” Ward said. “I was over the moon, you couldn’t get the smile off my face.”

Fourteen Group Nine players make it through to Canberra Raiders junior representatives squads

Nine of the 2018 Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews squad are from Group Nine: Brothers juniors Wilson Hamblin, Bryce Magnone and Liam Fitzsimmons have been selected alongside Tumut pair Paul Grove and Drew Beavan plus Aiden Connell (Albury), Clay Webb (Gundagai) and Harry Fitzpatrick (Young).

There are also five players in the SG Ball team (under 18s). Three are from Southcity, Jordan Little, Maleke Morris and Brodie Tracey, plus Tumut’s Jacob Sturt and Kangaroos’ Matt Fellows.

“I think it is a credit to the academy systems in place now,” Peter Mulholland said.

One of Mackay's best young footballers heads south

The Canberra Raiders NRL club has signed one of Mackay's most promising young footballers, Caleb Sinn, to play in the SG Ball competition. He went to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last week to take part in a five-day training camp and impressed in a hit out against the Newcastle Knights' under 18 squad.

"It was intense training and pretty hard (at the camp),” he said. "There is a pathway with the Cutters (to elite sport), but I find it a bit better down there.”
