I agree. Television has overtaken Movies when it comes to which is the best mediumgreeneyed wrote:Sorry Bonehead, I know it is sacrilege to most people... but they’ve become comic book films in my view. I’ll probably watch this one when it comes free on Foxtel, but it’s got to be something out of the box, like Deadpool, before I watch comic book movies. Hollywood is pumping out the same film, with bigger and better special effects and CGI, but they’re all the same film. Nothing original and I’m personally finding them really boring. I watch a lot of movies out a sense of duty... Star Wars movies have fallen into that category for a while.
But I do understand why a lot of people would disagree, and I can see the nostalgic appeal of new episodes of films loved in youth.

I start going to the movies around the time of award season. The best films are all held back to this period of the year. There are some very good films, I saw one today. But I agree, I see many better things on pay and streaming services during the year.Fuifui Bradbrad wrote:I agree. Mudbound... I’m pretty sure that didn’t get a theatrical release, not in Australia at least. Could be wrong, but I first saw that on Netflix and is an amazing film.
I want to see “Lady Bird”... saw the trailer today and it looks like some exciting film making.
By the way... it’s interesting to see The Greatest Showman is getting a 95 per cent approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 per cent with critics. I tried to like it, but I’m with the critics.

100%. Just look at shows like Stranger Things. Perfect story telling. If that show was a movie it’d be something awful.Fuifui Bradbrad wrote:I agree. Maybe it’s the comic book nerd in me but I don’t find comic book movies the same film, past few marvel ones I’ve found all different with different feels to them, Antman, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Homecoming, Dr Strange, Ragnorok, Black Panther and Infinity war look to be different again.
As for the tv medium like movies there are good and bad, the saturation of reality tv shows brings the medium down heavily (now they are boring and unoriginal) but things like American Gods, Preacher etc shows the strength of it.

Network FTA has basically given up on drama and comedy series. It’s mostly sport and reality. It is why I found something like The Good Doctor refreshing. A network TV show that dares to be different. (Though my critic brownie points have taken a dive with TR on this one!)

Zendaya and Zac Efron sing one of the best songs from The Greatest Showman, I will give them that.
Wouldn’t be surprised if “This is me” from the film wins Best Song this year. It is the anthem for human diversity in the film... even though it is all completely revisionist. But at face value it is a good message.

Yep have to agree, I’ve all but given up with FTA. Will be interesting to see what new additions will come when Disney starts their streaming service, I’m guessing more comic and Star Wars tv showsgreeneyed wrote:Network FTA has basically given up on drama and comedy series. Yeah, this I agree with... I think. I feel like Comic Movies are almost a different genre. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but I couldn’t tell you what’s out at the Cinemas this weekend, or say that I’ve heard of any of the Oscar Award nominees.Manbush wrote:Maybe it’s the comic book nerd in me but I don’t find comic book movies the same film, past few marvel ones I’ve found all different with different feels to them, Antman, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Homecoming, Dr Strange, Ragnorok, Black Panther and Infinity war look to be different again.

There are genres within the comic book genre though, New Mutants next will be taking the horror route.
Loved Ragnorok but felt went a bit heavy on the comedy, my least favorite part was Korg, felt they went for cheap laughs with him when going from the source material he was a hard ass and very serious character after having to kill his brothers, remove his comedy element and would’ve been better.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

+1 for Titan XC
I went for the first time for Star Wars. I couldn't get over the electric recliners. Only $15 tickets too. Will only do movies there from now on whenever possible.

I enjoyed it, probably more than TLJ, popcorn movie but fun
Re: The Film Thread
I saw Darkest Hour and The Shape of Water today.
Darkest Hour was outstanding in almost every way, the acting outstanding and Oldman in particular. We know it wasn’t entirely historically accurate... for example when Churchill jumped on the underground... but you’ve got to give a bit of dramatic license. Top of the line film.
The Shape of Water... unusual, daring, the cinematography and design of sets etc outstanding. I can see the art of the film making. I always like an homage to film and television history and it has heaps of that. But did I care about the characters? Did it move me in the way I think the film maker intended? Not really. Because The Creature from the Black Lagoon style monster just had me thinking... it’s just all too unreal. The characters really do seem like they’re from a 50s sci fi movie, and they are just too much like a comic book. Octavia Spencer was, as always, terrific, and she’s the best thing about the movie.

Re: The Film Thread
I saw The Post and Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri today.
The Post is Speilberg and Streep at their consummate best, Tom Hanks wasn't bad either. It is a great film, engrossing, fast paced and the sort of film that you don't notice running two hours. Professional film making in every way. Glorifies the "free press" of course... which is good where it has standards, as in this case. Much of the free press doesn't operate in that fashion, however.
Three Billboards... "dark comedy" shouldn't excuse some of the ridiculous holes in the storyline. How some of the characters did not get arrested at some stages... well it was outrageously silly... and that really wasn't the tone. Very good performances in the three main roles... they may well win some Oscars... But definitely should not win a best film award.
Also saw Dunkirk recently. Very professional film as well... deserves heaps of praise for the film technicians, cinematography and effects. Obviously made heaps of cash as well. But didn't really enjoy it. Somehow did not feel engaged with many of the characters (perhaps because they didn't say much and were secondary to the look and feel and action).
Darkest Hour and The Post were my favourites of the past five films I've seen.

I haven't seen The Post yet, but of the other three films you mentioned, in order of preference I'd go:
1. Three billboards
2. Darkest hour
3. Dunkirk
All three movies were good, but a few comments on each:
Three billboards - I loved the characters and the redemption storyline of one of the mains. That scene in the hospital with the orange juice was touching. The only thing that felt out of place to me was Woody Harrelson's wife... her accent was all over the place.
The Darkest Hour plot line wasn't as engrossing as I'd hoped. And I preferred John Lithgow's portrayal of Churchill in The Crown.
Dunkirk was a cool story, but a lot of action which I'm not into.

Re: The Film Thread
I just found it ridiculous that a cop smashes down the glass front door of a building, assaults someone, smashes a window and throws him out of a first floor window, and then kicks him in the street, in front of a brand new police chief... and all that happens to him is he gets fired!? No arrest? How he was still on the streets for the rest of the film is beyond me.the bone wrote:I haven't seen The Post yet, but of the other three films you mentioned, in order of preference I'd go:

And that wasn't the only silly thing about the plot. I get that ridiculous things happen in comedies... and this is a black comedy... but the tone is tragic, and the plot holes just don't gel with that, for me, anyway.

Just watched "Get out". Entertaining... and it is no doubt film craftsmanship... but really not much originality. It is not far from a standard horror film. No way it should be a best picture nomination.

*** Get Out Spoiler ***
I loved Get Out. You could tell it was a horror directed by a comedic writer. It is very clever with its subtle hints on how race is treated in the US. Things like the him picking the cotton out of the chair, and the daughter not mixing the milk with her fruit loops.
I loved that his friend the security guard is meant to represent and reflect what the typical audience member would shout while watching a horror.
Fun Fact: It was originally going to end with the lead character getting framed and arrested. But after the Black Lives Matter protests, the director felt it a happy ending was deserved
