Canberra Raiders Cup Week 2 Finals Preview

The Queanbeyan Blues will be out to make amends for their defeat last week and keep their dominant season alive when they come up against the Yass Magpies on Sunday. Blues assistant coach Adam Monahan is well aware of how dangerous Yass can be.

“They’ve got good middle boys, good props and their centres are probably two of the best centres in the competition,’’ said Monahan. “We have to match them in the middle and hopefully we can get them in the backs.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan's Terry Campese looks to avoid the Blues against Yass Magpies

He's hinted a World Cup farewell at Canberra Stadium with Italy could be the perfect swan-song to his career, but if the Queanbeyan Blues want to lure Terry Campese back next season then avoid Monday morning.

"[Playing on is] something I'll have to evaluate at the end of the World Cup campaign and see how the body is. I've been playing a number of years now and I want to go out on the right note so we'll have to wait and see how things pan out.

Sunday: Queanbeyan Blues v Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval, 3.30pm.

Terry Campese leads Queanbeyan Blues to Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final in first year as coach

Queanbeyan Blues skipper Terry Campese is ready to end a personal 15-year premiership drought at the club that kick-started his career after clinching a Canberra Raiders Cup grand final berth on Sunday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 2 Wrap

Image

The 2017 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final will be an all Queanbeyan affair, after the Queanbeyan Blues defeated the Yass Magpies, 30-0, this afternoon at Seiffert Oval in the Preliminary Final.

The minor premiers will meet the Queanbeyan Kangaroos next Sunday at Seiffert Oval - just two weeks after the Kangaroos blitzed them in the major semi final.

Sadly for the plucky Magpies, they were never in the contest. They trailed 20-0 at half time, and while they showed more promise in the first 20 minutes of the second half, they could not penetrate the Blues' defensive line.

The conditions were icy, with a mix of rain and sleet falling throughout the first half of the reserve grade match. By the time the first grade teams hit the park for their warm up, the sun was shining again... but biting winds swept the ground for most of the afternoon.

The Blues struck early in the match, running on the last tackle in the third minute. Forward Michael Cullen stood in the tackle, and somehow bumped away from four Magpies defenders and crashed over the white stripe.

Cullen followed up for a double in the 9th minute, with hooker James Ulrick sending the second rower running wide. Cullen simply reached out and slammed the ball over the line for a try. It gave the Blues a 12-0 advantage by just the 10 minute mark.

The Blues extended their lead through a Terry Campese penalty goal, after a high tackle on fullback Jake Wheeler. And in the 33rd minute, Campese set up a try to bench forward Aaron McInnes, a nice short ball putting the scorer into a gap.

Queanbeyan Blues V Yass Magpies highlights

Both teams played adventurous football after the break, but they also produced multiple errors. It took until the 59th minute before the Blues could score again. A perfect kick from Terry Campese to the try line was gathered by centre Thomas Reudiger for a four pointer.

And then just five minutes later, Campese was setting up points again. A long looping pass to Brendon Taueki, saw the wing man cross in the corner. It gave the Blues a 30-0 lead and the match was wrapped up.

There was some spite in the final stages, with a melee breaking out in the 73rd minute. Blues prop Kyle O'Donnell was sent to the sin bin for throwing a punch; the Magpies ended the match with 12 men as well, when Ben Warner was binned for dissent.

Blues captain/coach Terry Campese has guided his team to a Grand Final in his first year as coach - at his junior club.

"As soon as I signed with the Blues this season, my goal straight away was to come back and win a premiership. Now we're in the big one and hopefully that can come true," he told The Canberra Times.

He has his opportunity this Sunday - in a Grand Final clash that has seemed destined for most of the season. Team 1 versus Team 2. It should be an outstanding contest.

CRRL Finals Week 2 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Blues have ensured the grand final will be an all Queanbeyan affair after they beat the Yass Magpies 30-0 at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues raced to a 12-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes when Michael Cullen latched onto good passes from Terry Campese to cross the try line twice.

Terry Campese hopes 1987 heroes inspire Queanbeyan Blues' Canberra Raiders Cup charge

Motivation for a grand final against your biggest rivals isn't hard to come by, but the Queanbeyan Blues are calling on the "tough bastards" of yesteryear for extra inspiration.

The Blues are holding a 30-year reunion for the 1987 first grade and reserve grade premiership-winning teams at the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final Preview

Image

The 2017 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final is the blockbuster most have predicted all season. It is an all Queanbeyan affair - a match up between the powerhouses of this year's competition, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Queanbeyan Blues.

The Blues finished as minor premiers and won 14 matches straight to start the season. They then dropped the final two games of the regular season - and were blitzed by the second placed Kangaroos, 48-24, in the major semi final.

2017 Major semi final Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos finished second - with their only two defeats to the Blues, until the final two rounds.

Both teams were a step above the rest of the competition. The Blues lost just three matches, the Kangaroos just four. The Kangaroos ended with the best attack in the league; the Blues ranked second. The Blues ended with the best defence; the Kangaroos ranked second.

The Blues won the first contest between the two teams this year, 36-26, in Round 2 at Seiffert. The Queanbeyan Blues took control in the first half - and never let go, despite a comeback from the Kangaroos. By the half time break, the Blues had already secured a 26 point lead.

2017 Round 2 Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Then in Round 11 at Freebody, the Kangaroos led 20-10 at half time - but the Blues came from behind to steal the win, 24-20.

2017 Round 11 Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues

There are some big personalities who will feature in the match.

Former Canberra Raiders captain, Terry Campese, is in his first year as captain/coach of the Queanbeyan Blues. He controls the pace of the game expertly - much like Jason Smith did in his years with the Raiders.

Image

And he is involved in almost everything the Blues do - with his expert kicking and passing setting up try after try this season. It was no different in the 30-0 Preliminary Final defeat of the Yass Magpies last Sunday. He personally finished the season as the leading goal kicker in the competition (72 goals) and the second highest point scorer (152 points).

Leading the Blues to the minor premiership in his first year as a coach has been a remarkable achievement. His goals don't stop there.

"As soon as I signed with the Blues this season, my goal straight away was to come back and win a premiership," he told The Canberra Times.

"Now we're in the big one and hopefully that can come true. As a coach you just want to get the best out of your players. It's been a big learning experience for myself doing this job ... it's been enjoyable and now it just comes down to one game. It's going to be a cracking day."

His plan of recruiting from rugby union players, like Brendon Taueki, Francis Fainifo, Brendon Spears and George Stewart, has proved to be a very rewarding one. The Canberra Raiders Cup doesn't have a salary cap, it has a points based cap, and rugby union converts count for zero points. Taueki has ended the season with 15 tries, second in the league.

He's also aimed to re-build club culture, celebrating both the past and the future. For home games this year, Blues junior players have accompanied the senior team onto the field. This weekend, there will be a 30 year reunion of the Queanbeyan Blues premiership team of 1987. Guess who they defeated that year? The Kangaroos, 6-4.

In the maroon corner, we have the Kangaroos captain/coach, Aaron Gorrell. The former Dragons and Broncos hooker played his 100th match for the Roos in this year's major semi final, scoring a try in the process. He will hang up the boots after this match. Since taking the helm at the Roos in 2012, the club has been a regular premiership contender. He led them to a 21-20 Grand Final win over the Blues in 2013 - and took them to the 2016 decider.

Then there is Roos' play maker and former Raiders' junior, Brent Crisp - named the 2017 McIntyre Medal winner, despite playing just 10 of the 16 possible matches due to work commitments in Darwin. He was also the competition's top try scorer (16) and points scorer (186). He returned for the major semi final and tore the Blues apart. He scored three tries himself, and 20 of the Roos' 48 points.

Image

After that match, he was not prepared to say that he'd be available for the Grand Final. Aaron Gorrell has said he'll drive to Darwin himself to collect him if need be. That's how important Crisp is to the Kangaroos' premiership hopes. But he has been named.

It should be a great contest. These are two quality teams. If you've not been to a Canberra Raiders Cup game this season, don't miss this one.

The Greenhouse will be at Seiffert, and will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at the game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

And don't forget, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of all the Grand Finals if you cannot get to the ground:

Imagine if Campo's body had held up to the rigours of the NRL?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final Preview

Having had their premiership dreams crushed by the West Belconnen Warriors last year, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be looking to make amends with a grand final win against the Queanbeyan Blues.

Helping the Roos’ cause will be the likely return of Les McIntyre Medalist, Brent Crisp after the playmaker had been away in Darwin for work.

“His flight is booked,” Roos coach Aaron Gorrell said. “I’m confident he’ll be there but I’m confident that if he’s not, we have 17 blokes that’ll come up with the goods.”

Queanbeyan Blues prop Jake Stein swaps yellow cards for Canberra Raiders Cup glory

Queanbeyan Blues prop Jake Stein was "getting yellow cards left, right and centre" before he decided soccer wasn't for him. Fast forward four years and he's lacing up the boots in the front row for a Canberra Raiders Cup grand final against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

"I was going to miss the whole season this season but I then saw the highlights of them playing their first game and I was like 'nah, I'm not missing this season'," Stein said.

He's been talked out of retirement a couple of times, but Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell is so adamant this will be his last game he's throwing his boots in the bin.

"I'm done, 100 per cent. The boots will be in the bin, never to get another pair," Gorrell said. "Other times have more or less been after another knee or something like that. This time it's all me."

MATCH REPORT: Blues claim 2017 Canberra Raiders Cup premiership

A late try to Queanbeyan Blues prop Kyle O’Donnell has seen his side claim the Austbrokers Canberra CRC First Grade Grand Final 13-6 over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues led 7-6 after captain-coach Terry Campese kicked a 55th-minute field goal before O’Donnell crashed over from close range as the Blues assumed one hand on the Cup.

Campese was awarded man-of-the-match after a performance in which he was involved in everything, playing a hand in a number of tries, blasting a 40/20 and proving a deadeye from the tee.
